Harkin Snatches the Lead After Day 2 of Event #12: $1,500 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed; 15 Remain

Niveau 20 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

Jeremy Harkin emerged as the chip leader ahead of the final day of the $1,500 Dealer's Choice event which will see the last 15 players battle it out for the $129,882 first-place prize and the bracelet.

Harkin was seen handling a very promising stack throughout the day, but ultimately it was one particular hand that catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard. It happened 10-minutes before the close of play.

Harkin was sitting on a stacked table that also featured Mike Leah, John Hennigan and Chris Klodnicki. Harkin joined the three mixed game superstars in a pot of PLO and raised Klodnicki's bet after the flop to reduce the contest to heads-up.

Klodnicki then shoved all-in on the turn and Harkin snapped him off with the nuts, an eight-high straight. Klodnicki had flopped a set of fours and the river was a giant sweat for a 500,000-chip pot with Harkin's tournament life on the line. Harkin avoided a paired board and took a massive bite out of his neighbor's stack and will be bringing 502,500 in chips into the final day.

Klodnicki himself stormed through the day and looked to be chasing the overnight lead, but the unfortunate collision sent him to the bottom half of the chip counts.

The final day will also feature Chris Vitch and George Trigeorgis, two players who had to enter the Dealer's Choice event very late as they were busy battling for a bracelet on the final table of the Mixed Triple Draw on Monday.

Day 2 brought a fast-paced game flow as the field got halved in the first four levels of the day, bringing the tournament to the money bubble. It took 13 hands to find the unfortunate casualty, which happened to be Jason Gooch. Gooch was down to peanuts and couldn't come back in a three-way pot, bricking the board and losing to Andrey Zhigalov who hit a pair of nines.

Some of those who made it further than Gooch but were forced to depart during the close of Day 2 play were Mike Ross (21st for $4,219), Layne Flack (25th for $3,503), Jake Schwartz (31st for $3,002), Mike Sexton (37th for $2,657), John Monnette (46th for $2,432), Manig Loeser (57th for $2,263), Martin Staszko (58th for $2,263), and Allen Kessler (60th for $2,263).

The remaining 15 players are guaranteed to take home at least $5,238 but their current focus is surely aimed at the six figures up top.

Wednesday, 6 June, will see the champion arise as the Dealer's Choice continues at 2pm PST. PokerNews will be on the ground once again to provide live updates, guiding you throughout the search for the winner of one of the most complex poker events in the world.

Fricke Wins a Monster Pot

Pot-Limit 2-7 Triple Draw

"I'll let you guys torture each other," said short-stacked Mike Ross, selecting the new game.

And those proved to be prophetic words. On the very first hand, Sachin Bhargava raised to 10,500 in the cutoff, earning a call from Jimmy Fricke in the small blind.

Fricke took two and Bhargava changed one. Fricke check-called 20,000 and discarded one on the second draw. Bhargava patted and announced he was betting the pot, making it 64,000. Fricke thought he had fewer chips than that so only called and no bets were made on the last street.

Fricke patted and Bhargava was in trouble, changing his plan and broke a nine, drawing one.

Fricke turned up {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-} and Bhargava couldn't peel a better hand. The massive pot went Fricke's way who suddenly rocketed to 200,000.

Mike Ross raised and called Jimmy Fricke's three-bet. Fricke then barreled every street and Ross called all the way to the showdown. Fricke changed one on each occasion while Ross peeled two on the first two draws before discarding one on the last draw.

Fricke turned up {A-Clubs}{2-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for eight-low and six-dugi and scooped Ross in a big pot.

On the next hand, Ross was in the big blind, posting 3,900. Fricke raised the button and George Trigeorgis came along from the small blind. All changed three and no action for side pot followed. Trigeorgis drew three again while Ross and Fricke took two each.

Trigeorgis then drew one on the last draw with Ross and Fricke still discarding two. Trigeorgis bet and Fricke mucked.

"Pair of threes," Trigeorgis announced and Ross saw that he won the whole pot with his {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{7-Hearts}.

Allen Kessler Eliminated in 60th Place ($2,263)

Stud Hi-Lo

Sachin Bhargava completed to 2,000 and Allen Kessler made it 3,000. Yehuda Buchalter made it 4,000 and Bhargava folded as Kessler committed his last 1,300 and Buchalter called as each player's boards ran out as follows:

Kessler: {2-Clubs}{2-Spades} / {5-Spades}{7-Hearts}{A-Spades}{9-Diamonds} / {Q-Hearts}
Buchalter: {Q-Diamonds}{3-Spades} / {Q-Spades}{A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{9-Spades} / {10-Diamonds}

With Kessler bricking a low draw and having just a pair of deuces, it would be Buchalter scooping the pot with aces-up to eliminate Kessler in 60th place.

Gooch Can't Beat Pair of Nines in O8, Bubbles the $1,500 Dealer's Choice Event

Limit Omaha Hi-Lo

On the 13th hand on the stone bubble, Jeff Lisandro raised in the cutoff and Jason Gooch called for his last 2,900 on the button. Both Andrey Zhigalov and John Hennigan joined the contest out of the blinds.

The flop fell {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{10-Hearts}, eliminating low draws. Lisandro bet in position and Zhigalov called while Hennigan released his hand.

They checked the {9-Spades} turn and {6-Clubs} and a three-way showdown followed:

Jeff Lisandro: {8-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Andrey Zhigalov: {9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Jason Gooch: {A-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Spades}

Neither player made a strong hand but Zhigalov had a nine in his hand and that was enough to beat his two opponents. Good finished in 62nd place and became the last player to leave the tournament empty-handed.

John Hennigan Leads 112 Players Heading Into Day 2

Chip Leader John Hennigan
Chip Leader John Hennigan

Welcome back to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino and the 2018 World Series of Poker for Day 2 of Event #12: $1,500 Dealer's Choice 6-Handed!

Yesterday saw 406 entries in an altered version of this event compared to previous years as players were allowed one re-entry. Many players changed their style and gambled a little in the early going knowing they could fire a second bullet. As Day 1 played out Owais Ahmed, Maria Ho, Bryce Yockey, James Obst, Daniel Negreanu, Todd Brunson, and defending Champion David Bach were among those who saw their second bullet end like their first, with an elimination.

With players having 20 games to choose from, many of the pot-limit games would see chips fly between players. That was definitely the case for overall chip leader John Hennigan who benefited on one of the final hands of the day in an orbit of pot-limit Omaha. Hennigan flopped top set and check-raised on the turn. His opponent called, and when one of the straight cards filled in on the river, Hennigan check-called his opponent's big bet which ended up being a bluff.

Consequently, Hennigan managed to bag 89,800 and keep himself ahead of Andrey Zhigalov (85,275), Xunen Zheng (69,950), Luke Saltus (61,875), Joey Couden (59,325), and Jeff Lisandro (58,025).

With 112 players returning for Day 2 action, everyone left hopes to snag a piece of the $548,100 prize pool. Up top is the $129,882 first prize and coveted WSOP gold bracelet, but to get there players must first reach the money which sees the top 61 players guaranteed a $2,263 payday.

Play resumes on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. PDT with the PokerNews Live Reporting Team providing continuous live updates of all the Day 2 action. So stay tuned right here to catch every wheel, buried pair, and monstrous flop clash live from Event #12 and the 2018 WSOP!
