Volpi was ahead in a race, and remained so after the 9♣5♥J♣ flop and J♦ turn. However the A♣ rolled off on the river to give Pieruzzini a pair of aces and send Volpi to the exits.
There has been some controversy here at Table 12.
Dario Pieruzzini had K♠K♥ and was all-in for around 75,000 and at risk versus Giorgio Soceanu who held A♦J♣.
The runout came 9♠6♠10♣7♥A♣, Soceanu thinking he had won the pot with a rivered pair of aces. However it became apparent that the dealer had, after exposing a card pre-flop, not used that card as the first burn card, and then mistakenly burned again.
The tournament director was called, the board was reconstituted and no ace appeared, with Pieruzzini taking the pot.
Soceanu was understandably furious with the turn of events, and much animated discussion in Italian took place, but he had little choice but to accept the position.
