The 2023 edition of the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo festival runs from April 26 through May 6 at the luxurious Monte Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort. You already know that PokerNews is bringing you live and exclusive coverage from seven of the biggest EPT Monte Carlo events, including the prestigious Main Event, the tournament every player wants to win.

Some of poker's most recognizable faces and names have returned home from a trip to Monaco with the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event trophy in tow. Fourteen poker stars have written their names in the EPT's history books under the heading EPT Monte Carlo Main Event champion.

Jozonis Wins It Preflop

Dominik Nitsche opened the cutoff for 12,000. Yuan Li was in the big blind and had a tough decision. In a move rarely seen, he used a time bank chip preflop, but after his second countdown reached the halfway mark, he got out of the way.

Tomas Jozonis was in the big blind and also thought for a bit. He did not need a time bank extension, however, as he put out the raise to 70,000 towards the end of his regular time.

Nitsche asked for a count but found it to be too much and let his hand go.

The action folded around to Sam Grafton in the small blind who moved all in, covering the 83,000 remaining for Isaac Haxton in the big blind, who snap-called.

Haxton was slightly ahead but would need to dodge the live cards for Grafton. The board did just that on a 7♥5♣2♠8♦10♣ to give Haxton the check mark and full double up.

Grafton Checks Back

Sam Grafton raised to 12,000 and Mikita Badziakouski was the only caller from the big blind to see a flop of 8♠A♠2♦.

Badziakouski checked the flop and called when Grafton slid out 9,000. The turn was Q♥.

Badizakouski check-called a bet of 53,000 on the turn and the river was Q♠.

After Badziakouski checked the river, Grafton went into thought for a moment before he checked back. Badziakouski showed K♠10♠ for the flush and Grafton flashed the losing hand before he tossed it in the muck.

Danchev Bites the Dust

Dimitar Danchev raised to 13,000 from the hijack and the action folded to Dominykas Mikolaitis in the small blind. He put in a three-bet to 50,000 before Danchev four-bet shoved his 155,000 stack in. A snap call from Mikolaitis followed and Danchev was at risk to lose his tournament life.

Danchev was on the lookout for an ace, however none appeared on the low board of 6♠6♥8♥5♣10♣. Danchev was eliminated in 39th place as the field creeps closer to the magic number of 31 players.

O'Dwyer Gets Thin Value From Kamphues

The action folded to Timo Kamphues who limped in from the small blind and Steve O'Dwyer checked his option in the big blind.

The flop came Q♦4♦2♠ and Kamphues check-called a bet of 6,000 from O'Dwyer. On the 9♦ turn both players tapped the table for a check to the 4♣ river.

Kamphues checked a third time and O'Dwyer took close to 30 seconds before betting 30,000. Kamphues went deep in the tank and, after using one time bank chip, eventually made the call.

O'Dwyer tabled 10♣2♣ for bottom pair and scored the pot when Kamphues mucked his cards.

Oya and Beresford Battle for Chip Lead

Roman Samoylov started the action with a minraise to 12,000 from under the gun. In the next seat over, Masashi Oya put in a three-bet to 35,000 before Beresford made it 80,000 to go from the cutoff. Samoylov did not like what he had caused and folded. Following, Oya put forward all his time bank chips but the dealer only needed to take one off the stack before he put in the call.

The four-bet pot between two of the big stacks then saw a flop of 8♠3♠2♥. Beresford continues his aggression with a small continuation-bet of 45,000, which Oya check-called.

Oya checked again on the 9♥ turn and Beresford now put a whopping 150,000 chips in the middle. Again, Oya laid down all of his white time bank chips in front of him. And again, the dealer took only one before Oya made his decision. This time, he announced an all-in.

Beresford looked appalled, peeked at his cards once or twice, and tried to quickly count his chips. Before his allocated 30 seconds were over, he made the fold. Beresford is down to just under an average stack, while Oya now has the biggest one in the room.
