Hellmuth Moves On; Damjan Radanov Bags Day 1 Chip Lead in Opening H.O.R.S.E. Event

Niveau 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Damjan Radanov

Players were off to the races for Day 1 of Event #15: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. that saw a total of 731 runners walk through the doors at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. The games on tap were Limit Hold'em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Stud, and Stud Hi-Lo. With the game changing after every eight hands, players had a wide variety of poker variations to play.

Once late registration closed after eight levels of play, the prize pool information was announced. There is a total of $986,850 up for grabs with first place pocketing $202,787, in addition to the gold bracelet. There is still quite a bit of play left before the money bubble is reached with 110 places getting paid and a min-cash worth $2,254.

When the dust settled, there were just 217 players remaining at the end of ten 60-minute levels, with Damjan Radanov holding the chip lead after bagging up 98,600. Radanov, a poker player from Memphis, Tennessee, plays both no-limit hold'em and mixed game tournaments but prefers the latter. At the WSOP in 2017, Radanov cashed in three mixed game tournaments but is still looking for that elusive gold bracelet. He has over $530,000 in career tournament earnings and winning this event would mark his largest career cash.

Italy's Walter Treccarichi (77,800), and the USA's Manelic Minaya (72,300), Thomas Chung (64,700), and Connor Berkowitz (63,800) round out the top five stacks.

The day started with around 400 players and they continued to trickle in throughout the first eight levels. There were a few notable pros who found their way into a seat early on in the tournament and that list included Dzmitry Urbonavich, Dan Heimiller, Calen McNeill, and David Buch, who all ended up making early exits as well.

After the second break of the day, it was well-known grinder Brandon Shack-Harris who found his way to the top of the chip counts. Shack-Harris has two WSOP bracelets and looked determined to find his third during this event. Shack-Harris dropped off towards the end of the day, bagging 18,200. Other notables in the field with multiple bracelets included Brian Hastings, Phil Hellmuth, Barry Greenstein, Frank Kassela, John Hennigan, and even Phil Ivey made a short appearance.

Among those moving on to Day 2 are Aron Dermen (63,000), Ryan Laplante (41,800), Brian Hastings (40,800), Ismael Bojang (39,800), Scott Clements (39,800), and Phil Hellmuth (20,100).

Day 2 is scheduled to resume at 12pm, with blinds recommencing at level 11; Limit games start with 500/1,000 flop bets and big bets of 1,000/2,000; Stud games have a 300 bring in and a big blind of 1,000 with big bets of 1,000/2,000. There will be another ten levels scheduled for the day, with a winner being crowned on Day 3.

The PokerNews team will be bringing live reports during this and every other WSOP event this summer.

Ismael Bojang opened from early position and the small blind called. Phil Ivey called as well from the big blind and the flop came {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{a-Spades}. All three players checked and the turn fell the {j-Spades}.

The small blind led and Ivey made the call. Bojang raised and the small blind opponent called. Ivey made the call as well and the river fell the {8-Spades}.

Action checked to Bojang who then bet and action folded back to Ivey who made the call. Bojang flipped over {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for a turned set and Ivey then chucked his cards into the muck.

Chris McHugh: {x-}{x-} / {4-}{8-}{3-}

Phil Hellmuth limped in with a four showing and the action folded to Chris McHugh who completed also with a four showing. Hellmuth called and the two players continued heads-up. McHugh bet fourth and Hellmuth called. McHugh bet fifth and Hellmuth folded after a bad runout of cards, flashing {a-}{3-} in the process.

"Look at this," Hellmuth expressed his disappointment.

"I would have folded if you would have raised earlier," McHugh explained.

"That's why I'm the all-time greatest razz player," Hellmuth boasted with a straight face.

Omaha Hi-Lo

The board read {10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Brandon Shack-Harris in the button was check-called by the cutoff. The turn came the {2-Spades} and Shack-Harris was check-called again by the cutoff.

The river fell the {10-Diamonds} and the cutoff opponent bet, Shack-harris raised and his opponent then raised again. Shack-Harris thought for a moment before making the call and his opponent then tabled {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts} for two pair. Shack-Harris then tabled {a-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for three of a kind, which was enough to take down the hand.

Hold'em

Iraj Parvizi just recently took a seat and has quickly accumulated a vast amount of chips. After a limp from the hijack, Hsiao Liu raised from the cutoff. Parvizi three-bet from the small blind and was called by both players. Parvizi checked blind before the flop of {k-Spades}{9-Hearts}{4-Clubs} hit the board and Liu was the first to bet. Parvizi called and the hijack folded.

The turn brought the {5-Diamonds} and Parvizi check-called again. The {5-Spades} paired the board on the river and both players tapped the table. Parvizi turned over {8-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} and Liu mucked her hand.

In the next hand, Parvizi and the small blind capped the action preflop. On a board of {j-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}, the small blind check-called a bet from Parvizi on every street only to see Parvizi table {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for a set of sevens.

Barber began with a bet on fourth street and was called by both of his opponents. On fifth, the action was checked to the third player who bet and both Barber and Pfluger called.

Pfluger had the lead on sixth and led out but was called by both players. After everyone took turns betting on different streets, it was time for seventh street. The action checked to Barber who squeezed his last card and then tossed in a bet. Both of his opponents threw their cards to the muck and Barber raked in the pot.

Another day and another mixed game event is ready to start inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino for the 2018 World Series of Poker. Today marks the opening day of Event #15: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E., the first of three H.O.R.S.E. events on tap for the summer. It will be followed by the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. event starting on June 12 and the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event on July 12 to cap off the "Triple Crown" of the series.

Last year's champion David Singer will likely be back to defend his title run when he outlasted 736 entrants and took home the first-place prize of $203,709. It was Singer's second WSOP gold bracelet, his first coming back in 2008. He managed to defeat other multiple bracelet winners on the final day including Max Pescatori, Brandon Shack-Harris, Ian Johns, Richard Ashby, James Richburg, and David "Bakes" Baker.

The action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PDT at which point players will take their seat with 7,500 chips. The blind levels will be 60-minutes in length with a total of 10 levels on tap for Day 1. There will be a 20-minute break after every two levels and a 75-minute dinner break after Level 6 (~5:40 p.m.). Late registration will remain open for eight levels (~9:15 p.m.) but there will be no re-entries available for those eliminated early on.
