Welcome to Day 1 of Event #5: $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better

2019 Champion Derek McMaster
2019 Champion Derek McMaster

With the 2021 World Series of Poker now fully underway here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, action continues today at 3 p.m. local time with Event #5: $1,500 Omaha Hi/Lo 8 or Better.

During the same event in 2019, it was Derek McMaster who took down his first WSOP bracelet after overcoming a star-studded final table, which included the likes of bracelet winners Ben Yu, John Esposito, and David Halpern. Given that several high-profile players were already present in the $25k H.O.R.S.E. event, we expect plenty of notables to join the fray in this series first Omaha event.

Players will begin with 25,000 in chips and limits will start at 200-400. Levels will last 40 minutes throughout the day with a 15-minute break at the end of every three levels. There will be no dinner break on Day 1. Play will conclude for the day after 15 levels. Late registration is available through level nine and there will be no rebuys allowed.

Stick with PokerNews as we bring you the quarters, scoops, and bust-outs here on Day 1!

Esposito Slips

Niveau 2 : 200/400, 0 ante

A player in the cutoff called and John Esposito raised out of the small blind. The big blind called, as did the initial limper.

Esposito continued on the {7-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{j-Hearts} flop and was called by both of his opponents.

Esposito fired again on the {8-Spades} turn. This time, only his opponent in the big bind called.

Both players checked on the {10-Spades} river and Esposito's opponent tabled {a-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{9-Spades} for a straight.

"I can't beat a straight," the WSOP bracelet winner said as he mucked his hand.
