Event #9: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship

Moving Day is Over; Eli Elezra Leads the Way with 22 Players Remaining

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Eli Elezra

Day 2 for most events is usually moving day. The day where players cut down the size of the field and in some cases, even play down through the money bubble. That was the case for Event #9: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Eight or Better Championship as the field was whittled from 83 starters, down to just 22 survivors. Leading the way at the end of the day was Eli Elezra who chipped up massively after the dinner break and during bubble play to bag up 858,000 chips.

Among the late entries for Day 2 were the likes of Phil Ivey, Iraj Parvizi, Matthew Ashton, Chris Ferguson, Cary Katz, Jeffrey Lisandro, Steven Wolansky and Mike Gorodinsky. Of those eight, only Gorodinsky survived while the rest fell in short order. Wolansky did the best of the rest and he locked up 23rd place for a cash of $14,912 in the event.

With the end of registration also came the finalization of the prizepool. The 169 total entrants created a prizepool of $1,588,600. First place for the event will take home a prize of $417,921 and a World Series of Poker gold bracelet. A trip to the final table in this event is worth at least $31,977 for 9th place.

Among those players who did not make it through the day were Marco Johnson, Carol Fuchs, Ian Johns, Jean-Robert Bellande, Esther Taylor, James Obst, Ralph Perry, Nick Schulman, Mark Gregorich, and Phil Hellmuth. Hellmuth played a tight, solid game for the most of the day, but lost most of his chips in a big hand at the feature table against Gorodinsky before moving all in with an overpair against Eli Elezra. Elezra flopped trips, then turns quads to send the Poker Brat to the rail in 38th place with nothing to show for his accomplishment.

The final player to exit the tournament without any money was Daniel Ratigan. Ratigan did his best to cockroach stack it up and survive and he even doubled up a few times, but in the end, it wasn't enough. He was sent to the rail by Jonathan Depa when Depa turned a full house. The next few players fell quickly after the bubble burst and the field lost Stuart Rutter, Dan Shak, Anthony Zinno, and Steven Wolansky, all of whom collected $14,912 for their run.

Players will return at 2pm tomorrow to play down to the final six players at which point action will be halted so the final table of this event can be live streamed. With that being said, players will pick up in Level 21 with limits of 12,000/24,000. Among those returning and joining Elezra are Jesse Martin (479,000), Felipe Ramos (401,000), Paul Volpe (372,000), Per Hildebrand (316,000), Dylan Linde (240,000), Mike Matusow (234,000), and Scott Bohlman (108,000), to name a few. PokerNews will be here to cover all the action from the event so be sure to check back in.

Coats Chips Up With Quads

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante

In the second last hand of the night, Kyle Miaso raised it up first to act and was called by Dustin Dirksen and Adam Coats in the cutoff. The flop fell {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and Miaso bet, Dirksen called and Coats raised to pick up two calls.

On the {10-Clubs} turn the trio checked and the {K-Spades} river was checked to Coats. His bet was called by Miaso only and Coats rolled over {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{J-Spades}{10-Spades} for quads. A frustrated Miaso mucked {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} right into the middle of the table and dropped below half a million in chips.

Steven Wolansky Eliminated in 23rd Place ($14,912)

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Steven Wolansky
Steven Wolansky

Steven Wolansky raised under the gun and Paul Volpe called in the big blind. After check-calling a bet on the {K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Spades} flop, Volpe bet the {3-Hearts} turn and Wolansky called. Volpe checked to see how much Wolansky had left, who replied "I have 25,000 behind."

Volpe bet the {J-Spades} on the river and Wolansky called it off. Volpe rolled over the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{6-Clubs} and received "you are good" as a reply.

In the very next hand, Wolansky was forced all in from the big blind for the last 5,000. Felipe Ramos raised and all other players folded.

Steven Wolansky: {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{2-Spades}
Felipe Ramos: {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}

The board came {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{2-Clubs} and that was it for Wolansky, who takes home $14,912 for his efforts.

Gorodinsky and Volpe Up

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante

Daniel Alaei raised and Mike Gorodinsky three-bet out of the small blind, Alaei called. The flop came {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Gorodinsky bet, Alaei called. A second barrel by Gorodinsky on the {K-Hearts} turn did the trick to force a fold.

One hand later, Felipe Ramos defended his big blind to a raise by Paul Volpe and check-called a bet on the {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop. The Brazilian checked the {J-Clubs} turn and folded to a second bet of Volpe.

Yakovenko Scoops Chanthabouasy

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante

From the small blind, Nikolai Yakovenko bet three streets on a {6-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{A-Clubs}{10-Spades}{10-Clubs} board and Steve Chanthabouasy called it off, after taking a minute on the river.

Yakovenko showed {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a flush and Chanthabouasy flung his hand in the muck.

Anthony Zinno Eliminated in 24th Place ($14,912)

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante

Anthony Zinno

Anthony Zinno was all in over two hands. In the first, he was quartered when Robert Mizrachi claimed most of the pot with the nut low and the best high. That left Zinno with just 24,000.

In the next hand, Zinno raised from early position.

"Protection," Zinno said. "I'm just gonna throw that word out there."

"I'll protect you," Nikolai Yakovenko said before raising from the small blind. Scott Bohlman called from the big blind though and Zinno called off the remainder of his chips.

The flop was {10-Clubs}{9-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and Yakovenko bet, Bohlman called.

On the {A-Spades} turn, Yakovenko bet again and Bohlman called. Both players checked the river. Yakovenko showed {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} which earned a muck from Bohlman and it bested Zinno's {Q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{6-Diamonds} as well, eliminating him from the tournament.

Hildebrand Takes From Volpe

Niveau 20 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante

Paul Volpe and Per Hildebrand have tangled multiple times today and once again played a three-bet pot. After Volpe had raised under the gun, Hildebrand three-bet in middle position and Volpe called.

Volpe check-called the {J-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds} flop and {7-Diamonds} turn before check-folding the {7-Hearts} river.

"Aces again? Had a beautiful double shooter, ace-deuce," Volpe commented after the hand.
