Event #28: $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed

Day 1 of Event #28 $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed has come to an end after nearly 14 hours of play. The starting field of 1,069 players was trimmed all the way down to 59 by end of the wild day and night of four-card action.

Bagging the chip lead was Ryan Gibson who bagged a whopping 1,940,000, a full 600,000 more than second place and more than double some of the top five stacks. He caught fire the last few levels, started to amass a massive stack and there was nothing his opponents could do about it.

He eliminated several players who had previously had large stacks such as David Prociak and Kevin Eyster, before they met their untimely end at the hands of Gibson. Gibson has no recorded poker results to speak of thus far, but finds himself in prime position to change that with a bang.

Second in chips to end the night was Alexander Yen, chipleader for much of the final levels before Gibson’s meteoric ascent. He ended the night with a substantial 1,314,000 in chips.

The only other player to end the night with over 1 million was Jonathan Therme with 1,033,000. Dylan Weisman finished the night fourth in chips with 937,000 after he briefly held the chip lead late in the night. Bracelet winner Michael Perrone rounded out the top five nightly stacks with 750,000.

A few other notable players to find a bag were Georgios Sotiropoulos (474,000), Jungwoong Park (154,000) and Joseph Cheong (454,000), who was short -tacked for the final few levels but managed to spin it up to a healthy amount to ready himself for a potential deep run on Day 2.

Unsurprisingly, there were several players who did not find a bag and were eliminated. The top 161 players ended up with a money finish, and some of those who finished in the money included Ryan Laplante, Daniel Negreanu and Adam Owen.

Day 2 will kick off at 12 p.m. local time at Level 18. Blinds will increase to 60 minutes in length and the plan is to play from 59 all the way down to the final five.

PokerNews will provide blow-by-blow action of this event from start to finish, so stay turned for more Pot-Limit Omaha action from the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Flopped Set No Good for Teliani

Niveau 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Nohad Teliani jammed for her last 11,000 in early position and the action folded around to Leonard Sandy in the small blind who raised to 20,000. Eddie Byrant called in the big blind, building a side pot.

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Sandy continued for 20,000 and Bryant made the call. Both players checked on the {6-Spades} turn and the river was the {8-Hearts}. Sandy fired again, this time for 30,000 and Bryant quickly folded.

Teliani tabled {a-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} which flopped a set of sevens and rivered a small straight but Sandy tabled {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}{10-Spades}{9-Spades} for a straight to the ten and scooped the entire pot while eliminating Teliani.

Gibson Calls River, Swells Stack

Niveau 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Action was on the turn with a pot of about 170,000 in the middle. The board read {6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}. Ryan Gibson called the bet of 150,000 form his opponent after a tank.

The river came the {10-Diamonds}. Gibson had another decision to make as his opponent bet again this time for 370,000. Gibson thought for quite a while, playing with his chips before calling.

His opponent tabled the {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{x-}. "Just a pair?" confirmed Gibson and tabled the winner with the {q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Spades} two-pair and took down the huge pot to increase his chip lead.

Bryant Eliminates Worker

Niveau 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

After a series of raises preflop, Greg Worker was at risk against Eddie Bryant for a little over 120,000.

Greg Worker: {k-Clubs}{k-Spades}{10-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Eddie Bryant: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Spades}

Worker had run into Bryant's aces and the board came {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, giving both players a set but Bryant's set meant Worker was heading to the payout desk.

Bhandari Fires Twice

Niveau 17 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante

Jonathan Therme raised under the gun and the action folded around to Manan Bhandari who defended the big blind.

The dealer spread a flop of {k-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Bhandari led out for 21,000, which Therme called.

On the {9-Spades} turn, Bhandari dropped a stack of 5,000 chips and a couple of 1,000 chips on top for a total of 67,000. Therme looked puzzled and eventually decided on letting the hand go.
