John Monnette Leads the Remaining Eight Players

After another 10 levels of play in Event #22: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship, only eight players remain from the starting field of 92 entries. On top of the chip counts is two-time bracelet winner John Monnette with 1,051,000.

Day 2 began with 30 players and Monnette flew under the radar for the early portion of the day. When play reached the money at 14 players, Monnette had slightly less than his start-of-day count and was 10th in chips. However, a sizable triple up through Mike Watson and Mike Leah catapulted Monnette to the top of the chip counts. He remained there the rest of the day, and padded his lead by eliminating Shaun Deeb in 13th place and Watson in 11th place, en route to his bagging the chip lead and being in pole position to capture his third World Series of Poker bracelet.

Here is the Day 3 lineup and chip counts:

Jon Turner has been eliminated in tenth place and will receive $19,187.

He shoved his final 100,000 under the gun and Per Hildebrand shoved over the top to the tune of 204,000.

Hilderbrand stood pat quickly and Turner seemed to agonize over his decision. Eventually he decided to stand pat behind and Hildebrand showed {10-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-} against Turner's {10-}{8-}{6-}{3-}{2-}.

Hildebrand would three bet Darren Elias on the next hand and pick up another pot to put him at 360,000.

Mike Watson opened the action with a raise to 20,000 from under the gun and John Monnette three-bet to 70,000 in the big blind. Watson moved all in and Monnette asked "can I have a count please?" The shove was determined to be for 249,500 in total and Monnette called.

Monnette stood pat, as did Watson, and the latter announced "I have an eight" before showing {8-}{7-}{6-}{5-}{2-}. Monnette turned over the superior {8-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and Watson left the table with a "Jesus Christ" on the lips. The Canadian takes home $19,187, while Monnette became the first player above one million in chips.

Soon after his double up, Konstantin Maslak was all in and at risk again. Mike Watson raised to 20,000 on the button and Mike Leah called in the small blind. Maslak three-bet all in for around 235,000 and Watson folded. Leah gave it some consideration and called, then stood pat.

Maslak checked his cards carefully and drew one before the following cards were tabled.

Konstantin Maslak: {8-}{6-}{4-}{2-}
Mike Leah: {10-}{9-}{7-}{6-}{5-}

Maslak didn't squeeze his last card, but instead turned it over within a matter of moments and revealed a {Q-} to join the rail in 12th place. He receives $15,333 for his efforts and all remaining 11 hopefuls are now guaranteed at least $19,187.

After the showdown was over, Dario Sammartino turned over to the other table and joked "guys, what are you doing? We are busting everyone," as the third casualty in the money had been on this very table.

"Nice hand, John," said Deeb, as he tabled a defeated {8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-} to bust in 13th place.

On this hand, Mizrachi shoved all in, and Shaun Deeb called. Mizrachi stayed pat with {j-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}.

Deeb was drawing and showed {8-}{6-}{5-}{2-}. He pulled a ten to make {10-}{8-}{6-}{5-}{2-} and eliminate Mizrachi.

This Might Be Mike Leah's Level

Shaun Deeb Faces a Mike Leah Bet
Shaun Deeb Faces a Mike Leah Bet

Mike Leah just opened three hands in a row and managed to add 200,000 to his stack thanks to a double-up and a profitable pot against Shaun Deeb on the very next hand.

  • Leah opened the first hand to 12,500, and Mike Gorodinsky called from the big blind. Gorodinsky drew two and Leah drew one. Gorodinsky led, betting 50,000, and Leah went all in for 79,100 more. Gorodinsky called, and Leah showed {9-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. Gorodinsky said he had a nine-eight.
  • Then, Leah opened again the next hand. This time, Shaun Deeb three-bet to 41,000, and Leah called. Leah drew one, and Deeb stood pat. Leah led for 105,000, and Deeb took about 45 seconds before folding.
  • The next hand looked very similar when Leah opened to 12,500 and Deeb three-bet to 41,000. Only this time, Dario Sammartino shoved all in for 98,000. Leah took a while to make his decision. The clock was called, and the floor counted down to one, after which he and Deeb folded, and Sammartino won the hand. Leah showed his {10-}{7-}{4-}{3-}{2-} as he tossed it into the muck.

John Monnette Drops the Mikes

Niveau 15 : 2,500/5,000, 1,300 ante
John Monnette
John Monnette

On the first hand back from break, Mike Leah opened under the gun to 12,500. John Monnette three-bet from the small blind, making it 40,000. Mike Watson was in the big blind and he four-bet to 110,000.

Leah looked back at his hand and capped his cards with a single 5,000 chip. He asked for a rough count of Watson's remaining stack and eyed what Monnette had left as well. Then Leah went all in for roughly 450,000. Monnette didn't wait too long to call and Watson followed shortly after.

Monnette and Watson both stood pat in quick succession.

"Pat, pat?" questioned Leah, "I guess I need a backup plan."

Leah tossed one card.

"Eight-six-four," said Monnette as he rolled over {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}.

Watson showed {8-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and was in second place.

Leah rolled over {5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} and needed a seven or an eight to win. However, he hit the {10-Hearts}, giving him a ten. He said later that he broke a nine-perfect.

Monnette was the short stack and tripled up. Watson doubled his remaining stack through Leah and Leah was left with one of the shortest stacks remaining with just over 100,000.

Hertzel Zalewski Bubbles

Down to just 7,100, Hertzel Zalewski moved all in from under the gun and John Monnette raised to 13,000 on the button. Both players drew two cards and waited for the other tables to finish before proceeding with the showdown.

Hertzel Zalewski: {8-}{6-}{5-}
John Monnette: {6-}{5-}{3-}

Monnette picked up the {Q-} and Zalewski said, "You don't have to sweat anymore," after pairing his {8-}. Monnette's last card was a {4-} and Zalewski's {10-} didn't matter anymore as the money bubble burst. The remaining 14 players will now redraw to the last two tables, some of them may stand pat on their seats, though.
