Event #20: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw at the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas attracted 350 runners, generating a prize pool of $467,250. On Saturday, June 11th, just nine players returned for the third and final day of the tournament with all eyes on the $108,250 prize and the WSOP gold bracelet due to the eventual winner.

After just over eight hours of play, Denis Nesterenko of Moscow, Russia bested the Day 2 chipleader Von Altizer in heads-up play to record the largest cash of his career.

“I’m very happy”, said a visibly emotional Nesterenko on the victory.

This was Nesterenko’s second-ever WSOP tournament entry and first cash. A cash that in itself dwarfs his entire lifetime earnings of $35,201.

Coming into Day 3, the tournament was two eliminations away from the official seven-handed final table. The two players unfortunate enough to fall just short of the final table were James Maguire (9th-$8,230) and Kenny Hsiung (8th-$8,230).

Final Table Action

Last year’s runner-up in this event and the shortest stack coming into Day 3, Peter Lynn, was the first to fall at the final table; his king-high bested by Yufei Zhong’s eight-seven. Next to go was four-time bracelet winner and mixed game specialist Benny Glaser, again at the hands of a rampant Zhong, with Glaser’s made eight-seven falling to Zhong’s drawn seven-six.

Five-handed play continued for some time before Zhong, who came into the day second in chips, was ousted by Nesterenko’s nine-eight. Play slowed down again after that until eventually Hieu Luu, riding the short stack since Day 2, paired up on the last draw when at risk against Nesterenko.

Not long after that Evan Sayer headed to the exits in third when his ten-eight was pipped by Altizer’s nine-eight, setting up a heads-up battle between Altizer and Nesterenko.

Nesterenko began heads-up play with a slight chip advantage, a lead he never lost. Altizer was down to her last card twice, and Nesterenko could not seal the deal.

Eventually, the end came when Altizer’s eight-five was not good enough to beat Nesterenko’s seven-six.

Though Altizer, who finished seventh in a similar version of this event back at the 2012 WSOP, will undoubtedly be disappointed, her runner-up finish worth $66,910 does secure the largest cash of her career. Meanwhile, Nesterenko gets to join the elite club of poker players with a WSOP gold bracelet.

Congratulations to Denis Nesterenko on winning Event #20: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw!

It was all in before the draws as Von Altizer was short stacked. If Denis Nesterenko won the hand he would win the bracelet and the tournament. Both players patted down the whole way. Altizer declared {8-}{5-}{x-}{x-}{x-} but she would be eliminated as she couldn't beat Nesterenko's {7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}. Stay tuned for a full tournament recap.

Action folded to Von Altizer in the small blind who raised. Evan Sayer three-bet all in from the big blind and Altizer called to put him at risk.

Altizer stood pat on the first draw while Sayer took three cards. On the second draw, Altizer again stood pat and this time Sayer drew one. The same drawing pattern was repeated on the third and final draw and Altizer flipped over {9-}{8-}{6-}{3-}{2-}. Sayer tabled {7-}{5-}{4-}{2-} and would need to catch a three, six, eight or nine. Unfortunately for him the final card was a {10-} and Sayer headed to the rail in 3rd place, an impressive run that sees him bank $44,347.

Denis Nesterenko raised from the button and was called by Hieu Luu. Both drew two. Luu check-called Nesterenko's bet. Luu drew two while Nesterenko drew one. Again Luu called the Russian's bet.

Both drew one and Nesterenko bet a third time. Luu called but mucked his hand as he couldn't beat Nesterenko's {8-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{3-}. The hand left Luu with less than one blind.

Luu doubled but was eliminated by Nesterenko as he Luu paired his five when all-in with {8-}{5-}{5-}{4-}{2-} which couldn't beat the Russians {9-}{8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}. Luu walked away in 4th place with $30,107 extra in his pocket.

Evan Sayer raised from under the gun and received a sole call from Von Altizer out of the small blind.

Altizer took two cards on the initial draw and Sayer followed suit. The end of Day 2 chipleader then bet out and was called by Sayer.

Both players took one card on the second draw and Altizer followed up her earlier aggression with another bet. As before, Sayer called.

On the final draw Altizer stood pat and then bet into Sayer for a third time after he drew one. Sayer quickly called but was shown {8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, a hand he could not beat. Altizer now has more than half of the chips in play.

Yufei Zhong entered the final day second in chips but could not find any momentum. Action folded around to Zhong on the button, who raised. Denis Nesterenko three-bet out of the small blind and Zhong called.

On the initial draw both players took one card. They then checked to the second draw, where they again each drew one card. Action checked through to the final draw.

Zhong took another card, as did Nesterenko, who then bet enough to force Zhong all in. Zhong thought long and hard about his decision but eventually made the call only to be shown {9-}{8-}{6-}{5-}{2-} by Nesterenko. Zhong mucked and headed to the payout desk.

Benny Glaser raised from middle position and faced a three-bet from Yufei Zhong out of the small blind. Glaser called to send the two players heads-up to the initial draw.

During the first draw Zhong took two and Glaser one. Action checked through.

On the second draw both players opted to take one card. This time Zhong bet into Glaser who pushed his last few chips into the middle. Zhong called to put Glaser at risk.

The final draw saw Zhong take one card and Glaser stand pat. Glaser turned over {8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}{2-} while Zhong revealed he held {6-}{5-}{3-}{2-}. Peeking while slowly peeling his last card, Zhong told the table he had a "fifty-fifty" chance of hitting an eight or a seven that would send Glaser packing. When he eventually turned the card over it was a {7-} and the most experienced player left in the field made his exit.

Peter Lynn came into the day as the short stack but found a couple double ups early to navigate his way to the final table.

Action folded to Yufei Zhong in the cutoff, who raised. The button and small blind got out of the way and Peter Lynn out of the big blind raised all in. Zhong made the call to put Lynn at risk.

On the initial draw Lynn took three to Zhong's two. The second draw saw Lynn once again take three while Zhong stood pat. "I made a good break" joked Lynn as he discarded two during the final draw. Zhong stood pat and showed {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}. "I'm gonna need help", remarked Lynn as he revealed {8-}{6-}{3-}{2-}. Unfortunately for him, the {k-} was not what he was looking for, ending Lynn's run in 7th place.

Nine Return to Battle for a Bracelet in Day 3 of Event #20: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw

Von Altizer
Von Altizer

After another ten levels of play yesterday only nine remain from the initial 350 entry field in Event #20: $1,500 Limit 2-7 Lowball Triple Draw at the 2022 World Series of Poker at Bally’s and Paris Las Vegas. Included are former bracelet winners Benny Glaser and Kenny Hsiung. Hsiung won his only bracelet in the $3,000 Limit Hold-em ten years ago while Glaser will be looking to win his fourth.

Last year's runner-up Peter Lynn remains in the mix but it will take a miracle for him to best his 2nd place finish of last year as he comes into the day as the short stack with just 75,000, only 5,000 more chips than he entered Day 2 with. Von Altizer (2,625,000) andYufei Zhong (2,290,000) come into the final day as overwhelming chip leaders, leading the race towards taking down a coveted bracelet.

Action will continue at 2 p.m. local time in the Bally’s Horseshoe where the nine remaining will play down to a winner. PokerNews will be here to cover the final day as another bracelet winner will be crowned.
