Solomon Leads Day 2 of $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed

Jarred Solomon
Jarred Solomon

Out of the 901 entries to try their luck in Event #69: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed, just 202 will return for Day 2 action at 2:00 p.m. local time. All are chasing the top prize of $475,033 and WSOP gold bracelet, and since 136 players will make the money, the bubble is expected to break early in the day.

At the head of the pack is South Africa's Jarred Solomon, who will take a sizable 286,000-chip stack out of the bag. Not far behind is Dominik Nitsche, a feared no-limit player who has just begun to test the waters of four-card poker. The German three-time bracelet winner ended Day 1 with 220,200 chips. Max Silver, a widely respected British player who appears to have spent little time in the Rio this summer, has accumulated 187,000 chips thus far. Silver held the chip lead on his table for most of the first day of play but ultimately bagged a smaller stack than Romain Lewis, who advanced to Day 2 with 215,700.

Numerous additional notable names advanced alongside the biggest stacks, including Scott Bohlman (149,300), Martin Kozlov (140,700), Tommy Le (132,000), Phil Galfond (96,100), Daniel Negreanu (73,700), and Anthony Zinno (64,800).

Blinds will be 600/1,200 when play resumes. The seat draw can be found below. The plan is to play 10 levels with a 15-minute break every two levels and a one-hour dinner break after six levels (at about 8:30). Keep it here for continuing coverage of this event and throughout the 2018 World Series of Poker.

Hicks Sends Timoshenko Home

Niveau 12 : 800/1,600, 0 ante
Eric Hicks
Eric Hicks

With 8,800 chips in the pot and the board reading {Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, Eric Hicks checked from the big blind and Yevgeniy Timoshenko bet the pot from under the gun. Hicks check-raised all in, putting Timoshenko to a decision for his stack.

"Gotta put the pressure on, my friend. I've got a plane to catch," said Hicks as he moved his chips forward.

"I've got a plane to catch too," Timoshenko replied with a smile. "Well, this was my plan."

Timoshenko called to put himself at risk and the two players tabled their hands.

Eric Hicks: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{3-Clubs}
Yevgeniy Timoshenko: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}

Timoshenko had the best of it with his aces but Hicks had numerous ways to catch up. The {7-Clubs} on the turn gave Hicks a lock on the pot with a flush and he took the chips to eliminate Timoshenko after the {3-Spades} fell on the river.

Nitsche Scores a Double KO to Drag a Massive Pot

Niveau 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Dominik Nitsche
Dominik Nitsche

We arrived at the table when three hands were on their backs as Dominik Nitsche, Noah Schwartz, and William Migely tangled preflop with Nitsche covering both of his opponents. Schwartz had over 120,000 while Migely had about 115,000.

Migely: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Schwartz: {8-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Nitsche: {8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

The dealer spread out a board of {3-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}, giving Nitsche the nut straight to notch a double elimination. Nitsche dragged in a gigantic pot to surpass 500,000 in chips and take the pole position.

"It's my tournament!" Nitsche said while Schwartz and Migely were headed for the payouts with Migely taking a picture of the hands and the board before leaving.

Solomon Sinks Isane's Aces

Niveau 15 : 1,500/3,000, 0 ante
Jarred Solomon
Jarred Solomon

Jarred Solomon three-bet to 21,000 out of the small blind over Rein Isane's min-raise from the button. Isane fired back, four-betting to 63,000, and Solomon called. The {4-Hearts}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop brought a front-shove from Solomon for an effective 80,000 or so. Isane called right away.

Solomon: {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Spades}
Isane: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}

Isane was ahead with aces against a flush draw and the {J-Spades} turn was a great card for him as Solomon didn't improve his hand, drawing for nine-outer on the river. The {10-Hearts} was one of them as Solomon made a flush, sinking Isane's hopes for a further deep run. Isane sighed, watching the 300,000-pot going the other direction while his own tally was over.

Silver Chips Up Through Hicks

With a pile of about 125,000 chips in the middle and the board reading {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}{Q-Spades}, Eric Hicks bet 100,000 from the big blind into his lone opponent, Max Silver, who was under the gun. After a bit of consideration, Silver called.

The {4-Diamonds} fell on the river and Hicks checked. Silver shoved for 110,000, sending Hicks into the tank for several minutes. After asking the dealer to verify the bet and talking through his decision briefly, he folded, and Silver took the substantial pot to become one of the top stacks.

Lewis Boards a Rocket Ship to the Moon

Romain Lewis

We arrived when Dominik Nitsche checked from the big blind with the flop reading {8-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Romain Lewis fired what looked like 27,000 from the hijack and Nitsche called.

The turn came {10-Clubs} and Nitsche checked again. Lewis cut out a bet of 81,000 and Nitsche paused for about a minute before he potted. Lewis called all in for 270,500 total and the cards were turned up in likely the largest pot of the tournament so far.

Lewis: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}
Nitsche: {9-Spades}{7-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

Lewis was in great shape with the top set against the bottom set but he still needed to fade any six along with the remaining five in the deck.

The {7-Diamonds} was a safe card for Lewis who completed a mammoth double to move over 600,000 in chips. Nitsche was still left with a solid 215,000 despite suffering the massive blow.

Kid Poker's Showtime Continues

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu has been providing some good show for his railbirds, getting it in for his tournament life. More importantly, Negreanu keeps winning and doubling, casually soaring through the rankings.

Negreanu took the centre stage once again on a {2-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} turn with over 80,000 in the middle. Negreanu moved all in for 75,000, earning a call from Fnu Navkiran Singh.

Negreanu turned up {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} for a wheel and Singh was drawing slim with {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Clubs}, hoping to catch either a seven or a three to hit a full house. The river was the {K-Hearts}, giving Singh a set but that wasn't enough and Negreanu secured yet another double to vault over the virtual average line.

With 31,000 in the middle and the board reading {8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, Martin Kozlov checked from the big blind and Tim Andrew bet 17,000 from the cutoff. Kozlov check-raised the pot to 82,000. After some consideration, Andrew called.

The {7-Hearts} hit the river and both players checked. Andrew tabled {K-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{2-Hearts} for bottom set with a turned second-nut flush draw only to see Kozlov flip over {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} to take the pot with a set of nines.

"I was praying for a deuce on the river, actually," said Kozlov as he stacked his newly acquired chips.

Chen Gets a Full Double from Stout, Dispatches Silver as a Bonus

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
James Chen
James Chen

Matt Stout raised to 35,000 on the button, James Chen flatted in the small blind and Max Silver jammed for 107,000 out of the big blind. Both Stout and Chen raised and they came to the {J-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop with 321,000 in the middle. Chen shoved for roughly 300,000 and Stout immediately called.

Silver: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}
Stout: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}
Chen: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Chen flopped the bottom set but he had to fade a diamond to lock the side pot while Silver could hope for a gutshot.

The {A-Clubs} turn gave both Stout and Silver chances for a full house but they weren't able to spike a good river as the {J-Spades} secured the whole monster pot for Chen. Silver was eliminated while Stout ended up heavily clipped. Chen is now among the top stacks with 850,000.

Negreanu's Run Halted by a Bad Beat

Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu has shown several comebacks today, successfully doubling when he needed a chip-injection. It looked that Negreanu will do his trick once again as he got it in good with {A-}{A-}{K-}{5-} double suited against Ryan Lenaghan's {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}.

The board was, however, cruel to the winningest player of all times as the {3-Spades}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Clubs} gave Lenaghan trips on the river to Eliminate Negreanu in the last level of the day.
