Life Outside Poker: Eugene Katchalov Returns to Both Ukraine and Poker

Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.

In the 19th episode, Connor speaks with former poker pro Eugene Katchalov, one of Ukraine's all-time money leaders who fled the country in 2022 after Russia's invasion and has since returned to the war-torn region with his family.

Katchalov, a former PokerStars ambassador, talked about growing up in New York City, his poker glory days and 2007 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic victory for $2.5 million, returning to Ukraine and misconceptions about the longstanding conflict with Russia. He also discussed his venture into esports and new plans to get back into poker with a project aimed at leveling the playing field between pros and recreationals.

Madsen, Affleck Chop a Big One

Masato Yokosawa raised to 100,000 in the hijack and Jeff Madsen called in the cutoff.

Yokosawa checked the J♦8♦K♦ flop, then called when Madsen bet 85,000. Yokosawa checked again on the 3♣ turn and Madsen bet another 180,000. Yokosawa quickly folded.

The next hand, Matt Affleck opened to 100,000 under the gun and Madsen called in the hijack, as did David "ODB" Baker in the big blind.

All three players checked the A♥9♣4♠ flop. Madsen then bet 135,000 on the 4♥ turn and only Affleck called.

The river was the 4♣ and Affleck led out for 180,000. Madsen then raised to 450,000 and Affleck quickly called.

Madsen showed A♠K♠ for a full house, while Affleck had A♣7♣ for the same full house to chop the pot.

Matthew Wantman raised to 100,000 under the gun with 7♠7♥ and Nick Marchington called in the big blind with 6♠5♠.

Wantman continued for 65,000 on the K♦6♣6♥ flop and Marchington raised to 180,000. Wantman called and both players checked the 6♦ turn.

The river was the 4♦ and Marchington slid forward his entire stack of 2,010,000. Wantman had 1,810,000 remaining and gave up his hand as Marchington took the pot.

Konnikova was in bad shape against Micka's queens and it stayed that way on the Q♦4♥2♥ flop as Micka made a set. The 9♥ on the turn gave Konnikova an open-ender but the 6♥ river bricked out as the PokerStars ambassador hit the rail in 14th place.
