Ivey and Hellmuth Headline Massive Day 2 of Action, as Field Plays All the Way Down to Final Table

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

Welcome to Day 2 of Event 37: $800 Deepstack No-Limit Hold’em! Today’s action will begin with 671 players out of an original field of 2,808 entries. It will undoubtedly be a manic day of action as the plan is to play all the way down to the final six. The money bubble will hit at some point in the early half of the day, as the top 422 players will cash.

Leading the field will be Jose Brito of Portugal who amassed an incredible stack of 776,000 as play ended last night. He will start Day 2 in good shape as he has more than 100,000 more than Danny Ghobrial who is second in chips with 671,500. Ben Gilbert (577,500), Toan Nguyen (555,500) and Bruce Rosenberg (535,000) round out the top five largest stacks. Also among the largest stacks to end the day was Jimmy D’Ambrosio, with 525,500 in chips.

Two of the biggest names in all of poker will return to compete today. Phil Ivey, who spent much of Day 1 short-stacked after a late in the day entry, will enter day Day 2 with a healthy stack of 260,000. And Phil Hellmuth, who will look to make another deep run in a large field No-Limit Hold’em event as he brings back 231,000 in chips.

Joining the Ivey, Hellmuth and the big stacks, are some other well known poker names such as Elio Fox (444,000), Kelly Minkin (289,000), Chris Moorman (269,500) and Jeremy Ausmus (159,500). All of these players and many more will be aiming to make a deep into the elite and big money stages of this tournament.

Play will restart at 12 p.m. local time at Level 16 with blinds at 2,500/5,000 and with a 5,000 big blind ante. Levels will remain at 40 minutes in length. There will be a 15-minute break after every three levels of play and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 24, the ninth level of play today.

Pokernews live updates team will be on hand to bring you all the fast-paced action as the field is trimmed all the way down until a final table.

Minkin's Ladies Crushed by Case Nine on River

Niveau 23 : 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Kelly Minkin

On a flop that read {q-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} Kelly Minkin had Eric Smidinger dominated in a set over set situation with {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts} against Smidinger's {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}, after they had got it all in.

The turn was the {8-Diamonds} to turn a boat for both players.

The river was the only card in the deck that could save Smidinger, the {9-Hearts}. As it fell all the players at the table reacted, generating curious looks from onlookers. Several pictures were snapped of the board and were no doubt added to social media to commemorate the extremely rare hand.

Minkin took it well and promised to run her stack back up, even though the devastating nine left her with a mere 60,000.

Csik Eliminates Ivey in Coin Flip

Niveau 27 : 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante

Chris Csik raised from the hijack to 125,000 and Phil Ivey piled all in for his remaining 1,205,000 from the cutoff. It folded back around the Csik who thought long and hard over the decision.

A sizable rail formed in the corner of the Pavilion to watch Csik stew over the decision, getting their chance to possibly witness the fate of Ivey.

After a couple of minutes, Csik told the table that they better call the clock on him, one player at the table obliged his request and called clock. The floor came over and announced thirty seconds, but before reaching the countdown Csik tossed in a stack to make the call.

It was a classic race for the 10-time bracelet winner's tournament life:

Ivey {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Csik {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}

The flop immediately hit Csik when it came the {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{6-Hearts} much to the disappointment of the rail that had formed. The turn was the {3-Clubs} and the river was the {6-Clubs} to seal Ivey's elimination after a deep run.

Hamid Feiz Leads the Final 26 Into Day 3 of Event #37: $800 No-Limit Hold'em Deepstack

Niveau 31 : 80,000/160,000, 160,000 ante

The top spots on the $800-entry Deepstack leaderboard changed throughout the day, but at the end of play on Day 2, it would be Hamid Feiz sitting at the top with an impressive 12,000,000 in chips.

Unlike Day 1 of the first-ever Event #37: $800 No-Limit Hold'em Deepstack which started slowly, Day 2 was action-packed from the moment cards were in the air. From the total of 2,808 entries, 671 players took their seats on Day 2, but only 422 would make the money, with a min-cash being worth $1,185. By the fourth level of play, the bubble had already burst, courtesy of a double knockout, so it didn’t take too long for the payout line to start forming.

An impressive list of notables returned on Day 2 to take their shot at the gold bracelet and a six-figure payday. While some of them fell short of making the money, others such as Chris Moorman, Kelly Minkin, DJ MacKinnon,Kristen Bicknell, Joe Kuether and Phil Hellmuth did cash. Minkin, who had one of the more memorable hands of the day when she flopped top set over middle set, only to have the all-in player hit a one-outer on the river, recovered nicely from that setback, finishing in 81st place for a payday of $3,134.

Arguably the most memorable hand of the day took place when Phil Ivey lost a race with his pocket tens against the ace-queen of Christopher Csik. Ivey three-bet shoved after Csik’s initial raise, which sent Csik deep into the tank. In fact, he tanked so long that he told the table to call the clock on him, which one of his tablemates finally did. Once the floor person came over and started the thirty-second clock, Csik made the call. Unfortunately for Ivey, and the rail that had formed to watch one of poker’s more well-known players, he lost his race when an ace came right on the flop and he was eliminated in 64th place, which was worth a $3,700 payday.

Also, cashing on Day 2 were Dusti Smith, who made a very deep run until she bowed out just before the last break of the day in 44th place, and two players playing in their first-ever WSOP tournament, Thomas Taylor in 389th place and Robert Farabee in 42nd place, respectively.

Originally play was scheduled to end once the field was down to the final six players, but an announcement was made during level 29 with 49 players still remaining that the players would take one last 15-minute break, come back and play two more levels and then bag up for the night.

Joseph Liberta was eliminated on the last hand of the night, so now 26 players will be returning on Day 3 to play down to a winner. All remaining players are guaranteed a minimum payday of $9,789, but of course, they will all be playing for the highly-coveted gold bracelet and the $297,537 in cash that comes along with it. Play will resume at 12 p.m. local time at level 32 with blinds of 100,000/200,000 and an ante of 200,000. The PokerNews team will be there from when the first card is dealt until the last card hits the felt and crowns a new champion in the process.
