2024 World Series of Poker
At the 2023 World Series of Poker, poker player Cody Daniels inspired the poker community with his strength and determination when taking on Poker's World Championship while battling a terminal illness.
This summer, the Lake Havasu City native returned to the WSOP, first playing Event #70: $400 Colossus before hopping into the record-breaking 2024 WSOP Main Event. Daniels managed to navigate the bubble, which burst earlier in the afternoon, and currently sits with a stack of 300,000 (25 big blinds) at the halfway point of Day 4.
In the midst of his pursuit of the WSOP Main Event bracelet and the $10 million first-place prize, PokerNews caught up with the 29-year-old. Daniels shared his experiences, emotions, and the extraordinary support he's received throughout his journey.
Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.
In the 11th episode, Connor speaks with Dan "Jungleman" Cates about accountability in poker, his notorious heads-up challenge with Tom Dwan, Game of Gold, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, mindfulness in poker and his new podcast Winning the Game of Life.
Cates also talked about his iconic Poker Players Championship outfits and a six-figure downswing he experienced at Bellagio during the summer.
This interview was filmed at the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) inside Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.
After what has been a long and eventful Day 4 of the 2024 Main Event already, the players are on their 75-minute dinner respite where they can recharge and prepare for the final four hours of play. Play will resume at ~ 9:07 p.m.
A look back at what occurred in a wild Level 18:
A player in early position moved all in for around 350,000 and Hamid Toghyan put him at risk on the button.
All-In Player: A♠K♣
Hamid Toghyan: A♦A♣
"Aces again?" a tablemate said as the A♥J♣7♣ flop gave Toghyan top set. The rest of the board ran out 2♠2♣ and Toghyan finished with a full house to send his opponent to the rail.
"It's unreal the hands I'm getting. It's literally aces, kings every hand. It's not just about getting aces, it's about getting a cooler hand to go up against," Toghyan said after the hand.

Ren Lin raised to 25,000 and the big blind defended. On a flop of K♥9♠5♣, the big blind checked and subsequently called a bet worth 15,000 by Lin. The duo headed to the Q♦ turn on which the same check-call repeated for another 50,000 before the 10♥ river slowed down both players and Lin checked behind.
The big blind revealed the K♠7♦ for top pair but Lin had that crushed with the K♦K♣, joking about the bad runout.

Ian O'Hara opened from middle position to 25,000 and got called by the cutoff, small blind, and big blind.
The action was checked to the river on the A♦5♦J♦7♦9♥ board where it checked to O'Hara, who bet 55,000. The cutoff folded, the small blind called, and the big blind folded.
O'Hara tabled A♣9♦ for a flush, and the small blind mucked.

Javier Perez Estevez was on the button and got his last 560,000 in the middle against Florian Ribouchon in the cutoff.
Javier Perez Estevez: A♥K♠
Florian Ribouchon: K♣K♥
Perez Estevez needed to find an ace to win the pot but found none through the turn on a board of 10♣6♣Q♣4♠. The A♣ came on the river, but the same card also gave Ribouchon a flush and the bustout.
