Distancé au début de l'ultime duel, James Moore a mis un peu moins de 3 heures pour signer un superbe doublé sur le Super Seniors, le tournoi à 1000$ réservé aux joueurs de 65 ans et plus.
Tenant du titre, Moore, 66 ans, a battu Kerry Goldberg pour ajouter 259 230$ aux 230 626$ remportés sur ce même événement lors de l'édition précédente. Alors que les Championship sont en perte de vitesse sur cette 48e édition des Championnats du monde, le Super Seniors confirme sa montée en puissance.
C'est un fait les joueurs vieillissent et leur passion pour le poker ne s'arrête pas. Ils étaient donc 1 720 sur la ligne de départ pour un prizepool de 1,5 million de dollars contre 1476 entrants et 1,3 million de prizepool à l'été 2016. Runner-up et chipleader à 22 left à l'entame de ce Jour 3, Goldberg n'a pas gagné une montagne d'or mais il repart tout de même avec 160,120$. Radiologue de Philadelpie, Moore a révélé qu'il était un peu en état de choc après son improbable doublé. "Je veux que l'on parle de moi comme quelqu'un qui comprend très bien les fondamentaux du jeu", explique celui qui avait dit avoir été chanceux lors de son succès 2016. Moore a donc joué un peu plus en live pour se préparer et même disputé un WPT à Atlantic City pour améliorer son jeu.
C'était la deuxième année que le vainqueur avait le droit de participer, il compte probablement tenter la passe de 3 l'an prochain. "Je ne sais pas si je jouerais autre chose que le Seniors et le Super Seniors, on verra l'an prochain", a-t-il glissé.
Le tournoi a récompensé 258 joueurs dont le Français Jean-luc Adam (69e pour 3,284$) et l'acteur James Woods (34e). TJ Cloutier (174e et 6 bracelets au compteur), Susie Isaacs (2 bracelets et 211e) ajoutent une place d'honneur à leur palmarès tout comme Tom Franklin (89e) ou encore la légende suédoise Chris Bjorin (7e pour son 84e cash WSOP).
