Tripodi Leads Last 36 of Day 1a; Polito, Cardyn and Moolhuizen Advance to Day 2

Niveau 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Clement Tripodi Leads After Day 1a
Clement Tripodi Leads After Day 1a

The 2018 Unibet Open London £990 Main Event is off to a good start after 147 players took to the tables of the iconic Grosvenor Victoria Casino in the heart of London on the first of two starting days. After 11 levels of 60 minutes each, only 36 players bagged up at "The Vic" and Clement Tripodi claimed the overnight spotlight with a stack of 275,000.

Second in chips after Day 1a is Bhavin Khatri with 249,000 followed by Denmark's Peter Kaae (226,500). Khatri finished 2nd in this very event in 2016 and 5th in 2017 for £42,500 and £17,720 respectively. Other big stacks and notables that bagged up include Laurent Polito (223,500), Lorenc Boci (203,000), Nicolas Cardyn (140,000), Jeremy Pantin (106,500), two-time Unibet Open champion Mateusz Moolhuizen (79,000), Hendon Mob co-founder Joe Beevers (59,000), Sylvain Loosli (59,000,) and Benjamin Morrison (57,500).

Team Unibet Poker saw two players advance in ambassador Espen Uhlen Jorstad (144,500) and eSports Star Philip "syrinxx" Schoenebaum (76,500), while most of their team mates were dispatched throughout the day. Alan "Hotted89" Widmann ran with queen-jack into queens, Dara O'Kearney failed to crack aces and Jeffrey Brusi's open-ended straight draw with ace-six ended up second best to the overpair of Polito in the final level of the night.

Prior to that, Sophia "Djarii" White, Scott "Sco" McMillan, David Lappin, Fredrik Bergmann, two-time Unibet Open champion and Unibet Poker ambassador Dan Murariu as well as Colin "Koolein" Wijnholds all failed to run up a stack.

Other notable casualties on Day 1a were Antoine Saout, Ross Boatman, Benjamin Philipps, 2017 Unibet Open Bucharest third-place finisher Pavao Veza, Katie Swift, Bojan Zidar, Adrien Allain, Vincent Gabel, Benjamin Philipps and defending champion [Removed:158]. The dreams of back-to-back victories in London ended for the Belgian in level 10 and it was a simple flip that went wrong. Van Lancker's pocket jacks were ahead against the ace-king of Peter Kaae, but the Dane spiked a fourth spade on the river to improve to a flush.

While the Main Event was in full swing, the £2,200 High Roller saw more than 40 players return to the tables and the registration was open for the first level of Day 2. A field of 78 entries emerged to create a prize pool of £156,000 and the top 11 spots were paid. Neophytos Neophtou ended up as the bubble boy after ending up second-best with his ace-five against the pocket queens of Ivan Deyra.

Among those to cash were Catherine Ivgy, Giuseppe Zarbo, Christopher Yong, Rauno Kiviloo and Morten Mortensen. Ivan Deyra and Julien Sitbon cut a deal in heads up, leaving the trophy and £4,500 up for grabs and it would only take 15 minutes for the two Frenchmen to get their stacks in. Deyra was at risk with {A-Hearts}{8-Clubs} and Sitbon looked him up with {A-Spades}{J-Spades}. Despite flopping best on {K-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Spades}, Deyra was left drawing dead on the {2-Spades} turn and the {6-Spades} river was a formality. Sitbon, who won the 2015 Unibet Open Cannes Main Event for €80,000, added a second trophy of the popular live circuit to his collection.

Polito Brushes Off Brusi

Niveau 11 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Jeffrey "Sjow" Brusi
Jeffrey "Sjow" Brusi

After defending his big blind against the under-the-gun raise of Laurent Polito, Jeffrey "Sjow" Brusi bet the {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} flop and Laurent Polito raised, Brusi made it 17,000 to go and called the shove of Polito for what appeared to be 35,000 in total.

Jeffrey Brusi: {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Laurent Polito: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

Brusi had any ace, four or nine as outs in order to double. However, both the {2-Clubs} turn and {K-Spades} river were blanks and Brusi was sent to the rail in the final level of the night.

Vuoksenmaa and Bacri Eliminated

Niveau 10 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Jorma Vuoksenmaa
Jorma Vuoksenmaa

Clement Tripodi raised to 4,000 and was called by Jorma Vuoksenmaa and Tobias Andersen in the blinds. On the {9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop, the action checked to Tripodi and he continued for 5,500. Vuoksenmaa check-raised all in for 31,500 and that forced a quick fold from Andersen.

Tripodi asked for a count and was visibly unhappy, knowing the tight table image of Vuoksenmaa. However, the Frenchman did call and turned over {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for top pair. Vuoksenmaa had {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for a flush draw and the {6-Spades} turn and {4-Spades} river blanked off.

Soon after Guillaume Bacri departed from the same table. It was Andersen that raked in the pot and the Dane confirmed what happened. Jerome L'Hostis had raised to 5,000 and Andersen three-bet to 16,000 with pocket kings. Bacri four-bet all in for more than 50,000 with {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and L'Hostis folded, Andersen called.

Despite the {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{2-Clubs} flop that gave him a set, Andersen had a sweat due to Bacri's flush draw, but two blanks followed.

Jorstad Gets the Ball Rolling

Espen Uhlen Jorstad
Espen Uhlen Jorstad

On the three-way flop of {Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades}, Zoltan Boszormenyi bet 7,000 from early position and Espen Uhlen Jorstad called while the third player in the hand folded. The {10-Spades} paired the board on the turn and Boszormenyi made it 16,000 to go with about as much behind.

Jorstad, who currently lives in Hungary, asked to see the remaining chips of the Hungarian and then raised to more than 40,000 in order to give Boszormenyi just the option to call all in or fold. The latter was the final result and Jorstad claimed the pot to jump over six four times the starting stack.

Schoenebaum Sends Dunleavy to the Rail

Phil "syrinxx" Schoenebaum

The cards were all but rushed away as Michael Dunleavy exited the tournament area. Dunleave had three-bet shoved with queen-ten and Philip Schoenebaum instantly called with {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}. The {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{J-Clubs} flop left Dunleavy drawing to running queens, and he was drawing dead as soon as the {4-Diamonds} fell on the turn.

A blank {A-Diamonds} river was a mere formality and the pot was shipped to Schoenebaum.

Plomp and Veza Eliminated

Pavao Veza

Gordon Plomp was spotted while leaving his table and the Belgian, who had qualified for this event in one of the first Satellites on Unibet Poker, had gotten it in for nine big blinds with {A-}{6-}. Another similar short-stacked player had the {A-}{K-} and a king on the flop all but sealed Plomp's fate.

Pavao Veza, who finished third in the Unibet Open Bucharest back in December 2017, was also among those to bust. He three-bet all in with king-queen and initial raiser Markus Heikkila called with ace-queen to immediately spike an ace on the flop.

Moolhuizen Triples; Murariu Out

Niveau 6 : 400/800, 100 ante
Mateusz Moolhuizen
Mateusz Moolhuizen

Janice Phillips raised to 3,000 and Mirjan Hykaj called from one seat over. Mateusz Moolhuizen in the blinds gave it a long thought and moved all in for his last 9,000, which Phillips called. Hykaj moved all in over the top and Phillips folded.

Mateusz Moolhuizen: {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Mirjan Hykaj: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {A-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{K-Hearts} and Moolhuizen flopped an ace, then rivered the nut flush to secure the triple up. Fellow two time Unibet Open champion and Unibet ambassador Dan Murariu was less fortunate. He got chipped down over the past few hours and lost his last 15 big blinds with {A-}{J-} against {Q-}{10-}.

Sallinen Busts to Cardyn

Niveau 6 : 400/800, 100 ante
Nicolas Cardyn
Nicolas Cardyn

In a hand that lasted well over eight minutes into the new level, Pasi Sallinen three-bet a raise of Nicolas Cardyn from 1,500 to 4,200 out of the small blind and Cardyn called. The flop of {10-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds} brought a continuation bet of 5,100 by Sallinen and Cardyn came along to see the {8-Diamonds} on the turn.

Now Sallinen checked and faced a bet of 6,300 by Cardyn, which he called after spending three minutes in the think tank. With some 13,000 behind, Sallinen checked the {8-Hearts} river and Cardyn bet 20,000. Another 90 seconds of consideration followed and Sallinen called all in with pocket kings, but was no good as Cardyn flipped over {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts} for a straight.

From under the gun, Dmitrii Prusov raised to 1,500 and picked up one caller in Benjamin Morrison. The latter called a continuation bet on the {A-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop and did so again for {9-Hearts} turn to create a pot of around 13,000. Prusov checked the {Q-Spades} river and Morrison moved all in, Prusov called for the size of the pot and was shown {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a straight by Morrison.

Prusov mucked {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} face up and quickly left the tournament area.

The excellent start of Asif Warris has vanished and the Brit suddenly sits on a mere 10 big blinds while Mohammed Suhail in the last seat was all smiles and explained what happened. According to Suhail, he faced a raise to 900 and a call, which he called as well. Warris three-bet big to 5,100 and Suhail was the only caller with {J-Spades}{10-Spades} to flop the nut straight. Warris got it in with top set and failed to improve.
