Monster Day 1B Field Expected in Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event

After 389 players entered the 2017 Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event yesterday, a whole lot more are expected to enter today, pushing the total number of entrants ever closer to the 1,000 mark.

Last year 987 players entered the Main Event, and with yesterday's figure already 46 more than at the same stage last year, it appears that the 1,000 player mark is well within their sights.

Players will receive 50,000 chips and will have 14 40-minute levels to try and get as close as possible to Day 1A chip leader and Team Winamax Pro Bruno Lopes' mark of 803,000.

Here is the structure for the day. There will be 20-minute breaks after levels 3, 6 and 11 and a 75-minute dinner break taken after level 8.

A short while ago French singer, actor and member of Team Winamax Pro Patrick Bruel announced "Shuffle up and deal!" and Day 1B of the 2017 Winamax Poker Open Dublin Main Event got under way.

Before he took to the microphone, and in between taking selfies with fans, we spoke to him and he said that he was happy to be here.

"I'm very happy; very happy to see that this tournament is getting bigger. This new venue...it reminds me of the big poker rooms of Las Vegas or California.

"It's my first time [at the Winamax Poker Open Dublin]; in eight years this is my first time. Everyone told me that I should come. Everybody wants to take part in this tournament."

Bruel gestured to fellow Team Winamax Pro Davidi Kitai who was stood a few metres away from him.

"Some of us are used to playing in bigger tournaments than this, but that's not the reason why we come. This tournament is about having fun and being together. That's the point of this tournament!"

Niveau 1 : 100/200, 25 ante

Eamon Connolly raised to 500 from the cutoff and Emmett Mullin three-bet to 1,500 from the big blind. Connolly four-bet to 3,500 and Mullin five-bet to 10,000. Connolly flat-called.

The flop came {3-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}. Mullin checked to Connolly who bet 8,000. Mullin check-raised all around 40,000 and Connolly called.

Eamon Connolly: {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Emmett Mullin: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}

It was a dream flop for Connolly, but an even better one for Mullin who held pocket Aces. The turn was the {j-Clubs} and the river the {j-Diamonds} meaning Connolly was eliminated and Mullin became one of the first players to reach the fabled 100,000 mark.

The 2017 Main Event might only be in its second day, but the Winamax Poker Open here in Dublin is in its eighth year, so we thought we would speak to some of those who have been here year on year, and ask them what makes this tournament so exciting to be a part of.

Benjo Gallen - Head of Editorial Content for Winamax

This tournament has been running for seven years, so we have managed to build up quite a following. There are so many players who come here with their friends, and some of their friends come here even though they don't play poker!

The tournament has this real sense of family. It's like a children's activity camp, but for adults. We also have a venue that is understanding about us doing crazy things like Beer Pong and loud tournaments.

That's what I love about it. It doesn't feel like work. Everybody is here just to have fun. It's not a serious tournament; we couldn't do stuff like this at a €5,000 poker tournament. Obviously, at the end of this week, someone could win €100,000, but it doesn't really feel like work.

Steven Bensimon - Live Reporter for ClubPoker

There are a lot of reasons as to why it's popular. Firstly it's in a 6-Max format; it's €500 so it's not very expensive; it's also not in a hotel!

You can also qualify online and lots of people do that. It's very easy to qualify online. If you bust you also have a lot of different side events or activities like karaoke, or pool or the Big Quiz which is happening tonight.

That means you can come here with your wife or girlfriend or friends, even if they don't play poker very well, but you can enjoy yourself and have fun. It's aimed at those sorts of people too, not just poker players.
