The Marrakech Poker Open Main Event Gets Underway

Welcome to the Casino de Marrakech for the latest installment of the Marrakech Poker Open. Last year this event garnered 220 entrants, with 27 of them making the money. The winner, after a heads-up deal, was Portuguese pro Henrique Pinho who took home €35,800 for his efforts.

The Marrakech Poker Open got underway earlier this week, and has already seen stellar numbers fo its deep stack and bounty events, as well as the High Roller. In fact, the High Roller is still as yet unfinished. The three remaining players Fadhil Farag, Said El Yousfi and Phu Truong will reconvene after the conclusion of the Main Event today to settle the result there. Be sure to check out our live updates from yesterday's play as we wait for Day 1 of the Main Event to get well and truly underway.

Tournament officials have announced that there will be nine levels of 45 minutes today, with no dinner break, meaning there will be a slightly shorter day than many expected. Stay tuned to PokerNews for all the updates throughout the day.

Slow Start but Players Sure to Trickle In

Play was scheduled to get underway at 13.00 local time here in Marrakech, but despite Barny Boatman making an early appearance the tournament clock says that just nine players are registered. It looks like tournament officials will hold off starting the tournament until there are a few more players in the building.

"The early bird catches the worm," we remarked to a passing Boatman.

"The early bird is the first to rebuy," replied the Brit with a smile.

Both players checked the river which was the {8-Spades}. Andrade showed {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a two pair, but Haroune held {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for a higher two pair, and scooped the pot midway through the first level of the day.

Javier Garcirreynaldos Barral vs Achille Voltolina

Niveau 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Achille Voltolina limped from middle position before Javier Garcirreynaldos Barral raised to 500. The big blind called, as did Voltolina. The flop came {j-Spades}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. It checked to Barral, also known as Tsunamy, who bet 1,025. The small blind then raised to 2,625, and both his opponents called.

The turn was the {k-Diamonds}. It checked to Barral again who bet 4,500. This time the small blind elected to fold and Voltolina called.

The river was the {5-Hearts}. Voltolina checked to Barral for a third time who moved all in for around 21,000. With around 15 minutes left of the first level of the day, this was a huge shove, and it got through with Voltolina eventually relinquishing his hand. It remains to be seen whether Tsunamy's early pressure will pay off.

Numbers Soaring

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

From nine players when play should have started, to 45 by the end of level two the Main Event is really starting to get going. Entry and re-entry is open until the start of Day 2 so we should expect to see a lot more players join the fray.
