A Catch-Up with Former WSOP APAC Champion Scott Davies

Niveau 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Scott Davies at last year's WSOP
Scott Davies at last year's WSOP

Four years ago Scott Davies took down the second-ever WSOP APAC Main Event here in Melbourne and he is back in 2018 for the Aussie Millions. We sat down on break to chat about him and how he very nearly didn't come this year!

"Back in 2014, that was my first time," said Davies. "I've come every year since then for the Aussie Millions. A big part of it for me personally is the nostalgia. [Winning the WSOP APAC] was the biggest thing ever to happen to me, and probably ever will happen to me.

"Even if I won something big again, the feeling just won't match up to the first time. Add on to that the fact that it's a beautiful city, and when you come down here you just get to fade the winter and have a little summer and it's great. Some of my best friends are Australian so it's really nice to come down here and spend time with them

"I almost didn’t come. My wife’s family are in Maui and we spend the holidays there. So after that, it's usually a really easy trip because you're already halfway here! This year, however, we didn't go. I spent the holidays in South America and it was difficult to get a flight here.

"So I ended up going home to play in Miami. I busted out of that on Day 2 and there was a flight available to Melbourne a couple of days later. So I booked it and packed my bags up and came down here!"

Davies bought in during the second level of the day, and admits that it's been slow going.

"I have just under starting stack. I wasn't going to play today. But I had to come in to pick up my receipt. And once I got here I really felt like playing! The field looks juicy! So I switched my ticket and bought in today."

At the other end of Davies' table is 2018 Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge winner Ben Lamb.

"I don’t think I’ve played with him before," said Davies. "He plays a lot higher stakes cash than I do! He also doesn’t play a lot of MTTs. He's down the other end and lost a cooler port so he's pretty short at the moment. I'm not going to say I wasn't happy to see that!

"The aim for today is to build a stack; slow and steady. It's important not to have any blow-ups in a structure like this. Just really pick your spots and feel out the table. I have a favourable table draw, and probably the best seat at that table.

"I just want to pick my spots carefully and just grind and try and not do anything stupid!"

Aussie Millions

While the 2018 Aussie Millions is still building up to its climax, the tournament organization has already announced the 2019 dates for the biggest tournament series in the Southern hemisphere. The 2019 Aussie Millions will run from Tuesday, January 15 until Monday, February 4. The action-packed schedule will include the official gold bracelet event, satellites and cash games, along with daily tournaments running for 21 consecutive days.

The coveted Main Event is slated to run over eight days from Sunday, January 27 until Sunday, February 3 with over 700 entrants expected and an estimated total prize pool of A$7 million. The Main Event will once again feature three starting days and qualifiers will already begin in March.

“The 2018 Aussie Millions is proving to be our biggest and best to date and we can’t wait to see what the 2019 tournament will bring as the poker stage has never been brighter, and the team are already hard at work to make the next event the biggest and best yet,” Aussie Millions tournament director Joel Williams said.

Nearly 100 poker tables will be set up across the award-winning Crown complex to accommodate the thousands of players from over 35 countries who visit Crown during January to compete for a share of a total estimated prize pool of over A$24 million. The current slate of individual events offered during the 2019 Aussie Millions is being finalised, with 26 official gold ring events expected and a broad range of other poker variations at both entry-level and championship level.

The full event-by-event schedule is expected to be released soon and will be uploaded to aussiemillions.com with full details.

More for Marquez

Paul Michaelis was recently moved to the same table as Ana Marquez and Rory Young. On a three-way turn of {7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, Marquez checked in the big blind and so did the player from under the gun. Michaelis in early position bet 2,600 and Marquez was the only caller.

The {5-Hearts} appeared on the river and both opted to check. Marquez showed the {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for two pair and Michaelis mucked. "You had diamonds? I was calling for the diamonds," the Spaniard added while raking in the pot with a big smile on the face.

WSOP Final Tablist Jack Sinclair Joins the Field

Jack Sinclair

2017 was a breakout year for Jack Sinclair; finishing eighth in the WSOP Main Event, and following it up by winning the €25,000 German Poker Championships Super High Roller.

And after a deep run in the PCA, Sinclair is now in Melbourne for his first taste of the Aussie Millions.

"2018 has started well for me," said Sinclair. "PCA was a lot of fun, and having already cashed in my first event here at the Aussie Millions is very encouraging!"

"Melbourne is a great place to be, especially in January, as it is usually pretty depressing in Europe right around now. The people here are outrageously friendly, being a Brit it is was initially a little disconcerting having so many strangers talk to me, but I am getting used to it. "

Sinclair said that everyone he had asked said that the Aussie Millions is one of their favourite stops on the tour, and it was one that he himself was excited for.

"The actual poker here is incredible, not like anywhere else. It seems like Australia has been isolated from the rest of the poker world for some time, they have a lot of crazy rules, and the Aussies play a very unconventional style. At the same time, it feels a lot like Vegas in the summer, which may possibly be due to the heat, but there is a real sense of excitement & grandeur surrounding the series."

And what does the future hold for the Brit after such a successful 2017?

"My short, medium & long term goal is always the same: trophies. I don't set financial goals for poker, and if I do they are very modest. I just want to make enough to keep playing. My only concern is getting better... and winning trophies for the glory!"

Saout Decimates Owen's Stack

Adam Owen took a big pot off Antoine Saout, calling a river bet of about 9,000 with {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} in a button-versus-blind battle with {5-Spades}{k-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Spades}{9-Hearts} on the board.

The next hand, Owen opened for 500 in the cutoff and Saout made it 1,600 in the small blind. Owen peeled to see a {10-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop. He called 2,000. On the {5-Clubs} turn, he called another 3,100. The river was a {9-Hearts} and Saout piled in 17,650 most of his stack. Owen set him in for the last 7,000 or so and Saout splashed in calling chips since he had {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for the nuts. Owen showed {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}.

After about 30 seconds, he tossed in calling chips but sent his cards muckward when Muehloecker revealed {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}.

Picking up the action on the {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop, Adam Owen checked in the small blind and Antoine Saout bet 400, which Owen called. Shane Warne is no stranger to the poker tables both here in Melbourne and at the WSOP in Las Vegas, and he's taken a seat in Day 1b of the Aussie Millions.

Warne took over 1,000 international wickets (in Tests and One-Day Internationals) in an international career spanning 15 years. He also has just under USD$100,000 in lifetime cashes, the biggest of which coming here in Melbourne in a High Stakes A$10,000 event in 2010.

We got to his table on the turn, with the board reading {3-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{A-Spades} and Warne bet 1,150. His opponent raised to 3,300 and Warne quickly called. The {5-Spades} river went check-check and Warne tabled {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} to win the hand. Warne has lot a bit in the opening stages and currently sits at 23,000.
