Turgeman Bags Chiplead on Day 1a; Zainescu and Moolhuizen Through With a Big Stack

Niveau 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Mateusz Moolhuizen
Mateusz Moolhuizen

Yaron Turgeman is the chip leader after Day 1a of the 2018 Unibet Open Bucharest Main Event, bagging 302,500 chips after 11 one-hour levels of play. With that, he’s the only player to have over 300,000 in chips. Turgeman is followed by Carmen Zainescu (240,500) and Mateusz Moolhuizen (212,000).

The tournament started with just 37 players in their seats but all the tables filled up during the first two levels of the day. The total number of players on Day 1a is set at 149 players. At the end of the day, there were just 32 players who bagged a stack for Day 2 and it was Turgeman who bagged the biggest. Zainescu and Moolhuizen complete the top three of biggest stacks to survive Day 1a. Players who busted the tournament today have the opportunity to reenter the tournament on Day 1c, August 3, 8 p.m. local time.

Some of the notable players that entered Day 1a but weren’t able to make Day 2 include Unibet Ambassadors Sophia White and Daiva Byrne, Unibet.fr Pro Quentin Lecomte, Dehlia de Jong, and Gerrit van Lancker. Sander van Wesemael started the day off really well and he was the chip leader of the tournament after two levels of play, but he wasn’t able to maintain his stack and he busted out a couple of levels later.

Zainescu is a familiar face at Unibet Open Bucharest. She won the Ladies Event in December of 2017 after she beat De Jong heads-up. Zainescu and De Jong were reunited today as they played on the same table for a portion of the day. They weren't the only ladies in the tournament. Unibet Open tournaments attract quite a lot of women and today they even had Molly Bloom in the building, of the movie "Molly's Game".

Unibet Open regular Moolhuizen was able to make Day 2 of the Main Event with the third biggest stack so far. Moolhuizen had been grinding steady throughout the entire day and he finished with 212,000. Emelie Svenningsson had the chip lead at one point in the tournament, playing a stack of over 200,000, but she wasn’t able to end the day on a high note. She ended up bagging a below average stack of 75,500 when the day was over. Marius Gicovanu (207,500), Adrian Ionescu (205,000) and Ciprian Voican (202,000) are the only other players with stacks over 200,000.

The PokerNews team will be here in Bucharest to report on the tournament from start to finish. Day 1b will kick-off Friday, August 3 at 11 a.m. local time and for the players that have busted today’s Day 1a or tomorrow’s Day 1b, there’s still a chance to make Day 2 through the turbo Day 1c, with 20-minute levels instead of 60-minute levels. The players that will make Day 2 will combine on Saturday, August 4 and they’ll play to a winner on August 5.

Kooij Bluffs Everything Away

Niveau 9 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Andrei Tudose
Andrei Tudose

Andrei Tudose raised to 3,600 from middle position and Teun Kooij three-bet to 10,500 from the cutoff. The player in the small blind tagged along and so did Tudose.

The flop was {8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades} and it checked to Kooij. He fired another bet of 13,000 and after the player in the small blind folded it was Tudose with the call.

The turn came down and it was the {6-Diamonds} which paired the board. Tudose checked to Kooij who pushed all in for about 30,000. Within a second, Tudose threw in a single 100 chip to the middle to signal a call.

Kooij opened up {Q-Hearts}{J-Spades} for queen high and Tudose showed {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} for a full house.

The river was the {4-Spades} and Kooij was eliminated from the tournament while Tudose started stacking.

Vaseli Holds in Big All-In Pot

Niveau 8 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jean Florentin Vaseli
Jean Florentin Vaseli

The pot had about 40,000 in it when the board read {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and Tim English had 20,000 in front of him. Jean Florentin Vaseli was all in for about 55,000 and English had a decision to make. English called and opened up {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for a gutshot straight draw, two overcards, and the nut flush draw. Vaseli opened up {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and was well in the lead.

The river was the {6-Diamonds} and Vaseli held on to the best hand, scooping himself a pot worth about 150,000. English was left with only 13,000 after the hand, which is about 10 big blinds in the current level.

Flashbacks for De Jong

Niveau 3 : 150/300, 25 ante
Dehlia de Jong
Dehlia de Jong

Dehlia de Jong has quite the results if you look at the ladies events she has played in the past. Last year she finished runner-up in the ladies event here in Bucharest at the Unibet Open behind Carmen Zainescu and earlier this year she got second in Malta behind Ann-Roos Callens.

De Jong already had Callens on her direct right to relive her second-place finish, but now Zainescu joined the table on Callens' direct right. Daiva Byrne is also seated at the same table so the ladies have a nice warm-up tournament before their #QUEENRULES event tomorrow.

The Main Event Kicks Off at 11 A.M.

A new day, a new tournament. Today will mark the start of the €1,100 Main Event in the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel. The Unibet Open is looking to crown a champion in this event on August 5th after three days of play.

This is the third time the Unibet Open is in Bucharest. Traian Bostan won the tournament in 2016 who defeated a field of 603 entries collecting a nice payday of €100,000. Last years tournament saw a small decline in attendance numbers after the Main Event drew 502 hopefuls in 2017. Marius Pertea won the tournament last year, banking €90,925

Day 1a of the €1,100 Main Event will play out over 11 levels of 60 minutes. There will be a break after every two levels and all the players will start with 30,000 chips. The registration of the tournament is open until the end of level seven and play will conclude at approximately midnight local time. New at this Unibet Open stop is the option for the players who play Day 1a or Day 1b to re-enter the tournament and play Day 1c, a turbo version of Day 1 featuring 20-minute levels.

The PokerNews team will be here in Bucharest to cover the event from start to finish.
