The Race to the Final Table on Day 3 of Event #42: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller

Jason Koon continues his great year with a cash in this event
Jason Koon continues his great year with a cash in this event

After an excruciating money bubble last night, the total field of 230 entries in Event #42: $25,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed High Roller has been whittled down all the way to just 35 hopefuls, all guaranteed a portion of the massive $5,462,500 prize pool. A min-cash of $37,500 is locked up for all those that bagged up chips in the early morning hours, while the eventual champion on Saturday can look forward to a payday of $1,402,683 and the coveted gold bracelet.

In prime position to earn that prize is two-time WSOP bracelet winner Ben Yu, who ran very hot after the dinner break on Day 2 to bag 3,695,000.

The remaining top five stacks all belong to big names in Jason Koon (2,540,000), Ryan Tosoc (2,220,000), Shaun Deeb (2,120,000) and Scotty Nguyen (2,010,000). Koon may not have a bracelet to his name yet, but he is enjoying an excellent year thus far. The High Roller regular has earned six six-figure and three seven-figure scores already to boost his total cashes on the live circuit to more than $20 million.

Other notables still in contention in a field filled with some of the biggest names on the international poker circuit include the WSOP bracelet winners Jason Mercier (1,905,000), Luis Velador (1,045,000), David Prociak (1,020,000), Robert Mizrachi (1,005,000), Erik Seidel (725,000), defending champion James Calderaro (705,000), Mike Leah (660,000), Craig Varnell (625,000), Christopher Frank (565,000), David Benyamine (425,000), Sam Soverel (380,000), Paul Volpe (370,000), and Jarred Graham (300,000)..

A total of 10 levels of 60 minutes each are scheduled for the penultimate day of the tournament with a break every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after the sixth level. The action is expected to shift into high gear right from the bat as several players have been left extremely short stacked by the prolonged bubble phase, Level 21 will resume with blinds of 15,000/30,000.

As always, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on hand to provide live updates on all of the action, and when three tables remain, the action will be live streamed on PokerGO.

Kalb and Graham Depart

Niveau 21 : 15,000/30,000, 0 ante
Jacob Kalb
Jacob Kalb

The second casualty of the day was Jacob Kalb after he min-raised and picked up a call by George Wolff in the big blind. On the flop of {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{4-Hearts}, the stacks of both collided and Kalb was the player at risk with the {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{X-}. Wolff had the {Q-Spades}{10-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds} for the middle set and a gutshot, and the board completed with the {6-Clubs} turn and the {4-Clubs} river, which ended Kalb's run in 34th place.

Right after that, Jarred Graham departed when he ended up flopping top pair only for Mike Leah to turn a set of eights, leaving Graham drawing dead.

Erik Seidel raised on the button and called the three-bet of Luis Velador out of the small blind. Velador bet the pot on the {6-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop and Seidel moved all in, Velador called.

Erik Seidel: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Luis Velador: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{7-Clubs}

The {A-Spades} turn left Seidel with just the hearts flush draw as outs, and the {5-Clubs} river was a blank to eliminate Seidel in 26th place.

Jonathan Depa opened under the gun for 80,000 and Ryan Tosoc in the hijack called. In the cutoff, Mike Leah potted for 365,000. The blinds got out of the way and so did Depa. Tosoc opted to call and see a flop.

On a {6-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop, Tosoc bet pot to put Leah all in. Leah, with 295,000 behind, tanked for a while before he called.

Ryan Tosoc: {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}
Mike Leah: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}

The {3-Clubs} hit the turn and the {5-Diamonds} completed the board, making Tosoc the winning hand. Down and out for Leah.

In the first major hand over on the outer table, Sam Soverel raised with his short stack and Robert Mizrachi defended his big blind. The remaining chips went in after a flop of {J-Spades}{6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} and Soverel found himself drawing dead.

Sam Soverel: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Robert Mizrachi: {J-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

Mizrachi had flopped a full house and no cards in the deck could help Soverel, who headed to the rail in 24th place for $46,190.

Grazvydas Kontautas
Grazvydas Kontautas

Martin Kozlov opened to 65,000 in middle position and was called by Grazvydas Kontautas in the cutoff and David Benyamine on the button. Shaun Deeb three-bet to 355,000 from the small blind and both Kontautas and Benyamine called.

The flop came {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} and Deeb announced all in, enough to put both of his opponents at risk. Kontautas quickly called off his last 585,000 and Benyamine called for his remaining 175,000.

David Benyamine: {k-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Shaun Deeb: {a-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Grazvydas Kontautas: {10-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}

The turn was the {4-Hearts} and Deeb picked up a wrap to go with his top pair. However, the river brought the {q-Diamonds} and Benyamine made Broadway to triple up. Deeb, on the other hand, eliminated Kontautas with just a pair of aces.

Michael Song raised to 140,000 in the cutoff and Martin Kozlov called from the big blind. The flop came {j-Clubs}{8-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and Kozlov checked to Song who moved all in for his last 50,000. Kozlov called and the cards were tabled.

Martin Kozlov: {8-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Spades}
Michael Song: {q-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}

The {j-Diamonds} on the turn narrowed nearly all of Kozlov's outs, needing to only hit an off-suit six to win the pot. The dealer burned and turned the {6-Hearts} on the river and Kozlov hit exactly what he need to send Song home in 22nd place.

Under the gun plus one, George Wolff limped in for 40,000. His neighbor Jeffrey Palarino potted for 180,000 and the action quickly folded back to Wolff. He called to see a flop.

Wolff led out to put Palarino all in for the few chips he still had behind on {3-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}. Palarino called all in instantly.

Jeffrey Palarino: {9-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{K-Spades}{A-Spades}
George Wolff: {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

The {7-Spades} on the turn and {Q-Clubs} were cards in favor of Wolff as he made a straight to beat Palarino's two pair.

We missed the details but Jason Koon told us that David Prociak had gotten his chips in the middle before the flop with aces against the queens of Ryan Tosoc. The latter flopped top set and the turn and river didn't help Prociak anymore to go out just before the next redraw.

A short-stacked Omar Zazay opened to 120,000 under the gun and Konstantin Beylin potted on the button. Back to Zazay, he thought for a bit and eventually committed his remaining 280,000 chips.

Beylin: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Zazay: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{J-Spades}{10-Spades}

The board ran out {Q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}, and Beylin's kings up were good for the pot, and the elimination. Zazay takes 19th place for $46,190.
