Day 1c of Main Event Sees Record Turnout, Second-Biggest Overall Field Ever

Niveau 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel
WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel

Since the World Series of Poker Main Event went to three starting flights in 2012, Day 1c has traditionally hosted the biggest turnout. With the July 4 weekend coinciding with Day 1c this year and larger-than-usual turnouts on Day 1a (925) and Day 1b (2,378), some wondered if Day 1c would be as massive as usual.

As it turned out, a record field showed up at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, packing the halls and the tournament areas like never before.

The 4,571 runners who came out for Day 1c made it the biggest single flight in the history of the WSOP since organizers began divvying up the field into more than one starting day. Combined with the Day 1a and Day 1b numbers, that pushed the total field to 7,874, making it the second-biggest Main Event ever, behind only 2006's 8,773 entrants. It's nearly a 10 percent increase over the 7,221 who showed up last year.

The total prize pool came out to $74,015,600, and this year's world champion will claim a first-place prize of $8.8 million.

The number of surviving players wasn't immediately available, but an announcement from a tournament supervisor during the bagging process indicated about 3,500 players made it through, which would roughly match the ratio of survivors from the first two starting days.

French player Samuel Touil bagged the unofficial chip lead after five two-hour levels of play, turning his 50,000 starting stack into 352,800. That gives him the overall lead heading into Day 2.

"I think I played very well all day long," Touil said. "I got very lucky on a big hand when I four-bet shoved with six-eight of hearts on the button and flopped two pair for a pot of more than 145K. I also made a really big bluff at the beginning of the tournament. I just played my game today and my stack has never been at risk."

Samuel Touil
Samuel Touil had a banner Day 1c.

Other big stacks included Jarod Ludemann (230,100), Patrik Antonius (208,700), Loni Harwood (194,200), Tyler Patterson (166,900) and Chino Rheem (149,500).

Antonius said he was making his return to the WSOP after six years away.

"It felt very special to be back," he said. "I got in after dinner break, brought a lot of action to the table and managed to get some big hands."

"It was great to see so many poker players I have not seen in so long. I am very tired and going to rest for a while after this."

Superstars Phil Ivey (92,300) and Phil Hellmuth (63,700), as well as former Main Event champs Martin Jacobson (38,400), Jonathan Duhamel (17,500) and Joe Cada (16,500) also made it through.

Speaking of Jacobson, he'll be joined on Day 2 by fellow 888poker Ambassadors Parker Talbot, Dominik Nitsche, and Chris Moorman, among others.

Another former Main Event champ did the honors of getting the day underway, but that proved to be the high point of Chris Moneymaker's 2018 Main Event. Moneymaker was eliminated in an early level when, already short-stacked, he flopped a set of fives and got his stack in there against an overpair of tens. A ten hit on the river to send Moneymaker packing.

Andrew Moreno, Marcel Luske, Chris Vitch, Jonas Mackoff, John Racener, Vanessa Selbst and Daniel Negreanu also hit the rail. Negreanu got all his chips in the middle with jacks but took a beat when an opponent with tens hit a set.

The players who made it through will battle it out again on Friday, 6 July, for Day 2c. They'll return to the Rio at 11am that day. In the meantime, Day 1a and Day 1b survivors will populate the venue at the same time on Thursday, 5 July. Come back to PokerNews then for more coverage of the Main Event.

Ludemann Drags A Big One Off Beckley

Jarod Ludemann

As Day 1 of the 2018 WSOP Main Event drew to a close, 2015 Main Event runner-up Josh Beckley and Jarod Ludemann locked horns in a three-bet pot. It was Ludemann who had raised to 1,500 in middle position, Beckley made it 5,100 on the button and Ludemann called.

The flop was {A-Clubs}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Ludemann check-called 9,700 from Beckley. The {6-Diamonds} on the turn prompted a second barrel from Beckley worth 17,500. Once again, Ludemann check-called the bet.

The river was the {Q-Clubs} and Ludemann checked a third time. Beckley cut out a small bet what appeared to be 12,800 and Ludemann snap-called it off.

Josh Beckley: {6-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Jacob Ludemann: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}

Beckley's pair of sixes was no good and Ludemann scooped up the sizable pot.

Boeree Finds a Double Up

Liv Boeree

Anthony Reategui opened to 2,500 and it was called by the hijack button. Liv Boeree thought about her move for a minute and raised it to 9,500. Reategui quickly folded and the hijack pushed all in, putting Boeree's tournament at risk for her last 27,875 chips. Boeree snap-called and it created the following showdown:

Liv Boeree: {q-Spades}{q-Hearts}
Her opponent: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

It was a typical flip situation but the board {10-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} improved Boeree's hand into a full house and gave her the double up.

Negreanu Eliminated by Isaia

Davidi Kitai raised to 1,125 from middle position, and Alessio Isaia called in the cutoff. The action folded around to Daniel Negreanu in the big blind, and he moved all in for 18,000.

Kitai folded, but Isaia made the call.

Alessio Isaia: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Daniel Negreanu: {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}

Board: {2-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{k-Spades}{2-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}

Negreanu was in good shape for a double-up with pocket jacks, and every spectator in the ESPN Main Stage stood to see the dealer put down the board. When the flop revealed the 10-of-clubs, there was an array of gasps as Isaia took the lead.

Negreanu needed to hit a jack on the turn or river, but it didn't come, which resulted in the six-time WSOP bracelet winner and all-time money list leader being eliminated in the final level of the day.

Dan Colman Eliminated

In one of the last hands of the previous blind level Dan Colman raised to 1,000 from under the gun. Two players called and they went three handed to the {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{8-Hearts} flop. Colman continued with a bet of 2,000 and both players called.

The turn was the {a-Spades} and the action check around. The river was the {j-Spades} and it checked to the player in late position who bet 5,000. With the action back on Colman he check-raised all in for about 39,000 and his opponent called.

Colman showed {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs} but his opponent turned over {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for jacks full of tens to earn the pot and the elimination.

In the last hand before the break the action folded around to the player in the cutoff who raised to 1,200. Vanessa Selbst re-raised to 3,800 from the small blind and Ryan Hohner made it 8,000 from the big blind. Selbst called and they went heads-up to the {q-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop.

Selbst checked to Hohner who bet 5,000 and Selbst check-raised to 16,700. Hohner called and the dealer burned and turned the {4-Clubs}. Selbst moved all in for 46,900 and Hohner called.

Selbst turned over {j-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} for just jack high and was drawing dead against the {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} of Hohner. The meaningless {6-Spades} completed the board and Selbst was eliminated.

The Biggest WSOP Starting Day Ever

Niveau 5 : 250/500, 75 ante

When it was announced earlier this year that Day 1c of the 2018 World Series of Poker Main Event would take place on the fourth of July, which of course is America’s Independence Day, some speculated the turnout might be stunted. As it turns out, nothing could've been further from the truth.

A massive 4,571 players on 1c made it the largest starting flight in WSOP history, surpassing the 4,262 set on 1c in 2017. That number is well ahead of the entire 2004 WSOP field, and five times as big as the 2003 WSOP Main Event when Chris Moneymaker changed the poker world forever.

Along with 1a’s 925 runners and 2,378 from 1b (also the largest 1b flight in history surpassing 2017’s 2,164) the total field climbed to 7,874 players, which generated a $74,015,600 prize pool and made it the second-largest WSOP Main Event behind the 2006 field (8,773 players).

Detailed numbers only go back until 2008, and up until 2011, the WSOP ran four starting flights. The largest flight between then was the 2009 WSOP’s 2,809 players on Day 1d followed by 2,802 on 1d in 2011. In 2009, registration closed with 2,809 players registered, as there was no space for more entrants. Players like Patrik Antonius and TJ Cloutier were famously locked out of playing the event that year.

We’ll have to wait and see who bags up the most chips later this evening, but for those wondering, last year saw Jerome Brion finished with 247,900 to claim the chip lead among the surviving 3,300 players.

Day 1a saw 659 players bag from the 925 that entered. Last night, 1,794 players survived Day 1b from the 2,378 that signed up.

John Racener has been eliminated

Jason Gray opened to 1,025 in middle position and John Racener flatted in the hijack. The small blind came along but he was just a sparring partner on the {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} which brought fireworks from Gray and Racener.

Gray continued for 3,100, Racener raised to 8,400 and the action returned to Gray who countered with a three-bet to 19,100. Racener shoved all in for just over 30,000 and Gray was ready to go.

Racener was ahead with {6-Clubs}{5-Clubs} but Gray had a straight flush draw with {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. And he captured the best card on the {8-Diamonds} turn, leaving Racener drawing dead.

"If you're gonna go out, that's the way to go out, right?" Racener said before leaving the table.

Meanwhile, a meaningless {K-Hearts} completed the board and Gray moved up to 90,000 or so.

Farrell Almost Jinxes Himself, Still Doubles

Niveau 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Niall Farrell (as seen in a previous event)
Niall Farrell (as seen in a previous event)

Niall Farrell was grinding a short stack for quite some time but finally found an opportunity to try to spin it up against, shoving his last 6,225 in from middle position. He received a call right from his left-hand opponent and the action paused at the big blind who contemplated his decision. Then he folded, showing {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

Farrell celebrated, saying: "It's good, cause I need this one," and showed the ace of spades. He turned the other card as well and it became apparent he was all in with {A-Spades}{5-Spades} against {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}.

"Ooooh, I'm ahead!" Farrell was excited but then he realized what he just did.

"Oh, that was bad. Now I'm out," he laughed.

And the {8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop gave his opponent plenty of additional outs. But the rest of the board bricked out as the {6-Clubs} and {6-Hearts} completed the board and Farrell doubled up.

"Oh my god, no f****** way!" Farrell shouted in excitement, knowing that he dodged the deadly bullet.
