Josh Arieh Rolls to the Top in Day 1 of Event #34: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha

Niveau 17 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Josh Arieh
Josh Arieh

Josh Arieh, who has three of his six World Series of Poker bracelets in Omaha events, as well as six other WSOP Omaha final tables, is at it again. From the moment he sat down in Event #34: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, he began accumulating chips until his stack dwarfed most if not all of those in the field, and it now stands at 1,196,000.

Arieh's Omaha skills are unquestionable, of course, but fortune seemed to favor him today, also. One particular hand that helped Arieh on his way to the top of the chip leaderboard was an improbable one. Josh Arieh had a short stack at risk holding J-J-7-8 with spades, and the opponent had almost the same hand, J-J-T-8 with hearts. Arieh looked at his opponent and said, "Good game, buddy," then flopped a flush draw, turned a spade, and it left his opponent drawing dead.

A field of 1,355 generated a $1,808,925 prize pool, with first place receiving $298,192 and the coveted WSOP bracelet. The 98 players who bagged chips on Day 1 are each guaranteed $3,002.

Day 2 stars at 10:00 a.m. local time. Ten levels will be played with 15-minute breaks after every two levels, and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 23 (approximately 4:30 p.m.). Play resumes at Level 18 with blinds of 5,000/10,000 and a 10,000 big blind ante.

Stay tuned to PokerNews, as this 2023 World Series of Poker tournament provides more four-card action on Day 2.

Po Short-Stacked on Bubble in Event #34 with Crumbs: Does History Repeat Itself?

Niveau 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Kenneth Po
Kenneth Po

In 2020, Kenneth Po stone bubbled this exact same event.

It looked like history may repeat itself:

Po was down to 2.5 big blinds, with only 10,000 in chips and 2 from the money. By the time hand-for-hand play started he was down to just 4,000 chips, which was one big blind and 5 hands before being forced all-in blind.

He managed to survive the bubble as there was only one hand during the hand-for-hand period. Shortly after the bubble burst, he found himself all-in with aces and couldn't hold as his opponent ended up making two pairs with Ax10x6x4x on the Q64K5 run out.

Po cashed in 200th place, for $2,402 and avoided the repeated bubble.

Negreanu Knows All The Angles

Niveau 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu had spiraled down a bit after dinner and when the action picked up on a board reading 83JJ, Negreanu had placed an all-in bet for his last 78,000. His opponent was thoughtful with his decision.

"Fine, I'll pay you off," the opponent said, calling.

"You have a jack, right?"

"Yah and you have eights?"

"Oh, you betcha, what do I need to dodge?"

Daniel Negreanu: 78810
Opponent: AKKJ

Negreanu had a full house but his opponent was drawing to a jack, king or an ace. Negreanu pulled his phone out to properly document the moment but put it back on the rail after the 2 fell.

The two players went on to discuss the obligation to call there, how having a pair in the hole kills some of the opponent's outs, and how Negreanu may have still jammed there with a hand like 9x10xJxQx. Another opponent at the table summed it up, "That's a cooler there, nothing you can do!".

Weisman Chips Up

Niveau 13 : Blinds 2,000/3,000, 3,000 ante
Dylan Weisman
Dylan Weisman

On a board reading 1047, Dylan Weisman was facing a bet of 8,000 from the player on the button, which Weisman raised to 22,000. After some thought, his opponent made the call.

The turn brought the 3 and Weisman now led for a pot sized bet of 63,000. His opponent went into the tank and counted their chips, revealing they only had 65,000 behind. He mucked his hand and as the dealer pushed the chips to Weisman, a player not in the hand chirped up, "Nice bluff!". Weisman's only response was shooting a sharp glance.

Negreanu Protects His Hand

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Daniel Negreanu raised to 6,500 and was called by both the cutoff and the big blind.

On the K108 flop, the big blind check-called a bet of 12,000 from Negreanu and the cutoff got out of the way.

The 4 landed on the turn and the big blind checked to Negreanu who announced 'pot'. The big blind had about 60,000 remaining and after a few moments decided to toss his cards into the muck.

"We talked about flopping a set, so I did," Claimed Negreanu, "I didn't have any hearts so I said get the f*** out."

Habeggers Can't Be Choosers

Niveau 11 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Fernando Habegger
Fernando Habegger

A short stacked Fernando Habegger squeezed preflop and was reraised by the player two seats to his left. Habegger obliged putting the last of his chips in, as did his opponent, who he covered.

Fernando Habegger: AJ78
Opponent: AAJ5

The situation didn't look great for Habegger, as his opponent had better hearts, a pair of aces, and he had one less jack to work with. When the dealer spun the wheel, it came in favor of of Habegger as it came down 7x8x5x. The turn peeled a 6x and when the river rolled a 9x, Habegger improved again to a straight.

Habegger will be one to watch in the field, as he recently came off of a runner up finish in the $5,000 NLH/PLO Mix early in the Series.

Robert Mizrachi was also seen on an outer table quietly stacking chips and is now amongst the chip leaders.

Daniel Negreanu had his camera out sweating a run out when PokerNews came on the scene. His opponent was Michael Setera and cards were on their backs.

Daniel Negreanu: AAQ8

The flop had come 597, giving Setera two pair, etcetera, and when the 8 came on the turn he improved to three pair. Negreanu was drawing rather thin when the 5 closed the door on him, giving Setera a boat.

Negreanu has already hopped back into the tournament on his second bullet for a fresh stack.
