Aucun des quatre derniers rescapés du WSOP Head's Up Championship à 25 000$ n'avaient remporté de World Series Of Poker. Dario Sammartino, Kevin Rabichow et Christoph Vogelsang devront attendre, c'était le tour de Dan Smith, dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche à Las Vegas.
Les 509 717$ encaissés sont un joli bonus mais Dan Smith n'avait que la victoire en tête et son émotion était palpable après un ultime head's up long et disputé contre le joueur allemand.
Dan Smith a dominé Dario Sammartino et Christoph Vogelsang dans la nuit pour enfin gagner aux WSOP. Depuis une première place payée aux World Series en 2010, le joueur US avait cumulé 8 podiums sur ce festival dont une place de runner-up sur le High Roller for One Drop pour plus de 3 millions de dollars.
Dan Smith a aussi cumulé plus de 10 millions de gains sur les 38,7 amassés en carrière sur le circuit... personnage incontournable des étés à Las Vegas, l'Américain tient sa victoire référence. "C'était un dernier match compliqué, beaucoup de mains folles et j'avais l'impression que tout était contre moi. Je ne suis pas très émotif ou sentimental mais aujourd'hui c'était tout pour le bracelet. J'ai eu besoin de réussite pour l'emporter mais je prends", a indiqué un Dan Smith sous le choc.
"C'est toujours un truc qui était dans un coin de ma tête mais je n'avais pas non plus un stress de fou que cela ne soit pas encore arrivé", a ajouté le vainqueur du HU Championship 2022.

"Je suis très fier de mes accomplissements dans le poker et je crois que ce bracelet est important pour mon palmarès et la trace que je laisse dans le poker. Cela peut paraitre fou mais je suis encore plus fier de ce que la communauté et moi-même avaons fait ensemble avec le Double Up Drive", a enchaîné Dan Smith.
"Nous avons levé près de 25 millions de dollars pour des causes justes et bien que le poker soit ma passion, des milliers de gens sont vivants à cause de cette initiative. Je suis heureux que le poker ait été mon moyen de faire autant de bien mais j'ai une fierté immense et beaucoup d'optimiste pour continuer à faire le bien grâce à ce projet", a poursuivi celui qui profite de ce succès pour dépasser Jason Koon à la 7e place de la All Time Money List.
La victoire de Dan Smith intervient sur un tournoi qui ne réussait que 64 joueurs mais quels joueurs. Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Anthony Zinno Alex Foxen ou Erik Seidel ont participé au prizepool sans atteindre les 8 places payées.
Ils n'étaient que 4 à revenir la nuit dernière et si les demi-finales ont été accrochées en début de partie, Smith et Vogelsang ont peu à peu pris les commandes. L'Allemand a été le premier à conclure alors que Smith est repassé derrière Dario Sammartino.
Le futur vainqueur a été à tapis préflop en étant couvert mais il avait le meilleur jeu et a tenu. Désormais devant au chipcount, Dan Smith a mis la pression et la profondeur s'est réduite. L'Italien a finalement mis ses 18 blindes directement du bouton avec

Dan Smith a battu Jake Daniels, Laszlo Bujtas, Alex Foxen, Jonathan Jaffe, Dario Sammartino et Chris Vogelsang pour triompher, un parcours du combattant. "C'était un gros buy-in, un field costaud et chaque match a été très dur. Les gens aiment critiquer Christoph mais c'est un sacré joueur. Il prend son temps car il réfléchit dans chaque spot, il n'y avait pas de pot facile à voler, chaque pot a été une bataille. C'était vraiment un tournoi cool à gagner", a conclu Dan Smith avant de défendre un peu son bilan.
"J'ai eu de grands succès aux World Series. J'ai fait tellement de podiums et de 3e place... si c'est ma 'malchance' en carrière ou dans la vie, alors j'étais déjà béni... je crois que j'avais des résultats supers mais cette victoire réhausse le tout", a terminé le vainqueur de l'Event #6.
