Robert Schulz
Robert Schulz

Welcome back to PokerNews, the official media partner of the 2024 World Series of Poker and home of live updates from all bracelet events.

Today sees the start of Event #49: $3,000 Freezeout No-Limit Hold'em here at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.

This three-day event gets underway at 12 p.m. local time, with late registration open for nine levels. There will be 15-minute breaks every three levels, with a 60-minute dinner break at the end of Level 9 (~6:30 p.m.).

The starting stack is 40,000 chips, with the plan for Day 1 to play 15 40-minute levels or down to 15 percent of the field, whichever is later. Day 2 resumes at 12 p.m. Thursday for the surviving players and closes after ten more levels of play. Day 3 is when a winner will be crowned.

Last year’s winner Robert Schulz overcame a hard-fought final table which lasted almost seven hours. The German defeated Julien Sitbon in the finale to top the 1,598 entry field and collected his maiden bracelet and $675,275 from the $4,266,660 prize pool.

This is only the fourth installment of this event, with 2022 victor David Jackson famously beating Phil Hellmuth in a one-sided heads-up battle.

Niveau 5 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante
Alex Foxen (from a previous event)
Alex Foxen (from a previous event)

Action was three-way on a flop of 4A5. From the button, Petar Kalev bet 1,200, the big blind folded and Alex Foxen raised it up to 5,600 from the cutoff which Kalev called.

The turn was a third diamond with the 10 coming off. Kalev took quite a while to decide on his action, which he eventually decided to bet 4,000. Foxen jammed all in and Kalev snap-called.

Foxen was drawing dead as the river came on the 4. He packed up his things and left as his stay in this event turned out to be a very short one.

A player under the gun raised to 4,200, and action folded to the big blind Ethan Yau. He elected to three-bet to 14,000, which the under the gun player called.

Both players checked to the turn on the 68Q flop.

The turn was the Q when Yau bet out 19,500 and was called by his opponent.

On the river was the Q and Yau put out a stack of 5,000 chips to put the under the gun player all in for 44,200. After sitting in the tank he eventually flicked in the call.

Yau turned over 9x9x for a full house, queens full of nines. His opponent showed 7x7x for a smaller full house and was eliminated from the tournament.

Day 1 of Event #49 $3,000 Freezeout No-Limit Hold’em attracted a whopping 1,252 entries at the World Series of Poker (WSOP).

A total prize pool of $3,342,840 was generated by 1,252 entrants. The remaining 187 players are officially in the money. Players have locked up $6,024, but they are hoping for more, especially the top prize of $523,195.

Action concluded in Level 17 with blinds of 5,000/10,000 and 12 minutes remaining on the clock. Sami Bechahed bagged one of the top stacks, accumulating 927,000 over the course of the day. Only Ivan Ruban (1,476,000), David Stamm (1,165,000), and John Kenner (1,089,000) finished Day 1 with more chips than Bechahed.
