Pfenning Wins a Big One; Loses a Small One

Niveau 39 : Blinds 600,000/1,200,000, 1,200,000 ante
Eric Pfenning
Eric Pfenning

Robert Gittelman raised to 3,000,000 on the button and Eric Pfenning jammed for 8,000,000 in the small blind. Ka chun Kan mucked the big blind and Gittelman made the call.

Eric Pfenning: Q10
Robert Gittelman: 66

It was a flip for the 17,000,000 pot and the flop came Q72, pairing Pfenning's queen. The 7 paired the turn and the 9 landed on the river to complete the board and seal the double up for Pfenning.

Only a couple of hands later, Manual DeAlmeida limped in early position and Pfenning raised to 3,000,000. Kan was on the button and three-bet to 9,000,000, which was enough to take down the pot.

O'Donnell Does More Than Defend

Niveau 39 : Blinds 600,000/1,200,000, 1,200,000 ante

Ka Chun Ka raised in early position to an even 3,000,000. It folded to Kenneth O'Donnell in the big blind and he called. The dealer fanned out the 2A9 and O'Donnell chose to check. Ka Chun Ka barreled for 4,500,000 and and O'Donnell called.

The turn brought the 7 and both players checked..

The river paired the board, putting up the 9. This time O'Donnell took the initiative and bet 6,000,000. Ka weighed his options but opted for a fold.

The Two Failed Bluffs in One Week that Cost Doug Polk $700k

Niveau 39 : Blinds 600,000/1,200,000, 1,200,000 ante
Doug Polk

Chris Moneymaker had the Bluff of the Century in 2003. This past week, Doug Polk had perhaps the Failed Bluff of the Century.

On Sunday, heads-up for a bracelet, Polk bluffed off a significant portion of his stack at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) less than one week after his infamous bluff attempt that didn't get through on Hustler Casino Live's $1 million game.

In both instances, the Upswing Poker founder had a busted draw and attempted to use aggression to coerce his opponents into folding somewhat marginal holdings in massive pots. Both times, however, his efforts were unsuccessful and quite costly.

Andres Morales: 99
Ka Chun Kan: QQ

Morales had run into a bigger pair and couldn't find a nine on the A75J7 run out, sending him to the payout desk in eighth place.

Fabio Coppola Eliminated in 9th Place ($26,223)

Niveau 38 : Blinds 500,000/1,000,000, 1,000,000 ante
Fabio Coppola
Fabio Coppola

Fabio Coppola was in good spirits as the players moved to the featured table at the Horseshoe. He even took a group photo with the final 10 players before the cards were dealt.

He got serious on the first hand, though, and moved all in under the gun as the shortest stack at the table.

Players folded to Andres Morales, who was in the big blind and the second-shortest stack at the table. Morales made the call.

Coppola: A3
Morales: A7

The dealer placed K54 on the board, and then both players paired their ace when A arrived on the turn. The river saw 10 hit the board, and Morales’ seven kicker played to win the hand.

Coppola was sent to the rail in ninth place for $33,274.

Chi Nguyen Eliminated in 10th Place ($26,223)

Niveau 38 : Blinds 500,000/1,000,000, 1,000,000 ante
Chi Nguyen
Chi Nguyen

Chi Nguyen went all in for his remaining 10,500,000 in middle positition and was called by Robert Gittelman, who had him covered.

Chi Nguyen: AQ
Robert Gittelman: 1010

Gittelman expressed throughout the tournament that he's superstitious about watching the board run out, so every time he or someone else was at risk and all in preflop he steps away from the table and turned his back. Except for the time he didn't; he lost those times.

The flop brought the J9J to the hushed table, but when the A hit pulling Nguyen ahead, the table couldn't help but tell Gittelman the score. Gittelman, unwilling to turn around until the deed was done, chose not to listen to his tablemates' cries until the 10 hit the river and secured him a huge pot.

Chi Nguyen was eliminated on the final table bubble and the final nine have now moved under the lights of the main stage at the Horseshoe Event Center.
