Among one of the most elite and star-studded fields on the World Series of Poker calender, Alex Foxen’s star shone the brightest on Day 1 of Event #71: $50,000 Pot-Limit Omaha High Roller.

The poker superstar and WSOP bracelet winner was spotted with more than 1,000,000 early on and never stopped accumulating chips. Foxen bagged up a massive stack of 2,868,000, far and away the largest among the 70 surviving players.

Jesse Lonis is one of the players looking up at Foxen on the leaderboard. Lonis doubled up against Jeremy Ausmus after a more than three-minute tank, then won a massive pot against John Riordan on his way to 1,460,000.

The third time was the charm for Ausmus on Day 1. The 2021 champion of this event had to reenter twice, but built up his stack to 1,291,000 on his third bullet. Defending champion Robert Cowen (1,187,000), Dylan Weisman (1,170,000), and Shaun Deeb (1,014,000) are also in the million-chip club.

Further down the leaderboard are Chance Kornuth (970,000), Freddy Deeb (873,000), and six-time WSOP bracelet winner Brian Rast (601,000), while Ben Lamb (298,000) and Benny Glaser (167,000) will have their work cut out for them tomorrow to climb back into contention. The likes of Josh Arieh, Jason Koon, Isaac Haxton, and $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha champion Ka Kwan Lau weren’t so unfortunate to survive the day and will have to try again tomorrow.

Late registration remains open until the start of play on Day 2 at 1 p.m. local time, so there is still an opportunity for more players to join the 167 who have already entered and smashed last year’s total of 106 entries. The action picks up tomorrow on Level 13 with blinds of 10,000/15,000 and a 15,000 big blind ante, meaning the starting stack of 300,000 will be worth just 20 big blinds at the start of the day.

Day 1 was a chance for chip leaders to emerge and players to put themselves in a position to make the money. Tomorrow will be a race toward the final table. PokerNews will be following all the action and providing live updates as the stars of the poker world once again converge on the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

Moncek Doubles Through Le and Busts Maksimov

Michael Moncek
Michael Moncek

Michael Moncek raised to 16,000 from an early position and earned calls from Allan Le in the small blind and Artem Maksimov in the big blind. The A102 flop brought a check from Le and Maksimov pushed all-in for the 33,000 he had left. Moncek called and then also called Le's check-raise to 110,000.

Le pushed all-in after the 8 turn and Moncek called all-in.

When the dealer pointed to Maksimov, the Russian instantly said "just run it, I am drawing dead" while he briefly showed his ace-king high combo.

Moncek had the AQ96 for the nut flush draw and a double gutshot while Le was ahead with the 10522 for a set of deuces. The J river gave Moncek a straight and he doubled for 238,000.

Picking up the action on the A64A turn, Yang Wang bet out of the big blind and then called a raise to 125,000 by Joao Vieira from one seat over. Wang bet the 9 river again for 55,000 and Vieira used one time bank before he made the call.

Wang briefly exposed his AK3Xx for the nut flush and trip aces but Vieira won the pot with the AQ62 for aces full of sixes.

Katz Can't Get Past Deeb

Cary Katz
Cary Katz

Four players went to a flop of 9K3 when Cary Katz, under the gun, moved all in for 221,000.

Two opponents quickly folded. "One more to go," a hopeful Katz said as action went on Shaun Deeb on the button. Deeb used up two time banks before he called.

Cary Katz: A432
Shaun Deeb: AK42

"We share the same cards," Deeb said as he was ahead with a pair of kings but needed to fade Katz's flush draw. The board ran out 76 and Katz missed everything.

"You always bust me," Katz said as he watched his chips absorbed into Deeb's stack.

"That's about the worst hand you could see," Deeb replied.

Tyler Brown
Tyler Brown

Freddy Deeb had 23,000 out in front on the button and Tyler Brown then raised the pot from middle position for another 54,000 on top of that. Deeb elected to call and Brown instantly jammed the K94 flop, earning a snap-call by Deeb.

Tyler Brown: AQ107
Freddy Deeb: AKJ9

Brown was behind with the nut flush draw and made an inferior pair on the Q turn. The 10 river gave Deeb broadway and Brown was sent to the rail.

"I think I am your good luck charm," Erik Seidel, two seats over, said with a grin.

"I think so, too," Deeb replied. "That's why I doubled you up."

Azoulay Among the Chip Leaders

Jonathan Azoulay

Santhosh Suvarna had reentered not long ago and built some profit only to see most of it obliterated in a massive pot.

The cards of Suvarna were mucked with a main pot of more than 200,000 in the middle and a full double for Jonathan Azoulay for 324,000. On a board of K645A, the KK53 of Azoulay had hit the flop hard with top set and an open-ender to drag in one of the biggest pots of the day so far.

Wang Takes Four-Way Pot

David Wang
David Wang

David Wang raised to 14,000 from under the gun and Conrad De Armas intended to call but put in too many chips. Some of the players at the table wanted to call the floor but De Armas was eventually allowed to take back the extra he had put in the pot.

Wang received two other callers, including Sam Soverel in the big blind, as they went four ways to the 5KK flop. All four players checked.

The 7 fell on the turn. This time Wang bet 15,000 and only De Armas called. The river came the 8 and Wang now bet 60,000.

De Armas snap-called but mucked when Wang showed AKJ7 for a full house to take down the pot.

Down to a mere 15,500 and in the big blind, Dylan Weisman faced a raise to 8,000 by Joao Simao and the calls by Sam Soverel as well as David Wang. Having paid the big blind ante, Weisman moved all-in for 12,500 and Simao instantly announced pot. However, the action was capped and three players called the all-in of Weisman.

Having checked the 1094 flop, Simao checked the J turn and Soverel bet 33,000 for both active opponents to call. Simao also checked the Q river. Soverel bet 55,000 and his two opponents folded.

Soverel exposed his AK62 for the nut flush and the Q863 of Weisman was no good.
