Lyons Bets Into Two Pair

A player in early position limped in and Pat Lyons checked his option from the big blind. Lyons led out for 700 on the 
flop, and again for 1,000 on the 
turn. His opponent called both bets.
Lyons bet a third time on the 
river, putting in 1,200. His opponent again called. Lyons showed 
for a pair of fives, while his opponent showed 
for two pair, kings and nines.
"Can I ask you a bizarre question? Why did you play king-nine from all the way over there?," Lyons asked.
"King-nine is my second-favorite hand," his opponent responded.
