Big Field Expected for Day 1c of the 2019 Aussie Millions Main Event

Tournament Room
Tournament Room

The third and final starting day of the 2019 Aussie Millions A$ 10,600 Main Event kicks off at 12.30 p.m. local time in the biggest casino complex of the Southern hemisphere and a very busy day at the tables of the Crown Casino poker room is expected. One year ago, the event created a record-attendance of 800 entries after the efforts of an extensive satellite schedule paid off and a new record may very well be set.

On Day 1a and 1b respectively, 165 and 268 players entered the tournament to create a field of 433 entries and 214 hopefuls have already punched their ticket for Day 2 on Wednesday, January 30th, 2019. For all those that busted, there is no opportunity to take another shot at the title in Australia's most important poker event of the year, as the Aussie Millions remains one of the few major events on the international poker circuit to remain as a freezeout.

With only very few chips in to the {J-Spades}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} flop - 1,100 apiece preflop to be precise - and Jongwon Yoon raised a 2,500 bet by Arthur Kalantzis to 7,000, Kalantzis reraised to 13,000. Yoon moved all in for well over 40,000 and Kalantzis gave it just some consideration before calling it off for more than 35,000.

The {8-Diamonds} turn gave Kalantzis some further outs, but the {7-Spades} river was a blank. Kahle Burns and Chin Wei Lim shook their heads in disbelief and once all was over, John Hagen joked "Merry Chrismas" to table neighbor Yoon.

Jiang Sends Hulme to the Rail

Sosia Jiang in the A$ 50,000 Challenge

Picking up the action on the {Q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop, Sosia Jiang in the under-the-gun position made it 1,600 to go and Andrew Hulme raised to 4,700. Jiang eyed the stack of her opponent and Hulme replied "I started the hand with 21,000", after which Jiang moved all in and received an instant call by Hulme.

Andrew Hulme: {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Sosia Jiang: {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}

The {A-Spades} turn instantly improved Jiang, leaving Hulme with just two outs, and the {J-Spades} river was a blank.

"Do you have more than me?" Hulme asked and Jiang nodded. By then, Joshua Abady returned to the table and added to the chatter. "Bet, raise and shove? Did it get in after the flop or turn?" he asked, then suggested some Kiwi-related headlines for the outcome of the hand.

With more than 450 satellite qualifiers, there was little doubt that the 2019 Aussie A$ 10,600 Millions Main Event wouldn't disappoint and a new record is looming as the 800-entry field of the previous edition is not far off in the dinner break on Day 1c. Thus far, 359 players entered the third and final starting day, which has created a field of 792 entries. The registration remains open for the remainder of the day and the first level of Day 2, and the team at the Crown Casino in Melbourne will very likely be able to confirm a new record attendance soon.

More than 50 players have already been eliminated in the first four levels of the day with such notables as Julien Martini, Jack O'Neill, Didier Guerin, Andrew Hulme, Victor Chong, Andras Nemeth, Kitty Kuo and Gautam Dhingra all among the casualties. Martini lasted all but half an hour when he spiked top set with a pair of aces only for Weiming Yu to send the Frenchman packing with the turned straight.

O'Neill ran with kings into aces and Nemeth was ousted by Ryan Otto, who flopped a full house with jacks. Hulme suffered a deadly blow when he got it in with top two pair against the top pair and top kicker of Sosia Jiang, who immediately improved to the superior two pair on the turn.

Among the big stacks heading into dinner are Korea's Jongwon Yoon (122,000), Ryan Otto (118,750), Tobias Ziegler (90,000), Farid Jattin (83,000) and Joni Joihnikimainen (75,000). All of them would bag an above-average stack at the end of level seven in the early morning hours if they were to keep up their momentum in the remaining three levels.

Defending Main Event champion Toby Lewis was busy taking down the A$ 50,000 Challenge on an unscheduled third day and soon after jumped into the Main Event to head into dinner slightly below the average stack. Further former Aussie Millions champions in contention also include Ami Barer and Shurane Vijayaram.
