Julian Stuer Leads the Final 57 After Day 1 of the EPT Barcelona Super High Roller

Niveau 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Julian Stuer
Julian Stuer

The PokerStars.es EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller got under way today, attracting a field of 89 players (73 unique players and 16 re-entries), with many notables among the entrants who played eight 60-minute levels on Day 1. Last year 99 entries were made into the event, but registration remains open till start of play on Day 2, so that record might still get broken.

Before the day’s play got underway, it was announced that the proposed payout changes, from 15 percent to 20 percent, were to be reversed for this tournament, as well as the upcoming €25,000 Single-Day High Roller. This was due to feedback from players, and as an additional step, players were asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding payout structures as they took their seats in the Super High Roller.

There was no slow start to this tournament, with upwards of 20 players taking their seats for the first hand of the day. The field was packed full of some of the world’s best High Roller players, including two-time €50,000 High Roller Champion Steve O’Dwyer, Mike McDonald, Rainer Kempe, Fedor Holz, and Anthony Zinno.

As the day went on, they were joined by other notables, including defending champion Sylvain Loosli, 2016 November Niner Vojtech Ruzicka, and PokerStars Team Pro and 2016 WSOP Player of the Year Jason Mercier. All of them got a crisp 250,000 starting stack to work with.

Leading the way at the end of today’s play is Julian Stuer with 1,350,000. The German worked his way steadily up the chip counts before winning a huge pot against Bryn Kenney. After Stuer opened, Kenney three-bet to 38,000 and Stuer four-bet enough to put Kenney all in. The American called for his tournament life, but was ahead holding {a-Hearts}{k-Spades} against Stuer’s {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}. However, the board ran out {5-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, and Kenney was eliminated, sending his chips across to the grateful German.

Also among the chip leaders is Fedor Holz (1,150,000). After busting on his first bullet, he bought back in and grinded through the day, only to scoop a huge pot against EPT Malta winner Niall Farrell in one of the last hands of the day. After check-calling a bet from his opponent on {j-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, Holz check-raised the turn of the {10-Diamonds}, and Farrell called. With the pot already up to almost 400,000, the {7-Spades} came on the river. Holz checked and Farrell thought before moving all in, covering Holz. He sighed and sank back in his chair before eventually calling.

"Good hand," nodded Farrell, who showed {k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for king high. Holz showed {j-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for two pair, scooping the monstrous pot in the final minutes of the day.

Timothy Adams is also among the leaders and has been up among the top three chip counts for most of the day. He eliminated Akin Tuna, Vojtech Ruzicka and Jannis Brauer on his way to bagging up 877,000. Jean-Noel Thorel (1,075,000) is also among the big stacks.

Other names remaining in the field include Erik Seidel (552,000), Nick Petrangelo (496,000), who already won the €10,000 opening event here in Barcelona, Sylvain Loosli (460,000), Rainer Kempe (429,000), Anthony Zinno (325,000), Mustapha Kanit (250,000), Max Silver (226,000), and Mike McDonald (195,000).

Play resumes tomorrow at 12.30pm local time, and PokerNews live updates will be there to capture all the key action as it happens. Players are able to sign up right till start of play on Day 2, so a seat draw and prize pool information will be released as soon as play is back underway. A full list of chip counts can be found in the live reporting section. Daniel Negreanu might well be one of the players entering before Day 2 starts, as he wasn't feeling too good on Day 1 and decided not to play. He tweeted he intends on entering tomorrow morning.

Farrell Runs Huge Bluff Versus Holz

Niveau 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

EPT Malta winner Niall Farrell opened to 12,000 from middle position and Fedor Holz defended his big blind. The flop came {J-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Holz check-called a 15,000 bet from Farrell.

Holz checked the {10-Diamonds} turn to Farrell, who fired a second barrel of 45,000. Holz thought for two minutes, then announced a check-raise to 158,500. The Scotsman took a while before coming along with the call.

With the pot already up to almost 400,000, the dealer fanned out the {7-Spades} on the river. Again, Holz took a while before coming to a decision, this time electing to check. Farrell took his time as well, and finally shoved all in, which was for Holz' remaining stack.

Holz, who nearly had 380,000 behind, sighed and sank back in his chair to come to a decision. He took around a minute before sliding in two blue 5,000 chips, indicating a call.

"Good hand," nodded Farrell, who showed {K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} for king high. Holz showed {J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} for two pair, scooping the monstrous pot in the final minutes of the day.

Thorel Busts Mercier

Niveau 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

On a flop of {6-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} Jason Mercier check-raised Jean-Noel Thorel's 20,000 continuation bet to 77,000. Thorel called, and called Mercier's 100,000 shove on the {Q-Clubs} turn as well.

Mercier turned over {J-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for a flopped two pair from the big blind, but he needed to improve as Thorel tabled {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds} for the nuts with a redraw.

The river {8-Hearts} was a blank and Mercier, the sole PokerStars Team Pro playing today, made his exit with under half an hour of play left for the day. Thorel meanwhile, is the owner of one of the biggest stacks in the room.

John Juanda And Bryn Kenney Eliminated

Niveau 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
John Juanda
John Juanda

In two hands, both John Juanda and Bryn Kenney have been eliminated from the same table.

Hand 1

Holding {A-}{Q-}, Christoph Vogelsang raised under the gun. Action folded around to John Juanda in the big blind, who shoved 65,000 all in with {7-}{7-}. Vogelsang called and improved his hand to send Juanda to the rail.

Juanda won the EPT Main Event in Barcelona last year, banking a whopping €1,022,593, and will no doubt be back in the Main Event later this week to defend his title.

Hand 2
Julian Stuer raised to 12,000 from late position. Bryn Kenney responded with a three-bet to 38,000 from the big blind. Stuer then took his towering stack of green 25,000 chips and slid them forward, putting Kenney at risk. The American wasted no time in calling off the remainder of his 280,000 stack.

Julian Stuer: {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Bryn Kenney: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Stuer paired his kicker when the board ran out {5-Spades}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, eliminating Kenney from the tournament.

Drinan Doubles Through O'Dwyer

Niveau 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

Connor Drinan (early position) and Steve O'Dwyer (big blind) got their chips in the middle before the flop. O'Dwyer's {J-Hearts}{J-Spades} was trailing the {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} of Connor Drinan and was drawing dead by the time the turn was out: {K-Clubs}{2-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. Despite rivering a full house himself, O'Dwyer had to part ways with 208,000 in chips.

No Medals for Silver

Niveau 5 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Max Silver
Max Silver

We arrived on the river but one of our colleagues from the PokerStars Blog filled us in on the details after the hand was done.

From first position, Moritz Dietrich raised to 7,000 and his neighbor John Juanda called. Max Silver called on the button before Julian Stuer squeezed from the big blind to 56,000. Both Dietrich and Juanda folded, Silver made the call.

Stuer and Silver checked the {Q-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop and {2-Diamonds} turn, before Stuer open shoved the {6-Clubs} river for 288,000. Silver had just a little less than that behind, and tanked for some time before eventually tossing in a single chip to indicate the call.

Stuer showed {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} for top set and Silver open mucked his {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} before leaving the table with hanging shoulders.

Tuna Busts to Segebrecht

Niveau 5 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Akin Tuna
Akin Tuna

As we arrived, Claas Segebrecht was already stacking chips and Akin Tuna helped move over his last chips. Dominik Nitsche filled us in what had just happened.

Tuna had opened from the button and Segebrecht had three-bet from the big blind. Tuna then four-bet and was committed to call the five-bet shove that followed.

Tuna was in bad shape with {K-}{Q-} off as Segebrecht had {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}. The board ran out {8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and Tuna made his exit from the tournament for the second time.

Daniel Dvoress Eliminated

We picked up the action on a {7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop, with over 55,000 already in the middle. Steve O'Dwyer was in the small blind and had a 25,000 chip in front of him. Dvoress, on the button, took several minutes before moving all in. The shove, around 110,000, got instantly called by O'Dwyer.

Steve O'Dwyer: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}
Daniel Dvoress: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Dvoress' pocket queens were in rough shape against O'Dwyer's aces. Neither the {4-Diamonds} turn nor {6-Spades} river improved Dvoress' hand, sending the Canadian high roller to the rail.
