Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.
In the eighth episode, Connor speaks with legendary UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer in an exclusive in-depth interview after Buffer's deep run in the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) $50,000 High Roller. Buffer, a longtime poker player, finished in eighth place for a career-best $212,423 after kicking off Day 3 with his trademark "it's time" introduction.
Buffer talked about finding his long-lost half-brother, Michael Buffer, and becoming his manager, the early days of the UFC, the similarities between poker and martial arts, his relationships with Joe Rogan and Dana White, playing poker with Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio and the time he injured himself in a poker tournament before announcing the biggest UFC fight in history.
The button opened the action with a raise to 12,000. Christoph Vogelsang moved all in from the small blind for 69,500 before the big blind re-raised all in for 205,000. The button mucked and players headed to a runout with Vogelsang at risk.
Christoph Vogelsang: A♦Q♠
Big Blind: K♣K♥
The board came down 4♣A♣J♥Q♦5♦ and Vogelsang's top-two pair was good enough for a full double up.
On a board of Q♣3♠Q♥4♥2♥ with a bit more than 100,000 in the pot, Aleksejs Ponakovs in middle position moved all-in for roughly 90,000. Aleksandr Shevliakov on the button went deep into the tank, and eventually made the call for his last 50,000.
Aleksandr Shevliakov: A♠10♥
Aleksejs Ponakovs: K♠Q♠
Shevliakov called with ace-high but ran into Ponakovs flopped trips and he was eliminated.
Barry Hutter was in the big blind when Kristen Foxen raised to 10,000 from the cutoff. Action folded to Hutton who made the call and they were off to a flop of 5♥4♦9♦. Hutter checked and Foxen bet 7,000, which Hutter called.
The 6♦ turn checked around to the K♥ river, at which point Hutter led out for 32,000 and Foxen folded.
