Silicon Valley's Chamath Palihapitiya Returns to the WSOP After a Decade

For many part-time players, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a chance to get away from work and spend some time in Las Vegas playing poker and chasing a bracelet.

One of those part-time bracelet hopefuls is venture capitalist and longtime poker player Chamath Palihapitiya, an early Facebook executive and the founder and CEO of the investment firm Social Capital. After more than a decade off of the WSOP felt, the billionaire returned to the World Series to take his shot at winning a bracelet in Event #29: $100,000 High Roller.

PokerNews caught up with Palihapitiya earlier in the series as he battled in a Day 1 field that included Chance Kornuth, Alex Foxen, Chris Brewer plenty more of the world's top high-roller players.

Deeb Wins One Without Showdown

Action caught up to a hand between Shaun Deeb on the button and a player in middle position on a board reading 5♥8♦7♣K♦A♣.

The middle position player checked and after a moment of deliberation, Deeb moved all-in for around a pot-sized bet of 34,000, with the middle position player making the fold.

Szuchopa Claims Rast Bounty

Brian Rast Is Inducted Into Poker Hall of Fame in 2023

Yun Li moved all in from early position for 1,200 and was called by Ferenc Szuchopa on the button. Brian Rast in the small blind moved all in for 10,100 and was called by Szuchopa.

Ferenc Szuchopa: A♣Q♦

Rast was in poor shape and got no help on the 10♣4♥3♠7♦7♣ board. Yun Li grabbed the small main pot, but Szuchopa won the larger side pot and more importantly, the $2,023 bounty that was on Rast's head. Rast left the room heading for his first cash game of the summer.

"You're drawing stone dead," said the middle position player as the dealer put out the 9♦, completing Coutinho's king-high straight and sending the middle position player to the rail.

"Oh well, I soul-read you," mentioned the player on his way out of the tournament area. "Your artery was pumping," said the player, eliciting a laugh from Coutinho.

Stolzenfeld Cracks Aces to Move into Six-Figures

There were 37,000 in the middle at the turn with the board showing K♥10♦7♥4♦ and the button moved all in for 17,000. Steven Stolzenfeld in the hijack made the call and the cutoff folded.

Stolzenfeld flopped a set of tens to crack the button's aces. The 5♣ on the river completed the board and Stolzenfeld dragged in a huge pot.
