Jensen Tanks About 15 Minutes Before Making Massive Call on Altman

Niveau 24 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Brian Altman
Brian Altman

There was over 1 million in the pot between Frederik Jensen on the button and Brian Altman in the cutoff. The board had come {7-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{9-Spades}{q-Spades}{k-Spades} and a player at the table filled us in on the action leading to Jensen tanking for his stack.

Apparently, Altman had opened cutoff and Jensen called. Altman check-called 115,000 on the flop and 315,000 on the turn. On the river, Altman checked and Jensen bet 810,000. Altman shoved all in for Jensen's remaining chips, just over 2.9 million. Jensen had apparently been tanking around 10 minutes already. He placed his head in his hands as he thought and thought. Players from the table milled about, discussing the hand among themselves.

Finally, after about 15 minutes in the tank, Jensen grabbed some chips and placed them in the middle. Altman turned over {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} for aces with the nut flush blocker and Jensen showed {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a flopped straight.

"Yes!" he cried in relief, head turned up to the ceiling.

Niveau 23 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Joey Fabre
Joey Fabre

On a flop of {Q-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, Joey Fabre checked over to Jonathan Hilton who was in position and put out a bet of 100,000. Fabre called.

The turn was the {6-Clubs} and Fabre checked again. Hilton put out a bet of 350,000 and Fabre moved all in for 1,515,000. Hilton asked to make sure Fabre was all in, then called with a slightly covering stack.

Joey Fabre: {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Jonathan Hilton: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

Hilton's aces were in a big hole as Fabre flopped a set and Hilton couldn't catch up as the {K-Clubs} came on the river. He was forced to send over the chips to Fabre and Hilton was left with 125,000. After the double Fabre moved to around 3,500,000 chips.

Niveau 23 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
James Akenhead
James Akenhead

Justin Harvell opened to 60,000 from late position and action folded to the big blind where James Akenhead made it 240,000. Action was back on Harvell and he called.

The flop was {J-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Akenhead led with a bet of 220,000. Harvell just called.

The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and Akenhead thought for a few seconds before moving all in with a slightly covering stack. Harvell didn't waste any time calling off his stack for 920,000.

James Akenhead: {5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Justin Harvell: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

The river was the {Q-Spades} which did not complete Akenhead's straight draw and he was clipped to right around 220,000 chips while Harvell doubled to nearly three million.

Josephy Launches a River Bomb to Take Down a Big Pot

Niveau 23 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Cliff Josephy
Cliff Josephy

William Kopp opened with a raise to 55,000 from early position before Cliff Josephy made it 170,000 from the next seat over. Action folded around to the cutoff where Eric Liebeler cold-called Josephy's three-bet and Kopp called as well.

"Oh boy," Josephy said as the dealer began to spread the flop.

The flop was the {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{10-Spades} and Kopp and Josephy both checked to Liebeler who put out a bet of 250,000. Kopp folded while Josephy called.

The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and this time both players checked. On the {3-Clubs} river, Josephy thought for a bit before announcing that he was all in with a covering stack on Liebeler for about 1,700,000 effective. Liebeler thought for a good while before he finally let his hand go and Josephy took down the pot with no showdown.

Rollercoaster Ride for Esfandiari

Niveau 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

After a series of preflop raises, Antonio Esfandiari got all of his chips in the middle against Daniel Tang. Esfandiari was all in for 1,415,000 which was about half of Tang's stack.

Antonio Esfandiari: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Daniel Tang: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}

Esfandiari had a comfortable lead with his pocket kings against Tang's one overcard. However, the flop came {a-Spades}{j-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and Tang spiked an ace to take the lead. The dealer burned and turned the {k-Clubs} on the turn and Esfandiari jumped out of his seat as screams could be heard throughout the room.

Esfandiari just realized that it wasn't over yet as he came rushing back to the table to see the river card. Tang would need to hit a ten on the river but it was the {q-Hearts} that completed the board. Esfandiari scored a huge double up to keep his Main Event hopes alive.

Former Champion Cada Reminds Everyone Who He Is

Niveau 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Joe Cada
Joe Cada

Joe Cada's stack has recently dipped below the 15 big blind mark and he was recounting a tale of another occasion where he found himself even more short-stacked.

"I was in the big blind with eight big blinds," explained Cada to his table. "And it folded to the button and he thought about it before folding. And the small blind put me in and I had to call with jack-four. And the small blind had five-four and I won with jack-high.

"And after the hand, the button pounds the table and I'm like 'Easy guy, it's only eight blinds.' And he explained he folded ace-high. And I said to him 'How can you fold ace-high on the button?' and he said that he was worried the small blind was going to raise him.

"I was like, with a million dollar pay jump, he wants me out as much as you do!"

It was at this moment a tablemate interjected. "What tournament was this in?"

"This one, the 2009 Main Event," replied Cada.

"Where did you finish?" asked his tablemate.

"I won it," said Cada.

Kelly Minkin
Kelly Minkin

Jaime Kaplan opened to 50,000 from under the gun, and Roman Lanzerstorfer called in the cutoff, as did Kelly Minkin from the big blind.

The flop landed {5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, and action checked to Lanzerstorfer who bet 115,000. Minkin called, and Kaplan folded as the turn fell the {Q-Clubs}.

Minkin checked, Lanzerstorfer bet 185,000, and Minkin check-raised to 550,000. After some consideration, Lanzerstorfer made the call and the river of the {10-Clubs} completed the board.

Minkin pushed out a stack of chips amounting to 900,000, and after roughly three minutes in the tank, Lanzerstorfer called.

Minkin tabled her {A-Spades}{4-Clubs} for trips, and Lanzerstorfer mucked.

Paul Volpe

Paul Volpe raised to 55,000 from under the gun and Aram Zobian re-raised to 165,000 from middle position. It folded back to Volpe who called and they went heads up to the {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} flop.

Volpe checked, Zobian checked behind and the dealer burned and turned the {a-Clubs}. Again both players checked and the {4-Diamonds} completed the board.

Volpe checked for a third time and Zobian thought it over for a few moments and checked back. Volpe turned over {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} for quad aces and Zobian showed {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} before tossing his hand into the muck.

Two for Esfandiari; Petitti Eliminated

Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari opened to 62,000 from middle position and was called by Martin Sejer in the cutoff. Cory Williams was on the button and three-bet to 142,000. With the action back on Esfandiari, he four-bet shoved all in for 1,073,000. Sejer quickly folded and Williams went into the tank.

"That's a good sign," Esfandiari said, but then quickly went into a still pose. After a couple of minutes, Williams folded his hand but briefly showed Sejer to his right.

"What? No way!" Sejer exclaimed. After some discussion around the table, Sejer confirmed that Williams folded pocket queens.

In the next hand, Esfandiari raised to 51,000 again and Nicholas Petitti shipped all in for 181,000. Esfandiari quickly called and tabled {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} against Petitti's {j-Spades}{j-Hearts}. The board ran out {a-Hearts}{8-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and Esfandiari eliminated Petitti with a pair of aces.

Jaime Kaplan
Jaime Kaplan

The action folded to Jaime Kaplan on the button, and he raised to 55,000. Andres Jeckeln three-bet to 202,000 from the small blind, and once the big blind passed, Kaplan four-bet to 525,000.

Jeckeln called, and the dealer spread a {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{5-Spades} flop and both players checked.

The turn landed the {2-Diamonds} and after another Jeckeln check, Kaplan pushed out a bet of 325,000. Jeckeln called, and when the river of the {6-Spades} completed the board, Jeckeln checked for a third time.

Kaplan took a moment, and then pushed out three stacks of chips to amount to a bet of 750,000 total.

Jeckeln went deep into the tank before eventually making the call.

Kaplan revealed his {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} for quads, and Jeckeln mucked.
