Rios Wields the Button

Niveau 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Michael Rios
Michael Rios

One of the dominating stacks of the Bronze area in the Brasilia Room belongs to Michael Rios aka Diamond Mike. Back in Level 3 he’d amassed over 120,000 chips, and he’s now hovering around 200,000. He demonstrated one way to build a stack, picking up four and a half big blinds’ worth of chips at the close of the last level (600/1,200). After two players limped in (one mid-position, one on the cut-off), he promptly made it 4,600 from the button. There was little delay in the other players’ cards hitting the muck.

Phan vs Avila Round 2

Niveau 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
John Phan
John Phan

Another big pot was developing between John Phan and Carlos Avila. The flop read {3-Spades}{4-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}. Phan checked over to Avila who was on the button. Avila put in a bet of 5,500 which was called by Phan.

The turn was the {j-Spades}. Phan checked again and Avila put out a bet of 8,000. Phan thought for a while, methodically leaned down to take a sip from the straw in his drink a few times, then raised to 20,000. Avila paused for a moment before making the call.

The river was the {6-Spades}, completing any possible flush draws. Phan took a few more drinks from his straw and stared down Avila for about a minute before checking to which Avila quickly checked back.

Phan announced "ace" and showed the {a-Hearts}{8-Clubs} which was just barely good enough to pip Avila's weaker ace with the {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}.

The brewing interesting matchup between the two has so far gone round 1 to Avila and round 2 to Phan.

"The Mover" Transports Chips to His Stack

Niveau 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

In a large pot of already at least 80,000 two players were on the turn with the board reading {3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}. The first player to act, who was in the small blind, bet 27,000. Steven Fricks called to swell the pot to over 130,000.

The river was the {k-Diamonds} putting four diamonds on the board. This slowed the action as both players checked. The small blind showed the {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} and Fricks showed the {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} for a small flush that was good enough to take down the hefty pot.

"They call me The Mover" said Fricks as he hauled in the chips. Certainly an appropriate name for him in this particular hand as his stack is now over 200,000

Parker's Big Slick Gets There

Niveau 8 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Three players’ stacks found their way into the middle in the Brasilia Room just before the level change. Kyle Parker had raised, a short stack moved all-in, and Joel Thomas three-bet a tower of purple 5,000 chips from the blinds to give Parker his own decision regarding his tournament life. A short while later, that decision was made, his 25,000 or so going in too.

Short stack: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Parker: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Thomas: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The {q-Spades}{3-Spades}{6-Hearts} flop made a double elimination seem the most likely outcome (Joel was also the only player with a spade in his hand) but the turn and river rolled out {10-Hearts}{j-Hearts} completing a broadway straight for Parker. Joel’s tower lost a couple of stories but is still over 140,000.

Avila Takes From Phan

Niveau 7 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

With a board reading {5-Spades}{9-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, after it was checked to him, John Phan bet 2,500 over to Carlos Avila who raised to 10,000. Phan thought for a while before calling to grow the pot.

The turn was the {3-Hearts}. Avila moved all in for his remaining 27,000. Phan mulled over the decision briefly before making the call. Avila was ahead with the {a-Spades}{6-Spades} but needed to fade several outs as Phan held the {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for a nut flush draw.

The river would be kind to Avila when it came peacefully in the form of the {k-Clubs} to give Avila a big double up through the still large stack of Phan.
