Mack Mucks as Vrakas Takes the Pot

Niveau 23 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante

Georgios Vrakas opened the action with a raise to 50,000, drawing calls from Adrian Mack in the cutoff and Danut Chisu in the big blind.

The flop came 47A, and Vrakas continued with a bet of 55,000, which Mack called while Chisu folded.

On the 9 turn, Vrakas checked, and Mack seized the opportunity with a bet of 135,000. After some deliberation, Vrakas made the call.

The river delivered the 6, and Vrakas led out for 80,000. Mack snap-called, but Vrakas revealed K9 for a pair of nines with a king kicker. Mack, unable to beat it, sent his cards to the muck as Vrakas claimed the pot.

The road to PokerStars European Poker Tour glory always has plenty of twists and turns, and the record-breaking 2023 EPT €5,300 Prague Main Event was no exception.

Jon Kyte, who had led the tournament from Day 3, entered the finale with 229 big blinds and a historic chip lead, one that was assumed to be unassailable. Padraig O'Neill had other ideas and was unexpectedly awarded the final EPT Trophy of the 2023 season after overcoming the Norwegian in heads-up play.

Known affectionately as "Smidge" in the Irish poker community, O'Neill came into the day as the shortest stack and turned his 12 big blinds into a €1,030,000 payout. With the victory, he became Ireland's second-ever EPT Main Event champion, 11 years after Steve O'Dwyer reigned supreme in Monte Carlo.

Oberlieben Left Short-Stacked By Donato

Ken Oberlieben
Ken Oberlieben

Carmelo Donato opened to 50,000 from the button and Ken Oberlieben called from the big blind.

They went to a flop of A44 where Oberlieben checked and Donato fired 35,000. Oberlieben then raised to 125,000, and Donato stuck around with a call.

A J dropped on the turn and Oberlieben continued to show aggression with a bet of 140,000, and again, Donato called.

When the 2 completed the board on the river, both players checked it down with Oberlieben showing J9 for a pair of jacks and a busted flush draw. Donato, however, had the winner with AK as he paired his ace, which left Oberlieben very short stacked.

Luka Sorainen

The action folded to Luka Sorainen in the small blind, and he limped in, prompting Dimitrios Gkatzas to check his option in the big blind.

The flop came 9109, and Sorainen led out for 25,000. Gkatzas responded with a raise to 80,000, and Sorainen made the call.

The 6 landed on the turn, and after Sorainen checked, Gkatzas moved all-in. With a stack of around 400,000, Sorainen snap-called.

Luka Sorainen: 87

Gkatzas had flopped trips, but Sorainen's turned straight put him in a prime position for a double-up. However, the river still held potential drama, and it delivered as the 4 gave Gkatzas a full house. An unfortunate river for Sorainen, whose tournament run ended in 30th.

Kapeller Knows How to Play Pocket Jacks

Niveau 23 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Siegfried Kapeller
Siegfried Kapeller

Siegfried Kapeller opened to 50,000 from the hijack and Umberto Ruggeri called from the button.

They saw a flop of QQJ where Kapeller continued with a bet of 30,000, and Ruggeri raised to 145,000. After thinking for a while, Kapeller called.

A K on the turn saw Kapeller check it over to his opponent, who put out a small bet of 90,000. Kapeller burned through a timebank before he called.

When the 5 dropped on the river, Kapeller checked again and Ruggeri counted out his chips before he elected to knuckle back.

"He has to show first, right?" asked Kapeller, who was quickly corrected by the dealer as he was out of position, he needed to show first. Kapeller then threw over a full house with JJ, and Ruggeri's cards went into the muck.
