Leo Yan Ho Cheng Wins Huge Pot Against Philipp Gruissem

Niveau 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

When we got to the table, Philipp Gruissem had bet 60,000 into a pot of just under 70,000. The board was {k-Spades}{8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs} and his opponent, Leo Yan Ho Cheng was tanking and eventually made the call, albeit seemingly unassuredly. Gruissem turned over {a-Hearts}{9-Spades} for a pair of nines, while Cheng held {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for top pair and took down the pot.

Dutch Up And Down

Niveau 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Steven van Zadelhoff
Steven van Zadelhoff

Steven van Zadelhoff pulled us over to describe the hand he doubled in, in all of its glorious detail. "I had the second best starting hand in poker, and he had one better. Well, until the flop that was," he laughed. Van Zadelhoff is now sitting at a solid 120,000.

Lady Fortune gives and takes, so to speak, which meant Govert Metaal had to take one for the team to balance the scales. After a raise to 2,800 and a three-bet to 8,000, Metaal picked up the best starting hand in poker himself and shoved for 28,000. The reraiser called with {A-}{K-} and spiked a king on both the flop and the turn to eliminate Metaal. Metaal doesn't bend easy, though, and he quickly fired another bullet.

Natasha Barbour Loses a Little One

Niveau 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The player in the cutoff raised to 2,000 and Natasha Barbour called on the button. The flop came {j-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts} and her opponent checked. Barbour bet 2,500 and her opponent called.

The turn was the {k-Clubs} and her opponent led this time for 3,000. Barbour raised to 8,000 and her opponent called.

The river was the {8-Spades} and both players checked. Her opponent turned over {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Barbour buried her face in her hands, shaking her head seemingly in disbelief as she mucked her hand face down.

Harrison Gimbel Wins Against Gianluca Speranza

Niveau 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante

Harrison Gimbel raised to 2,500 under the gun and Gianluca Speranza called in the hijack as well as Kitty Kuo in the big blind. The flop came {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. Kuo checked and Gimbel continued for 3,600. Speranza called and Kuo folded.

The turn was the {4-Spades} and Gimbel checked to his opponent who bet 7,600. Gimbel called.

On the river which was the {8-Diamonds} Gimbel checked and Speranza thought for a long time before electing to check behind. Gimbel showed {j-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and Speranza shook his head as he slammed his cards into the muck.

Charlie Carrel Eliminated By Sebastian Veghinas

Niveau 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

On a board of {J-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, Charlie Carrel had moved all in for 18,300, which was more than the size of the pot. Behind him, Sebastian Veghinas thought for a bit, then moved all in for a whopping 54,800.

It brought the action to the third player in the hand, Sirfan Hissou, who appeared to have a huge hand for the situation. He shook his hand, removed his sunglasses, stared intensely at Veghinas, then tried to chat him up to get a read.

"I beat aces," he says to Veghinas.

The dealer quickly informed no talking of any kind was allowed, as it was a multi-way pot. Veghinas, not the one to back down from a verbal war, and Hissou remained silent for the remainder of the hand. The German counted out the calling chips, thought for a while longer, then folded {J-Spades}{10-Hearts} face-up with a pained expression on his face.

"Whoa, I want that one!", Carrel laughed, as he tried to reach for the mucked hand.

Charlie Carrel: {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Sebastian Veghinas: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

Silently, Hissou witnessed how the dealer burned and turned the {A-Diamonds}, followed by the {10-Spades} river, which would've kept his hand in front on showdown. As it was, Veghinas now raked in the pot and Carrel was eliminated.

"I'm winning this tournament. Write that down," Veghinas confidently remarked afterwards.
