Where Are They Now: Poker Author, Mathematician & Bracelet Winner Jerrod Ankenman

Niveau 12 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jerrod Ankenman
Jerrod Ankenman

Back in the late 2000’s, long before solvers were a thing, a group of math-focused individuals changed the face of poker. Players like Matt Hawrilenko, Bill Chen, and Jerrod Ankenman introduced a more math-based approach to poker; in fact, Chen and Ankenman even wrote a book titled The Mathematics of Poker.

Between 2006-09, the triumvirate won five World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets between them and seemingly set the wheels in motion for the game to evolve into today’s “solver era.” Like many others before them, all three moved away from the game over the next decade, with Hawrilenko temporarily coming out of “retirement” back in the 2015 WSOP.

Similarly, Ankenman made a rare appearance at the Rio when he was spotted in Event #44: $3,000 6-Handed Limit Hold’em. The 2009 WSOP Event #42: $2,500 8-Game Mix bracelet winner has an impressive limit hold’em résumé that includes a pair of runner-up finishes in WSOP event. Back in 2006, he took second to Ian Johns in Event #23: $3,000 Limit Hold’em for $150,586 and two years later finished runner-up to Rob Hollink in Event #30: $10,000 Limit Hold’em Championship.

Park Takes it with Nine-High

Niveau 12 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

In a limped pot blind versus blind, the flop came {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{3-Spades} and the small blind led for 3,500 and Calvin Park made the call.

The {2-Hearts} fell on the turn and the small blind continued to fire, this time for 11,000 and Park called once again.

On the {a-Clubs} river after it checked to Park he tanked for a while and counted his chips and looked tempted to bet. Eventually, he decided to check back and both players showed. The small blind tabled {6-Spades}{4-Clubs} for six-high and Park took down the pot when he tabled {9-Spades}{4-Spades} for nine-high.

Moshe Smashes a Set to Bust Ilani

Niveau 11 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Asi Moshe
Asi Moshe

Ran Ilani raised under the gun to 6,000 and the action folded around to the small blind who three-bet to 16,000. Asi Moshe was in the big blind and ripped his entire stack of 81,500 in the middle. Ilani instantly called off his 55,000 stack and the small blind went into the tank. After about two minutes the small blind folded and both hands were tabled.

Ran Ilani: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Asi Moshe: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

Ilani gained some hope when the ace was the window card on the {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}{7-Spades} flop, but the seven followed giving Moshe a set. The board completed with the {3-Clubs} on the turn and the {2-Hearts} on the river for Moshe to eliminate Ilani.

Astedt Leaves Wilkie With Dust

Niveau 11 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Niklas Astedt
Niklas Astedt

Niklas Astedt raised from the button and Steve Wilkie defended his big blind bringing action heads-up to the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop.

Both players checked bringing the {6-Hearts} turn and Wilkie led out for 5,000. Astedt raised to 15,000 and Wilkie called to see the {4-Diamonds} complete the board on the river.

Wilkie check-called the 30,000 bet from Astedt and the two players tabled their hands.

Wilkie rolled over {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for trip tens but he was out-kicked by Astedt who held {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} to win the pot.

Johnson Sends One Out

Niveau 11 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Marco Johnson
Marco Johnson

Marco Johnson raised under the gun to 5,000 and while the small blind was thinking about what to do, the big blind called out of turn. The small blind then raised to 27,500, leaving only 1,000 behind, and with the action changing, the big blind took back the 2,500 and folded.

Johnson accidentally only called by putting in the extra 1,000 chip and not saying anything. They both agreed to put the extra 1,000 in each as the dealer was fanning the flop.

Small Blind: {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Marco Johnson: {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Johnson was slightly behind with the king-high but the flop came {k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs}, giving him a pair of kings. The board completed with the {6-Clubs} on the turn and the {7-Clubs} on the river, eliminating the opponent.

Strelitz Gets Kings Cracked

Niveau 11 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Daniel Strelitz
Daniel Strelitz

In a pot where an early position player opened and a late position player flat-called, Daniel Strelitz three-bet to 15,000 and only the player in early position called.

The player checked on the flop of {j-Hearts}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts} and called when Strelitz bet 12,000. The player checked once more on the {8-Clubs} turn and snap-called when Strelitz moved all-in for around 30,000.

Daniel Strelitz: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Opponent: {j-Clubs}{j-Spades}

Strelitz was in bad shape as his opponent had a set of jacks. The {7-Hearts} on the river didn't change the outcome of the hand and Strelitz was eliminated.
