Music Icon & Bracelet Winner Steve Albini's Death Puts Fabled 20-Year Poker Home Game on Pause

The death of musician, recording engineer and poker player Steve Albini hit the music world with a force like that of the incendiary device aimed at Earth pictured on Big Black's 1986 debut album Atomizer. It may have hit one group of Chicago poker players the hardest.

Albini, a two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner who recorded landmark works by bands like Nirvana and Pixies and who The New York Times described as "one of the most admired, and most divisive, figures in rock," was a key figure in a friend group that bonded, joked and supported one another over the poker table. For 20 years, they played in a weekly low-stakes Chicago home game often held in Electrical Audio that included bracelet winners like Jason Gola, Eric Rodawig and Brian Hastings. Now, the game is on hiatus after Albini's death in May as the group of poker pros, musicians and audio engineers adapts to a world without its figurehead.

PokerNews spoke with two of Albini's closest friends who were regulars in the game, Brandon Shack-Harris and Andrew Kosinski.

Dominykas Mikolaitis raised to 60,000 in middle position, Liv Boeree flatted in the hijack, and Scott Seiver three-bet all in for 365,000 in the cutoff to put himself at risk. Mikolaitis folded and Boeree made the call.

Boeree pulled ahead on the 3♠A♦9♠ flop, pairing her ace. The 3♥ turn and 8♥ river offered no help to Seiver, and he was sent to the rail.

Action folded to Rokas Asipauskas who raised to 60,000 from the hijack, and was called by the small blind Nick Maimone.

The flop came 4♣K♠8♠ and Maimone check-called a bet of 45,000 from Asipauskas.

After the 4♦ on the turn, Maimone again check-called a bet from Asipauskas, this time for 140,000.

Both players checked after the Q♦ on the river, and Asipauskas tabled 10♠10♣ to take the pot, as Maimone mucked his hand.

Corey Kempson opened to 75,000 on the button and Samuel Chartier called from the small blind. Phil Hellmuth three-bet to 350,000 from the big blind and Kempson four-bet shoved all in. Chartier quickly folded and Hellmuth used a time bank before sticking in an additional 450,000 chips.

Hellmuth must have had some type of feeling as we have all seen this play before against Alex Foxen. However, he wasn't as fortunate this time with the J♣10♠9♣5♠4♦ runout and there was no "white magic" for the 17x bracelet winner.

Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.

In the 21st episode, Connor speaks with Survivor legend Boston Rob, aka Rob Mariano, about growing up near Fenway Park, learning poker at the age of 6, studying psychology at Boston University, applying for Survivor and winning Season 22, his recent appearance on Deal or No Deal Island and filming an upcoming season of The Traitors.

Boston Rob also revealed a story about Costa Rican authorities raiding a mansion known to host high-stakes poker games during a 2006 filming that included Daniel Negreanu, Josh Arieh, David Williams, Michael Mizrachi and actress Cheryl Hines.

"(Gambling mogul) Calvin (Ayre) had a big party at the house, and they came in guns drawn," he said. "And we were fine, but we all had to stay at the party until they checked our passports and everything. I think it was a little bit of a shakedown. But we had a good weekend."
