Welcome to Day 1a of the 2022 WSOP International Circuit Main Event at King's Resort

Andrea Ricci Wins the 2021 WSOPC Main Event at King's Resort
Andrea Ricci Wins the 2021 WSOPC Main Event at King's Resort

The 2022 World Series of Poker International Circuit continues right where it concluded in the previous year, as the King's Resort in Rozvadov plays host to the popular mid-stakes contest once more. Europe's biggest poker arena has already been filled with action at the live poker tables for more than two weeks as the festival kicked off on January 5.

However, the crown jewel of the schedule still awaits with the €1,700 Main Event. Poker enthusiasts from near and far will be competing for the elusive WSOP Circuit gold ring and a seven-figure prize pool. The flagship tournament comes with a €1,000,000 guarantee and offers two starting days on January 21 and 22, respectively.

Day 1a is slated to get underway at 2pm local time and all participants receive 50,000 in chips. That is worth 250 big blinds in the first level, which features blinds of 100-200 and a big blind ante of 200. All levels last 60 minutes long and nine of them will be played on each of the two starting days with breaks every two levels.

The defending champion at King's Resort is Italy's Andrea Ricci, who defeated fellow countryman Simone Lombardo in September 2021. Back then, the tournament attracted a field of 912 entries and paid out €1,342,920 in prize money. Whether or not Ricci will return to King's in order to defend his title remains to be seen.

All participants can purchase up to two re-entries during each starting day and the late registration remains open for the first eleven levels, two levels into Day 2 on Sunday, January 23. The tournament concludes on January 25 and the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor from start to finish.

Ghashayar Chops With Merten

Iman Ghashayar

Iman Ghashayar raised to 700 and received two callers including Stanislav Koleno on the button. Thomas Merten then three-bet to 3,400 in the small blind and Ghashayar clicked it back to 8,000. Only Merten called and then check-jammed the {10-Spades}{9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} flop when facing a bet worth 11,000 for Ghashayar to call.

Merten revealed the {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} and Ghashayar had the equally strong {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}. The {4-Hearts} turn ensured the split pot, making the {j-Diamonds} river a formality. "So much drama for this," Ghashayar joked while Merten replied "I was hoping you had kings."

On the river of a completed board of {10-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}{j-Spades}{a-Clubs}, Vasileios Tsaknis checked from under the gun. Soufiane Jardi bet 5,000 into a pot of around 19,000 and Nicolas Bokowski then raised to 16,000 on the button. Tsaknis folded with a short stack and Jardi let go, too.

Bokowski flashed the {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and Tsaknis walked away from the table in disgust, indicating that he had made a big fold with a spade. Soon after, the Greek was eliminated.

With some 35,000 in the middle and the turn showing {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, Sergiu Covrig checked out of the big blind. Slimane Mameche bet 11,700 and was called by Kai Wattenberg on the button. Covrig then squeezed to around 90,000 with the biggest stack at the table. Mameche folded and Wattenberg called all-in.

Kai Wattenberg: {7-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}
Sergiu Covrig: {j-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

The {10-Diamonds} river improved Wattenberg to a flush and he doubled for 54,000. "Well, you definitely have some balls," Johann Roesnick said in table chat to which neighbor Wattenberg replied "I was sucked out so badly in the last tournament".

Carlo Savinelli was spotted on his way out of the tournament area and Emil Bise was on the brink to follow with a short stack. However, the WSOP bracelet winner and two time WSOPC ring champion then doubled for 18,600 against Victor Messika. The cards of the latter were mucked already as Bise's {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for queens full on the {q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} were the best hand.

On the {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{2-Spades} flop, Gulas Jr checked and Donnini bet 5,200 to take it down.

Thomas Hofmann ended up at risk on the heads-up turn of {q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{8-Spades} turn with a short stack and he was looked up by Michal Kovac.

Hofmann turned over the {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} for the top set while Kovac was hoping for a five or ten, holding {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} for the open-ender. The {5-Diamonds} river indeed improved Kovac to a straight and Hofmann hit the rail.

Six ways to the {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flop the action checked around and the {2-Clubs} followed on the turn. Antonio Artusa moved all-in or 20,500 and Robert Kokoska called. As the last player to act behind, Sharon Ben David folded and exposed the {k-Hearts}.

[Removed:347] Loses Lots of Chips and Gets a Penalty

Agostino Scozzari

A loud bang on the table could be heard from afar when [Removed:346] was not too pleased about the all-in showdown against Agostino Scozzari. His cards were already mucked as he paid off the 78,600 of Scozzari, who had earned a full double. The Italian's {a-Clubs}{3-Clubs} were good for the nuts on the {k-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{q-Hearts} board and he joined the big stacks.

Not only did [Removed:347] lose lots of chips but also earned a one round penalty for his outburst.
