Sergio Aido
Sergio Aido

Expect to see a number of high rollers enter this field on Day 1a at the PokerStars Championship Bahamas Main Event. That's because there's a $25,000 Single-Day High Roller on the schedule for tomorrow during Day 1b, incentivizing these players to fire during Day 1a.

Some of them have begun to trickle in already, including Spaniard Sergio Aido. Aido has been on fire since the beginning of November, putting together a string of big cashes, including a career-best $1,337,019 for a runner-up finish at Triton Super High Roller Series in February.

Here are some of his other big results in recent months:

  • Won HK$100,000 High Roller at Macau Poker Cup 26 for $267,302
  • Second in €10,300 High Roller at EPT Prague for €177,965
  • Third in HK$500,000 Main Event at Triton Super High Roller Series for $848,557

Aido will be a player to watch as this Main Event unfolds.

Life According to Garg

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Jose Da Silva Paulo Demeyere opened for 400 under the gun and Lokesh Garg three-bet to 1,100 from the cutoff. Paul Newey, who just entered the field, came along from the small blind and Kenny Hallaert did the same from the big. Demeyere put in the additional 700 and four players took a flop of {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}.

Three checks saw Garg fire out 2,500, both Newey and Hallaert folded, and Demeyere called to see the {K-Spades} turn.

Demeyere checked and Garg bet again, this time 6,700. That did the trick as Demeyere gave it up.

Roman Korenev Fires All Streets

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Roman Korenev raised to 400 from under the gun and was called by the player in the cutoff and Justin Bonomo on the button.

The flop came {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. Korenev led out for 600 and the cutoff called, while Bonomo folded.

The turn was the {4-Hearts}. Korenev quickly fired out a bet of 1,750. His opponent thought for a moment and decided to call.

The river was the {10-Diamonds} and Korenev thought about it for a moment, bopping his head as if he wear listening to music, with no headphones in sight. After about a minute, Korenev bet 3,300. The cutoff quickly folded, sending the pot Korenev's way.

Ortiz and Hallaert Tangle

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Kenny Hallaert, first to act, raised to 400 and his neighbor called before Tito Ortiz squeezed to 1,000. The button and small blind both cold called and big blind Paul Newey folded. With the action back on him, Hallaert resqueezed to 3,500. Everyone but Ortiz folded so it was heads up to the flop.

{Q-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

Hallaert and Ortiz both checked and the {A-Spades} on the turn was seen for free. Hallaert bet 4,000 and Ortiz called.

The {J-Diamonds} on the river made for a four flush on board and Hallaert checked. Ortiz followed suit and it was time for them to show their cards. Hallaert tabled {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} but had to forfeit the pot to Ortiz who showed {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for the rivered set.

Two hands later, the two would tangle again. This time Ortiz raised from first position and small blind Kenny Hallaert and the big blind both called. Hallaert bet out 300 on {3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Hearts} and the big blind and Ortiz called. Hallaert bet another 800 on the {8-Diamonds} turn and the big blind folded, Ortiz raised to 1,600 and Hallaert called. The {3-Spades} completed the board and Hallaert check-folded to Ortiz's 2,000 bet.

November Niner Hallaert had exactly 20,000 left after the two hands, Ortiz up to over 40,000.

Aido Wins Without Showdown

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Sergio Aido raised under the gun and the big blind was the sole caller. Both checked the {J-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{7-Hearts} flop before the big blind check-called 600 on the {8-Clubs} turn. The {5-Diamonds} river saw the big blind lead out for 1,100. Aido called and his neighbor mucked. Aido did so too, but did receive the pot.

Roman Korenev Straightens Out

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Action folded around to Justin Bonomo in the hijack and he announced a raise to 375. The player in the cutoff called, as did the button and Roman Korenev in the small blind.

The flop came {k-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and both Korenev and Bonomo checked. The cutoff bet 1,200 and saw calls from both Korenev and Bonomo.

The turn was the {q-Clubs}. All three players checked.

The river was the {a-Clubs}. All three players checked yet again, and Korenev tabled {q-Spades}{j-Diamonds} for broadway, sending the chips his way.

Big One for Haxton

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Isaac Haxton was in the small blind and bet 4,000, more than the size of the pot on a board of {3-Spades}{k-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. His under-the-gun opponent cut out the chips, thought awhile and tossed them in with a flourish. Haxton took awhile before firing 10,000 more on the {a-Clubs} river and got a snap-call.

Haxton showed pocket threes for a set and scooped the pot with a boat.

An Orbit w/ UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz

Niveau 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Tito Ortiz at the PokerStars Championship Bahamas
Tito Ortiz at the PokerStars Championship Bahamas

Back in January, Tito Ortiz retired from his storied MMA career after his first-round finish of Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170. Today, Ortiz is sporting a t-shirt remembering that day with #FinalFight.

Not everyone can go a full round with the MMA legend, but we just did. We spent one orbit observing Ortiz, who was sitting with 43,000 seven handed.

Hand #1 (Button): Paul Newey raised to 400 from middle position and Ortiz called. Lokesh Garg came along from the big blind and three players took a flop of {7-Clubs}{a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}. Both Garg and Newey checked, and that prompted Ortiz to bet 1,000. Only Newey called and the both players checked the {4-Hearts} turn.

When the {J-Hearts} completed the board on the river, action again went check-check and Ortiz tabled the {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a pair of queens. It was no good though as Newey had aces with his {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}.

Hand #2 (Cutoff): Ortiz raised to 300 and Lokesh called from the small blind. Luke Graham came along from the big and it was three-way action to the flop, which came down {2-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}.

Two checks opened the door for Ortiz to continue for 500, and only Lokesh called to see the {K-Spades} turn. Both players checked and then Lokesh check-folded to a bet of 2,000 on the {8-Clubs} river.

Hand #3 (Hijack): A player in early position raised to 400 and Ortiz folded.

Hand #4 (Lojack): Action folded to Ortiz and he released his hand.

Hand #5 (Under the Gun): Ortiz folded.

Hand 6 (Big Blind): The player in the hijack raised to 300, Jose Da Silva Paulo Demeyere called from the small blind, and Ortiz folded from the big.

Hand #7 (Small Blind): Newey raised to 400 from the hijack and Ortiz folded.
