Anton Morgenstern was one card away from nearly bubbling a high roller at the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), but a lucky one-outer on the river kept him alive.
In Event #23: $50,000 High Roller (8-Handed), with 21 players remaining, Morgenstern was down to just 12 big blinds. That put him in a tough position because only 19 of the 124 who began the tournament would be paid.
Max Pescatori raised for Igor Zektser, Mike Gorodinsky and Mike Thorpe to come along. Pescatori bet the A♠6♦2♦ flop and earned a call from Zektser only. The 5♦ followed on the turn and another bet by Pescatori won the pot uncontested, as Zektser folded the 2♠2♣ face-up.
Down to a mere 6,000, Phil Hui was all-in out of the big blind before the flop. Jason Berilgen looked him up from the button and the cards were flipped over.

The Q♦J♠4♠ flop left Hui with some equity, which suddenly increased by a lot on the A♦ turn. However, the A♣ river only improved Berilgen to trips and that spelled the end for Hui.
Aaron Duczak was all-in with a severe short stack and earned two callers in Patrick Leonard from one seat over and James Obst out of the small blind. Two bets went in after the J♠5♦4♠8♦ turn before Obst also bet the K♦ river. Leonard called and the cards were revealed.
Obst's A♣A♦7♦6♣ had turned a straight and rivered a flush with a seven-six low, while Duczak had the Q♥3♠3♣2♥ for a superior low. However, it was Leonard who earned the low portion with the A♠8♠8♥3♥.
Ozea Ingram was all-in on the short stack from early position and was called by Jen Harman in the small blind and Jake Liebeskind in the big blind.
The flop came K♣Q♦3♦ and both Harman and Liebeskind checked.
The dealer turned the A♥ and Harman checked again, but this time Liebeskind found a bet, forcing Harman to fold.

The river was the 5♣ eliminating the possibility of a low for Ingram and his two pair would fall to the set of kings of Liebeskind.
Scott Clements and a third player looked up the short stack all-in of William McMahan and the cards of the former were already mucked on a completed board of K♥6♥2♠4♦10♠. McMahan's A♥9♥7♣3♣ narrowly missed a scoop as the hearts draw bricked but the nut low earned half of the low versus A♣K♠6♦3♥.
Matthew Woodward was all-in and at risk with a severe short stack and he got looked up by Kyle Ray as both hands were already tabled.
Ray's A♥J♠6♥5♣ were up against the A♠J♣7♦3♠ of Woodward and the board ran out J♦9♥3♣2♦5♠ for Ray to river two pair and the superior low.
