Ahmed Karrim Leads Day 1a of The Closer

Niveau 22 : Blinds 10,000/25,000, 25,000 ante
Ahmed Karrim
Ahmed Karrim

Day 1a of Event #85 $1,500 The Closer is in the books with Ahmed Karrim in the lead with 1,695,000. The South African, who has secured five WSOP cashes this summer, is narrowly ahead of Raghav Bansal of India with 1,600,000.

A total of 929 players entered the fray, with only 75 making it to Day 2, which will be played on Sunday, July 17th at 1 p.m. local time.

The bubble burst shortly after the final break of the night when Ukrainian Vadim Shelz knocked out the button player after rivering a flush against their opponent's flopped wheel, guaranteeing the remaining players a minimum payday of $2,405.

Day 1a Action

Several big names played one of the last events of the series. Still, they failed to make the money, including Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Phil Hellmuth, Maria Konnikova and Justin Bonomo.

Some big names did manage to bag and tag. Jen Shahade will be back on Sunday with 920,000, David "ODB" Baker bagged 735,000 and Roland Israelashvili finished with 500,000.

It was the tale of two Nguyens today as Mingh Nguyen and Men Nguyen both troubled the top of the leaderboard. Men "The Master" Nguyen ran up a stack to over 1,000,000 at one point but was eventually eliminated in 130th place to cash for $2,405.

Mingh Nguyen bagged 925,000, but it could have been very different. At the peak of his powers, his stack was 2,100,000 and would have been an overwhelming chipleader.

Among the names to have bust out but have cashed are Liina Vark ($2,631), Steven Zolotow ($2,631), Farah Galfond ($2,631) and Christina Gollins ($3,006).

One of the hands of the day was when Korean Eunyoung Choi defeated their opponent with quad kings against quad eights. Choi bagged 250,000, which is around eight big blinds.

Day 1b will begin at noon local time in Paris with 22 30-minute levels with a 75-minute dinner break after level 12. As always, Poker News will be first with all of the latest news from the World Series of Poker at its new home of Bally's and Paris Las Vegas.

Zolotow's Shove Gets Through

Niveau 17 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Steve Zolotow
Steve Zolotow

Steve Zolotow opened to 17,000 from the hijack. He got a call from the cutoff while the button and blinds got out of the way.

On the {4-Hearts}{q-Spades}{k-Spades} flop, Zolotow rearranged and counted his chips briefly, before moving them all into the middle of the table. A handful of seconds later, his opponent folded, giving Zolotow the pot.

Zolotow has been a World Series of Poker regular for over 30 years, with WSOP cashes dating back to 1985. The veteran has amassed over $3,200,000 in career earnings, including two WSOP bracelets. His stack, now at nearly double the average, has him in good position to make a run at bracelet #3, which would be his first since 2001.

All the chips were in the middle preflop with Joon Kim in middle position at risk for 74,500 against Allen Kessler in the hijack.

Joon Kim: {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}
Allen Kessler: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

The flop of {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Clubs} reduced the number of outs available to Kessler as Kim had a club. The runout of {6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} was no help for "Chainsaw" and is reduced to less than five big blinds while Kim is around average stack.

Negreanu Eliminated After Consecutive All Ins

Niveau 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Action was joined after Neel Joshi moved all in for 40,000. He got one caller in Daniel Negreanu, sitting just a couple seats to his left. With Joshi as the player at risk, the two tabled their hands.

Neel Joshi: {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Daniel Negreanu: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Negreanu was ahead, but the {q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop gave Joshi a flush draw. The {2-Hearts} turn completed that flush to put Joshi ahead, leaving Negreanu drawing dead. The {9-Hearts} river put a flush on the board, but Joshi scooped with the king of hearts.

Just seconds later after the next hand had been dealt, Negreanu announced that he was all in again. for a total of 63,500. He got one caller, Antoine Vranken from the small blind, who had Negreanu covered.

Daniel Negreanu: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}
Antoine Vranken: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

"This guy's been going all in every other hand!" one player at the table said to PokerNews, referring to Negreanu, who was now in bad shape to stay alive, with just 20% equity in the hand. The {10-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} flop was of no help, nor was the {a-Diamonds} turn. Negreanu had just two outs, but neither came as the {10-Spades} completed the board on the river, knocking Negreanu out of the tournament.

Vranken and another player at the table informed PokerNews about another critical hand that had happened not much prior. Negreanu had gotten it all in with jacks against Vranken who had queens. A jack came on the flop to put Negreanu ahead, but then a queen hit on the turn putting him back behind, resulting in a double up for Vranken.

Jack McClelland
Jack McClelland

Barry Greenstein opened from early position to 5,500. Jack McClelland made the call from late position, as did the small and big blinds.

Greenstein continued for 10,000 on the {k-Spades}{a-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop. McClelland called while the blinds got out of the way.

On the {4-Spades} turn, Greenstein fired a third barrel, this time for 20,000. McClelland tossed in a single chip, announcing that he was all-in as he did so, a shove worth 47,100. Greenstein thought for a bit before eventually making the laydown.

"You folded ace-queen?" a player asked from across the table. Greenstein nodded his head silently while McClelland scooped the pot.

Walton Doubles Through Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu opened from early position for 2,500. Adam Walton, in the hijack, reraised to 7,500. Negreanu, after prepping his vlog equipment, moved all in. "I don't really have a good hand for the situation," Walton said as he made the call with the effective stack of 36,600.

Adam Walton: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}
Daniel Negreanu: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

"We're gonna play this flippity dippity," Negreanu said to his vlog as the dealer was about to put out the flop. That flop came {8-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}, putting Walton ahead. The {6-Hearts} turn and {4-Clubs} river changed nothing, and the pot belonged to Walton, doubling his stack through the six-time bracelet winner.

Taylor Folds Kings Full

Niveau 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Esther Taylor
Esther Taylor

The details of this hand were provided to PokerNews courtesy of Esther Taylor

Four players paid 2,000 to see the {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop. Taylor led out for 3,000, and got two callers.

The {j-Diamonds} came on the turn, and Taylor continued for 8,000 and got the same callers, leading to the {q-Diamonds} on the river. Action checked over to the player in the one seat, who moved all in for 15,000. Taylor called with about 15,000 left behind. The third player rejammed to put Taylor all in as well, but she folded {k-}{5-} face up.

The rejammer had jacks full of kings, while the original jammer had the ace high flush, and was promptly sent to the rail. Taylor had gotten blown off the best hand, but would win a pot a few hands later to get back to starting stack. She is just two days removed from a second-place finish in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em/Pot-Limit Omaha event, for which she took home a cash of $171,787.

"I just want everyone to know how bad I am at Hold'em," she commented jokingly after recapping the hand, "specifically No-Limit."

The Trooper Doubles Up

Tim 'Trooper 97' Watts
Tim 'Trooper 97' Watts

There was 11,000 in the middle with a flop of {10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. All four players checked and the {3-Spades} landed on the turn.

Timothy Watts bet 5,500 from the hijack which gained a fold from under the gun and early position, but the middle position player check-raised to 16,500. Watts made the call.

The {5-Diamonds} was dealt on the river and the middle position moved all in. Watts called within an instant and the middle position player reluctantly showed {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} who missed their double-gutter.

Watts turned over {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} to win the pot and the YouTube Vlogger is now in the six-figures.
