Toby Lewis Leads Final Seven in 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event

Niveau 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante

It took six days to bring the record-breaking field of 800 in the 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event down to its final table. 36 hopefuls that started the day were whittled down to seven over the course of seven levels. Each of the seven has already secured a massive cash of A$235,000 but all eyes will be on the first-place prize of A$1,800,000, which will be awarded to the victor in Crown Casino on Sunday, February 4.

Biggest story coming into the day was another deep run by former champions Ari Engel (2016) and Ami Barer (2014). No player has ever won the Aussie Millions Main Event twice, and it won't happen in 2018 as Barer (36th) and Engel (10th) both missed out on the final table.

England's Toby Lewis will start the final table as the chipleader with 5,835,000 in chips. The 28-year old from Southampton is easily the most recognizable name left in the field, and with $3,2 million dollar in lifetime winnings already amassed, including an EPT-title, the odds-on favorite to claim the prestigious title and ANTON Jewellery bracelet that's up for grabs.

Lewis' biggest hand of the day was a massive coin flip against the man who will come back second in chips: Espen Solaas (5,680,000). While Solaas may not have Lewis' pedigree coming into the final table, the Norwegian showed relentless aggression during Day 4 and is a dangerous contender. Solaas sat on top of the chip counts for most of the day and will have more than 100 big blinds to work with on the final day.

The Brit and Norwegian headline an international final table, as no less than six nationalities are represented among the final seven. Joining Lewis and Solaas are Ben Richardson (4,870,000), Mike del Vecchio (3,065,000), Stefan Huber (1,975,000), Chul-Hyon Park (1,670,000) and short stack Johan Schumacher (955,000). Boisterous rails were aplenty in the packed poker room of Crown Casino, with the rowdiest supporters cheering for Huber (the Germans) and Richardson (the local Aussies). All players and their supporters will return on Sunday, February 4, in what will no doubt be one of the loudest cheered final tables in recent memory.

Day 4 action

While the aforementioned seven can take a day’s rest before returning for the final on Sunday, February 4, for 31 others their shot at Aussie Millions glory ended on Day 4. Coming into the day, the biggest story was the unlikely deep run of not one, but two former champions: both Ari Engel (2016) and Ami Barer (2014) had a chance to win the prestigious Main Event for the second time.

It wasn't meant to be, though, as each of them failed to make it through to the final table. Barer was the first of them to go and finished in 36th place. After losing all-ins with fours against queens, then with queens himself against ace-jack, Barer was left short. Nine big blinds went in with queen-jack but he couldn't catch up against Schumacher's ace-trey, ending his attempt.

Engel made it through to the final ten, where he met his demise at the hands of Solaas. Holding pocket jacks, Engel was all in and ahead against Solaas' king-ten but a king on the turn ended his another attempt at Aussie Millions glory. Engel finished in 10th place and received A$120,000.

Other notables that busted out during the penultimate day were Daniel Nelson, Anthony Hachem, Tobias Hausen, who finished 3rd last year, and Day 2 chipleader Najeem Ajez. Two of the most accomplished pro's in the field bowed out in 15th and 14th place, respectively. After a raise from Lewis, Artur Koren shoved 27 big blinds in the middle with pocket deuces. Unfortunately for Koren, Lewis held kings and knocked the Austrian out. Aaron Lim, a two-time APPT champion, shoved king-jack into the pocket jacks of Richardson in a blind-on-blind confrontation and couldn't catch up to bust shortly after Koren.

Tu Lan, Kim Au and Ross Grammer busted next and had to settle for A$120,000 in prize money. Next to go was up-and-coming star Kahle Burns. The Australian Poker Young Achiever Award winner was short stacked with the final nine players. With ten-seven suited, he found himself at risk against ace-eight and bowed out after an ace hit the flop.

With eight players left, one more player had to bust out before the official final table was set. It took three hours before Chen An Lin finally became the one to succumb. It was a classic setup - ace-king against the aces of Richardson - to deny Lin the final table.

The final table will commence on Sunday, February 4, at 12:30 p.m. local time. The final table will be live streamed on Twitch.tv, powered by runitup, and will be broadcasted with holecards up on a 30-minute security delay. There will be 23 minutes left in level 26 with blinds at 25,000/50,000 and a running ante of 5,000.

Chen An Lin Eliminated in 8th Place (A$175,000)

Niveau 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Chen An Lin
Chen An Lin

In a limped battle of the blinds the flop on the outer table showed {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} and Ben Richardson bet 55,000, which Chen An Lin called. On the {7-Diamonds} turn, Richardson made it 130,000 to go and Lin called once more before the {2-Clubs} river completed the board. Richardson's third bet was worth 300,000 and Lin reluctantly called, then mucked when the Aussie flipped over {K-Hearts}{7-Clubs} for kings and sevens.

The next hand, Chul-Hyon Park raised to 125,000 and Lin shoved the small blind to force a fold.

Right after, it was Richardson that raised to 105,000 first to act and Lin moved all in for the second hand in a row. Richardson snap-called and both players were about to table their cards before realizing that the feature table was still in a hand. Once that was finished, the cards were indeed turned over and Richardson's rail started cheering.

Chen An Lin: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}
Ben Richardson: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}

After the {Q-Spades}{J-Hearts}{4-Hearts} flop, some "ohhhh's" followed from the rail as Lin had picked up a straight draw. The {K-Spades} turn gave him some more outs with a king to double and a ten to chop. However, the {A-Diamonds} on the river failed to improve Lin and he was eliminated in 8th place for A$175,000.

All remaining seven players will now bag up their chips and bag for tonight, the live-streamed table will take place on Sunday February 4th, 2018. A recap of today's action is to follow.

Kahle Burns Eliminated in 9th Place (A$175,000)

Kahle Burns
Kahle Burns

Action got folded to Kahle Burns on the button, who had 335,000 in chips left. He put 300,000 of that forward, committing himself to the hand. Johan Schumacher shoved 1,035,000 from the small blind, Chul-Hyon Park folded his big blind and Burns put the extra chips in.

Kahle Burns: {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Johan Schumacher: {A-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

The {A-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} flop was about as bad as it could get for Burns, who now needed runner-runner to survive. The {Q-Spades} on the turn opened up one of the backdoors, as a king would give him a miracle straight. The river {9-Clubs} wasn't one of those and Burns bowed out in 9th place. The Australian Poker Young Achiever Award winner received A$175,000 for his deep run.

Ari Engel Eliminated in 10th Place (A$120,000)

Ari Engel

Ari Engel raised to 90,000 first to act. Stefan Huber made it 300,000 on the button. Small blind Espen Solaas announced all in, covering everyone. Engel took some time. He counted down his stack of about 1.5 million. Then, he dropped some chips in the middle. Huber grabbed a stack of chips to bluff his friends on the rail and then quickly folded with a smile.

Ari Engel: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}
Espen Solaas: {k-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

Engel stayed best as {6-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{a-Diamonds} flopped. However, the {k-Spades} turn caused him to grimace and turn away from the table. The river was the {9-Spades}, no help to Engel, and he slowly made his way to payouts.

With action on Espen Solaas in the cutoff, he simply flung six T-100,000 chips towards the middle, effectively putting the three short-stacked players behind him to a decision for all their chips. Kim Au was the first after Solaas to act and he called all in for 530,000. Mike Del Vecchio quickly folded.

Ross Grammer looked at his cards in the big blind and let out a faint smile. Despite not being super happy with the situation, he shoved all in for 835,000 and Solaas put the few extra chips in.

Ross Grammer: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Kim Au: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Esper Solaas: {J-Spades}{10-Spades}

The players showed up with nicely spread out hands, with both Au and Grammer at risk. The flop was {Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{2-Spades}, keeping Au in the lead with his pair of fives. The {6-Clubs} on the turn remained safe for Au, who was close to a triple-up.

The crowd watched in anticipation as the dealer burned and turned the {10-Clubs} on the river. The 'ooooh's resonated through the Crown casino as Solaas had hit his ten to knock out two birds with one stone. Both Au and Grammer made their way to the exit, each of them A$120,000 richer.

Tu Lan Eliminated in 13th Place (A$80,000)

Toby Lewis raised to 60,000 from under the gun holding {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Tu Lan picked up {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} in the small blind and chose to call, getting Mike Del Vecchio with {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} in the big blind in as well.

The all-spade {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{9-Spades} flop proved fireworks. Lan and Del Vecchio checked, Lewis bet 90,000, Lan check-raised to 325,000, Del Vecchio quickly folded, Lewis moved all in and Lan called.

Lewis had twelve outs running on the flop and added six more when the {8-Hearts} rolled off on the turn. Lewis needed a spade, ace, jack or six to knock out Lan and got the {6-Hearts} to do so. The Chinese player finished in 13th place and received A$80,000 for his accomplishment.

A small break will commence as players are being balanced to the final two tables.

Lewis Wins the Biggest Flip of the Tournament

Niveau 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Toby Lewis
Toby Lewis

Directly after busting Artur Koren, Toby Lewis was involved in another important clash. It was Espen Solaas who raised to 70,000 from under the gun. Lewis three-bet to 300,000 from the big blind, Solaas four-bet to 715,000, Lewis five-bet shoved 2,605,000 and Solaas called it off to create the biggest pot of the tournament by far.

Toby Lewis: {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}
Espen Solaas: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

It was a massive flip for either player: Lewis would either go bust or become the new chipleader, whereas a Solaas hold would result in the Norwegian holding more than 1/3rd of all the chips in play with 13 players left.

The {K-Spades}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop brought the king to pair up Lewis and give him the lead. Solaas was looking for one of the queens but didn't find them on the {8-Hearts} turn or {9-Spades} river. Lewis is the new chipleader.

Artur Koren raised to 85,000 in the small blind with {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, Esper Solaas three-bet all in with {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} and Koren folded. Two hands later, Toby Lewis raised to 60,000 under the gun, Koren shoved 720,000 one seat over, and Lewis snap-called when it was back on him.

Artur Koren: {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades}
Toby Lewis: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

Koren got himself in a deep hole and wasn't able to wiggle his way out of it: {7-Clubs}{6-Spades}{9-Hearts}{A-Spades}{10-Hearts}. The Austrian high roller made his way out off the feature stage to collect his A$80,000 reward.

Niveau 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Szymon Wysocki
Szymon Wysocki

In the first hand after the dinner break, Szymon Wysocki picked up {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts} in the small blind. Action was folded to him and he shoved all in. Artur Koren folded in the big blind to give Wysocki the blinds and antes.

In the next hand, Wysocki shoved 355,000 on the button and Koren reshoved 545,000 from the small blind.

Szymon Wysocki: {A-Spades}{4-Spades}
Artur Koren: {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

The {3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop was one of the most exciting ones that could roll off, giving Wysocki the flopped wheel but Koren a flush draw. The {Q-Spades} on the turn didn't help Koren, who needed a heart to knock out Wysocki. The river was the {9-Hearts} - completing Koren's flush - and Wysocki was eliminated in 16th place.
