Raymond Chiu
Raymond Chiu

Welcome back to the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas for Day 2 of the $600 PokerNews Deepstack Championship, where cards will be back in the air at 11 a.m. local time. Yesterday, a bumper field of 5,110 hopefuls showed up to create one of the biggest fields of the summer. Out of those 5,110 entrants, 767 found a bag, all of whom secured a cash of at least $1,201 out of the total prize pool of $2,606,100.

On Day 2, the field will be again decimated as we inch closer to the first-place prize of $282,876 and the gold that awaits the last person standing in this event. It's not just the glimmering gold from the coveted bracelet shining on the horizon. Being a PokerNews sponsored event, the winner will receive a unique, commemorative 24k-karat gold coin as an additional reward.

Huge River Saves Daterao

Jugal Daterao
Jugal Daterao

From under the gun, Jugal Daterao had opened the action, and Yosuke Miki defended the big blind. Picking up action on the turn, the board read Q83K, and all the chips flew in the middle to create a pot of nearly a million in chips.

Jugal Daterao: AA
Yosuke Miki: K8

Miki had turned two pair and found himself in a fantastic spot to get himself up over a million. The river, however, brought the 3, counterfeiting his two pair and handing the winner to Daterao.

Kabrhel Eliminated, Table Relieved

Niveau 20 : Blinds 8,000/16,000, 16,000 ante
Martin Kabrhel

"Bye! Bye-bye!" said Jugal Daterao jubilantly, while standing and waving to Martin Kabrhel. "Goodbye chip leader! Rebuy line is that way!"

Daterao had just sent Kabrhel to the rail after shoving on his opponent on a 874 flop. Kabrhel had called all in for his tournament life with 109 for straight and flush draws, but was still behind to the A4 of Daterao.

The turn J completed everyone's flush, but Daterao had made the nut flush to eliminate Kabrhel.

"Now we can all relax," said stablemate Phillip Cox, as a subdued Kabrhel headed for the rail.

Lapham's Incredible Journey

Niveau 25 : Blinds 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Bryan Lapham
Bryan Lapham

With 350,000 already in the pot and the flop showing J63, Josecarlos Abreu checked, followed by Bryan Lapham. Juan Lamprea then bet 105,000, which Abreu called. Lapham, however, had other plans and went all in for 1,145,000, prompting Lamprea to fold. After some deliberation, Abreu reluctantly called, leading to a showdown.

Josecarlos Abreu: 99All in
Bryan Lapham: A9

Abreu celebrated loudly as he held the lead. Lapham was hoping for a spade or an ace to win the pot. However, the turn 6 and river J did not improve his hand. Despite the table thinking Lapham was out, a recount by the dealer revealed he had 35,000 more than Abreu and remained in the game.

Lapham folded the very next hand and was supposed to be forced all in the hand after that, but the floor announced that the table was going to break to balance out the other tables. Hoping for a better position at the next table, Lapham was disappointed to find himself as the big blind and therefore forced all in immediately.

With only 35,000 left, Lapham was automatically all in and called by four players. The flop came 637, and everyone checked to Gautm Lillaney, who made a bet. Nobody else wanted to play, so it went to showdown.

Lillaney revealed 106 for a pair of sixes. Lapham hadn't looked at his cards yet, but when he did, he turned over A followed by A. The turn brought the third ace A, giving him a quintuple-up to 175,000.

Two hands later, Lapham found himself in another hand against Lillaney, where he managed to double up with A8 against 77 on the 10JAA4 board.

Zhang Cracks Zhang's Aces

Huifang Zhang

With two players seeing a board of K73 and about 390,000 in the middle, Sihao Zhang checked from the big blind and Huifang Zhang bet 115,000 from middle position. Sihao Zhang made the call.

On the 5 turn Sihao Zhang checked and Huifang Zhang bet 280,000. Sihao Zhang shoved for 2,280,000 and Huifang Zhang made the call with a covering stack to put Sihao Zhang at risk.

Sihao Zhang: 32 All in
Huifang Zhang: AA

Huifang Zhang was ahead with aces but needed to fade any two, three or spade. The 10 river brought the flush in for Sihao Zhang who dragged in a gargantuan pot while Huifang Zhang was left short-stacked.

"Dutch" Brown Eliminated

Jeremy "Dutch" Brown

Action folded to Jeremy "Dutch" Brown in the cutoff, who open-shoved for 580,000. Lorenzo Lavis called from the small blind to put the Minnesotan at risk.

Jeremy "Dutch" Brown: 109
Lorenzo Lavis: AQ

Lavis flopped Brown all but dead on the Q33 flop. The J on the turn brought a glimmer of hope with a potential backdoor straight opening up.

The dealer slowly revealed the river, only for the A to appear to eliminate Brown near the final level of the day.

Michel Molenaar

Previously, Arlen Sarte was in the cutoff and had three-bet to 360,000 after another player had opened. Michel Molenaar then cold four-bet shoved from the big blind and Sarte reluctantly gave it up after a minute of thought.

An orbit later, Molenaar raised to 160,000 from middle position, Sarte three-bet shoved 1,480,000 from the big blind and Molenaar called it off.

Arlen Sarte: 99
Michel Molenaar: AJ

Sarte locked it up after the 8429 turn, rendering the A on the river moot. Molenaar was down to six big blinds after the hand.

Sixty Players Advance to Day 3 of the $600 PokerNews Deepstack Championship

Niveau 27 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Kenny Huynh
Kenny Huynh

The sun has set on Day 2 of the $600 PokerNews Deepstack Championship, here at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas. The cards were back in the air at 11 a.m. local time when 767 players returned to their seats, and play continued until only 60 remained. Those players have bagged up their chips and will return Thursday for Day 3.

Day 2 started with a bang as the eliminations came fast and furious. The large field that spanned two sections of the Horseshoe Ballroom quickly whittled down to a little over 100 by dinner break.

Emerging from the fracas with the chip lead in tow was Kenny Huynh (5,920,000), one of only two players returning for Day 2 who has already won a bracelet. Huynh captured his bracelet in 2020 in a $400 No-Limit Hold'em online event that netted him $133,857. Chris Dombrowski (1,620,000) is the only other bracelet winner still in the hunt.

8Diogo CardosoPortugal4,600,00046
9Kenneth KempleUnited States4,550,00046
10Harrison AshdownUnited States4,175,00042

Things are tight at the top of the chip counts, with only eight big blinds separating Huyhn and fifth place. Michael Dobbs (5,805,000), Sihoa Zhang (5,605,000), Una Kelly (5,565,000), and Darryll Fish (5,130,000) are essentially one pot away from the title of chip leader. Fish is arguably the most experienced grinder among the final 60, having accumulated almost $5.3 million in earnings, although a bracelet has, thus far, eluded him. Could this be the event where Fish finally gets the proverbial monkey off his back?

Ray Henson (1,080,000) could challenge Fish for the unofficial title of most experienced player in the field because he has racked up close to $3.4 million in winnings and has numerous WSOP final tables under his belt. Henson has a trio of third place finishes on his resume; he'll hope to go two places deeper in this PokerNews event.

We lost many notable players such as Jamie Kerstetter, Ben Yu, Loni Hui, and Martin Kabrhel, who came into Day 2 as one of the biggest stacks. Kabrhel was eliminated when Jugal Daterao shoved all in on a draw-heavy flop, Kabrhel called with an open-ended straight draw and ten-high flush draw, finding himself against bottom pair and an ace-high flush draw. The turn gave both players a flush, however, Daterao's was better, and Kabrhel was eliminated when he missed his one out to a straight flush.

Sadly, none of the PokerNews Deepstack Challenge qualifiers progressed to Day 3. However, both Raymond Chiu and Michael Beattie played impressively throughout and saw healthy returns on their free entries.

Day 3 begins at 11 a.m. local time on June 27 at Level 28 with blinds at 50,000/100,000. Players will play down to five players with a 15-minute break every two levels. Stick with PokerNews for all the action in our inaugural WSOP bracelet event!
