Faraz Jaka's Main Event Tips! #2: Identify the Weak Players

Jaka Coaching

To mark the WSOP Main Event, Faraz Jaka has given us some top tips for those playing in the most prestigious event in poker. You can always find more help and advice, as well as free poker resources and training videos on Jaka Coaching.

Top Tip #2: Mindset

"Another bit of advice for the WSOP Main Event is on mindset. People get really excited during the Main Event. There are camera, media coverage and your friends are texting you — there's just so much excitement!

"It's hard not to get sucked into that. So when you have a big stack you're getting all hyped up and then you get a bad beat and lose two thirds your stack you feel like crap."

Find out more about Jaka Coaching

Staying grounded mentally and not letting your mindset wander away from the present is super important, says Jaka.

"You really have to try not to get too excited and stay even keel. I always remind myself, that in every tournament I have ever won, at some point I was a short stack with ten big blinds. So when I get short, I'm like, 'Alright, this is part of the journey to win a tournament.'"

Top Tip #1: Identify Weaker Players

"My first tip is to identify the weakest players at your table," Jaka told PokerNews. "And while this may be important in all tournaments, in the Main Event it's extra important because you just get so many recreational players, and maybe this is the one big tournament they play a year.

"So be sure to identify who those players are. You want to raise their big blinds a little bit wider, you want to three-bet and isolate them. And really try to get into pots versus them."

Find out more about Jaka Coaching

Jaka says that these weaker players tend to belong in two separate camps:

"There's going to be ones that are scared money that you could kind of run over, but then there's gonna be others that are gamblers.

"They're the ones where you actually have to kind of hold on and hit something, so be a little bit aware of who they are. They're definitely the ones you want to get into a pot heads-up with.

Zhou Catches Galfond Bluffing

Niveau 8 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Phil Galfond and Hao Zhou were heads-up on a flop of 54Q with several thousand already in the middle.

Zhou check-called a 4,500 bet from Galfond and then check-called a 21,000 bet from Galfond on the 9 turn.

The K completed the board and Zhou checked a final time. Galfond cut out a bet of 70,000 and placed it into the middle — sending Zhou deep into the tank.

Zhou eventually put in a call and Galfond tabled 22. Zhou let out a sigh of relief and tabled AA for a pair of aces to take down the large pot.
