In the final hand of the day, Morten Mortensen dragged a monster pot which gave him the end-of-day chip lead. The pot was already up over 35,000 as the board showed . Mortensen bet 20,000, and his opponent went in the tank. Eventually, he moved all in for 52,000, and Mortensen called with lightning speed.

Mortensen had his opponent drawing dead with the nut straight, making the river meaningless. With the pot of more than 100,000 chips, Mortensen ended the day as the chip leader with 276,000.

Champion du Monde en titre, Qui Nguyen a franchi l'obstacle en emballant 96 700 jetons. Deux autres vainqueurs du Main Event WSOP étaient en lice aussi et Martin Jacobson a souffert. Le Suédois est tombé à 2000 jetons avant de se retrouver à tapis avec 9 blindes dans le dernier niveau de la journée. Protégé par sa bonne étoile, le vainqueur 2014 a fait carré avec pour craquer les de son adversaire tricolore, Jérôme Arnould, et finir à 36 800 jetons quelques minutes plus tard.

La première journée a été dominée par deux joueurs européens, le Danois Morten Mortensen et le Britannique Sam Grafton. Mortensen, qui a cumulé plus d'un million de dollars de gains en carrière, a dépassé Grafton dans le dernier niveau, multipliant son tapis de départ par 9 pour terminer à 276 000 jetons. Son plus proche poursuivant n'a lui que multiplié son starting stack par un peu moins de 8 pour emballer 231 600 chips et vécu "une journée de rêve" selon ses propres termes. Très belle prestation aussi du professionnel Jonathan Little qui ensache 7 tapis de départ.
