Yockey Near the Chip Lead; Elezra, Negreanu and Hellmuth All Bag on Day 1

Niveau 10 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
Bryce Yockey
Bryce Yockey

When Bryce Yockey plays poker, he's sitting on a big stack. That almost became an axiom. Regardless of the buy-in and game, Yockey has been showcasing his versatility for several years and capped it off in 2017. He first made the Millionaire Maker final table and then topped it by claiming his first WSOP title in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo Championship.

Now wearing the bracelet winner badge, Yockey returned to the game that he conquered last year in the exclusive competition. This time, he's headlining the smaller buy-in version but the Event #53: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better attracted a large field of 935 entries. While it isn't easy to take the spotlight with that many tables in operation, Yockey still found a way to get a ton of attention and eventually parked in second place on the provisional leaderboard.

Yockey had a healthy stack through all our checkpoints, but his biggest surge came in the last level of the day. He was seen in a monster pot, battling against Stuart Rutter. With nearly 15,000 already lying in front of each player, Yockey check-shoved over Rutter's 14,000-bet with a high board featuring two queens. Rutter tanked for several minutes and his hand was eventually declared dead.

Yockey had almost 160,000 at that point which would surely lock him for the lead, but he gave up some of it before bagging and finished just shy of the lead with 131,900 as Brad Albrinck reported a 137,100-chip stack. Another player who impressed on Day 1 was Dustin Pattinson with 129,100.

There was another notable contender for the overnight pole position: three-time bracelet winner Eli Elezra. His story was similar to Yockey's as Elezra lost some of his chips towards the end of the day, settling for 102,600.

Eli Elezra
Eli Elezra had a strong showing on Day 1, bagging over a 100k

Among the 191 players who advanced through to Day 2 were both Phil Hellmuth (67,400) and Daniel Negreanu (81,100). Hellmuth managed to cruise through the field even though he was a target of Rutter's constant mocking, which escalated into a one-level penalty for the Englishman.

While there are still many notable players remaining, one of them stands out in particular: defending champion Nathan Gamble arrived at 11 a.m. for the first hand of the day and finished with 42,000, just above the tournament average. If Gamble pulls off a tremendous back-to-back winning story, he'd take home $244,370.

First things first, there is a bubble to burst before any considerations of potential champions as there are two more days to spend on the trail. But the touchstone of all events looms just around the corner as 141 players will take home pieces of the $1,262,250 prize pool.

Some of those who won't pick up a payout slip include Erik Seidel, Mike Wattel, Frank Kassela, Mike Leah and Scott Bohlman as they were all eliminated during the day.

The action recommences on Wednesday, June 27 at 12 p.m. so come back to follow the PokerNews live coverage of the popular four-card split-pot game.

Elezra Pushing for the Overnight Lead

Niveau 10 : 500/1,000, 0 ante
Eli Elezra
Eli Elezra

Eli Elezra has been guarding a huge stack for a while and he keeps adding to his piles in the last level. Elezra just seized another chunk in the following hand.

He was in the small blind, facing a raise to 3,500 from a short-stacked player in late position. Igor Sharaskin called on the button and Elezra came along.

The {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} flop saw Elezra check to the opener who moved all in for his last 500. Sharaskin and Elezra both called and they checked the {2-Clubs} turn and the {J-Spades} river.

Elezra announced ace-jack, turning up {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and neither of his opponents could beat that. Elezra moved up to 133,000 with the average stack showing just over 31,000 at the moment.

With around 40-minutes left to play on Day 1, Elezra is a hot contender for the overnight chip lead.

Ferguson Hits a Runner-Runner Flush to Scoop

Chris Ferguson was all in preflop and while the reigning WSOP Player of the Year had a very likable {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}, he was on the short side of the odds against {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

The {K-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} flop didn't look good for Ferguson but the {7-Hearts} turn gave him a flush draw. The dealer turned up the {10-Hearts} on the river to fill Ferguson's hand and his stack was counted at 10,025. His opponent was just short of that and shipped all of his chips Ferguson's way.

One for the Defending Champ

In a three-way pot, Nathan Gamble checked the {K-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} flop out of the small blind and the big blind checked as well. A bet of 2,100 followed from the button and only Gamble called.

The {9-Hearts} turn filled the open-ender from the flop and Gamble used it to take the betting lead. He fired 6,500 and that was enough to take it down. Gamble is now up to a solid 25,800.

ODB Eliminates One After Filling a Wrap

Niveau 3 : 75/150, 0 ante
David "ODB" Baker (as seen in a previous event)
David "ODB" Baker (as seen in a previous event)

David "ODB" Baker raised to 400 in the second position and found three callers including a player in the big blind.

The big blind led out 1,800 when the {7-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{J-Spades} flop landed and Baker was the only one to match the price.

The turn came {Q-Hearts} and Baker snap-called an all-in bet, quickly turning up {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for a Broadway straight. His opponent wanted to muck as he observed that he was drawing dead, but he had to show his hand to comply with the all-in rule. He opened {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{8-Spades}{6-Spades} for a flopped straight but the river card couldn't change his fate.

The knocked-out player left his seat while Baker is off to a great start, having almost quadrupled the starting stack already early in the third level.

Luske Solves the Problem

Niveau 2 : 50/100, 0 ante
Marcel Luske
Marcel Luske

Picking up the action on the {3-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} turn, Mike Matusow was leading out, firing 600 into 950 out of the big blind. Two seats further, Marcel Luske potted it.

"How much do you have there?" Matusow asked. Luske looked at his chips and sorted them by denomination.

"Actually, I have a problem here. I'm running out of chips," Luske analysed his stack. He had 5,200 total.

Matusow eventually threw in his full stack, covering Luske what look had left. Luske called right away, turning up {A-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs}.

Matusow didn't even expose his hand as he was apparently drawing dead. The {5-Clubs} river sealed the deal for Luske, and Matusow's hand went face down into the muck.
