Phil Galfond Offers Poker Hall of Fame Pick; Says Two Should Be Inducted Per Year

Niveau 23 : Blinds 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante

Phil Galfond has yet to make an appearance at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), and as he told PokerNews, right now he has no plans to play live.

“But who knows, plans change,” added Galfond, who has been playing online at WSOP.com.

While Galfond hasn’t been at the WSOP – well, at least Phil as his wife, Farah Galfond, has been competing – the three-time bracelet winner is still weighing in by his relatively new newsletter “PG’s Takes of the Week.”

One of the topics the online poker legend, who prior to the WSOP inserted himself in some drama involving Doug Polk and Charlie Carrel with a pointed letter, was that of the Poker Hall of Fame. Right now, the public is being solicited for nomination.

“The nominations for the Poker Hall of Fame are now open, presenting voters with a familiar dilemma: there are simply too many great options to choose from,” Galfond wrote before giving his picks.

Five-Way Limped Pot

Niveau 22 : Blinds 15,000/15,000, 30,000 ante

Matt Berkey started the hand by limping under the gun. Following suit was Andre Akkari in the hijack, Eric Yanovsky on the button, the player in the small blind and the big blind checked their option.

The flop came 8A10. With the action checked to Akkari, he took the lead in this pot for 55,000 and only Yanovsky called.

The 6 on the turn checked through to the 7 on the river. Akkari again bet out for 150,000. This time Yanovsky responded with a raise to, what appeared to be, just north of 500,000. Akkari folded.

Berkey Gets Sneaky and Sends Silver to the Rail

Niveau 22 : Blinds 15,000/15,000, 30,000 ante
Matt Berkey

Matt Berkey was under the gun and opted to take an underutilized line with a limp. Every other player folded and it made it all the way to Nate Silver in the big blind who only took a minute before jamming all in. Berkey made the call.

The cards hit the felt.

Nate Silver: JJ
Matt Berkey: KQ

Nate was in good shape as he saw a jack in the window. Unfortunately, the full flop was 10JA giving Berkey a straight. The 9 turn and 8 river wasn't able to help Silver fill up and he would hit the rail early.

Ausmus Gets to Showdown

Niveau 22 : Blinds 15,000/15,000, 30,000 ante
Jeremy Ausmus
Jeremy Ausmus

Action folded to John Pannucci on the button who opened to 60,000. The small blind folded but Jeremy Ausmus defended his big blind. The flop landed 554 and Ausmus quickly checked. Pannucci didn't take much time before putting out 40,000. Ausmus made the call.

The 10 hit the turn and Ausmus checked again. Pannucci went into the tank for a moment before putting out a bet of 130,000. Ausmus called again.

The K hit the river and action checked through quickly.

"Four," Ausmus said as he rolled over 64 for bottom pair. Pannucci sent his cards to the muck and Ausmus dragged the pot.

Ishizu Puts Kalas in a Tough Spot

Niveau 22 : Blinds 15,000/15,000, 30,000 ante

Kane Kalas raised from the small blind to 110,000, finding Tetsuma Ishizu in the big blind who defended.

On a flop of 1072, Kalas continued for 55,000. In response, Ishizu raised the bet to 130,000 and Kalas called.

Kalas played in flow on the 6 turn. Ishizu continued his aggression sliding in enough lavender chips to put Kalas all-in. Kalas folded allowing Ishizu to stack the chips.
