One Table Remains, Gold on the Line, The Final Battle Commences

Final Table Chip Leader Bernard Lee
Final Table Chip Leader Bernard Lee

At 2 p.m. local time this afternoon inside the Brasilia room at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, the final six players in Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw will return to battle for a coveted WSOP gold bracelet. Though they have all locked up $12,868, only one will walk away with the top prize of $89,151.

In seat one is the only non-American left in the field. The UK’s Stuart Rutter comes in as the second shortest stack, mostly staying quiet on Day 2. Rutter made a splash late on Day 2 when he eliminated fellow countryman Benny Glaser on the second-to-last hand of the night. Rutter has 29 career WSOP cashes totaling $601,893. Rutter’s largest cash came back in 2010 when he finished third in the $5,000 Shootout for $179,617.

Coming in as the overwhelming chip leader, Bernard Lee occupies the two seat. Lee doesn’t need much of an introduction. Few have done as much on both sides of the poker community as the Boston native has. Lee has hosted “The Bernard Lee Poker Show” for 10 years and has been writing columns, articles, and pieces for numerous outlets including ESPN and The Boston Herald. Lee has amassed more than $1,000,000 at the world series including 45 cashes, with his best coming in the 2005 WSOP Main Event where Lee finished in 13th place earning $400,000.

Jared Bleznick is another player who has found great success at the WSOP. Resuming play with the shortest stack, Bleznick will have to gather all his wits and experience from his 15 WSOP cashes in order to triumph today. Bleznick has $1,224,498 in career WSOP earnings including a 16th-place score of $338,288 in last year’s Main Event and a runner-up finish in the 2013 $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Championship for $526,625.

Taking up the four seat and coming in fourth in chips is Tim Mcguigan. This will be Mcguigan’s first-ever WSOP cash and by far the largest cash of his career. As a rather unknown, Mcguigan wasn’t pushed around during play through the first two days. Mcguigan was even the chip leader early on Day 2.

Arguably the most notable player on the final table, Frank Kassela comes in third in chips. Kassela is the proud owner of two WSOP bracelets and over $2,000,000 in career world series earnings. Both of his bracelets came in 2010. His first was the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Championship and then two weeks later Kassela shipped the $2,500 Razz event. Kassela went on to win the WSOP Player of the Year and has picked up a total of 32 cashes.

The final seat at the table belongs to Matt Waxman. Amazingly, Waxman started Day 2 with just five big blinds and came in sitting dead last. Waxman now sits in the second position. The American pro is well-seasoned when it comes to the World Series and holds a gold bracelet of his own. Waxman captured the title in 2013 when he won a $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event for $305,952. In total, Waxman boasts 45 WSOP cashes amassing $1,427,668 in the process.

Stick with PokerNews for all the action from Event #13's final day until one of these gentlemen hoists a shiny, new WSOP gold bracelet.

Bernard Lee has 45 WSOP cashes and has found success in many forms of poker. Today, he is the final table chip leader for Event #13: $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw.

Earlier in 2011 he finished fourth in this same event and took home $28,422. Today he is guaranteed at least $12,868.

Stuart Rutter

Stuart Rutter was the first person eliminated on Day 3 of Event #13.

Rutter was in the big blind when Frank Kassela opened on the button to 25,000. Rutter called and both players drew one.

Rutter took a moment to calculate his next move and then bet 50,000. Kassela asked to see Rutter's remaining stack and then went all in, putting Rutter at risk. Rutter had 169,000 behind.

Rutter took about two minutes before announcing his intention.

"I call," he said deliberately.

Kassela flipped over his hand and showed an {8-}{7-}{5-}{3-}{2-}. Rutter mucked his hand and headed to the rail. Rutter said he had {9-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-} and was eliminated in sixth place.

Jared Bleznick open-jammed for less than 10 big blinds and table chip leader Frank Kassela made the call, putting Bleznick at risk.

Bleznick stood pat and tabled a jack-ten with {j-}{10-}{9-}{4-}{2-}. Kassela drew one, revealing {8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}. The dealer slid over the final card and Kassela tossed it in face up. The card was a {9-}, giving Kassela the best hand with a nine-eight and Bleznick was eliminated in fifth place, taking home $17,890.

Matt Waxman

Matt Waxman was eliminated in fourth place by Tim McGuigan after the two went all in pre-draw.

McGuigan opened on the button to 30,000, and Waxman shoved all in for a total of 153,500. McGuigan took about two minutes and eventually called.

Each player drew one and laid their four-card hands on the table.

Waxman: {7-}{4-}{3-}{2-}
McGuigan: {9-}{6-}{5-}{2-}

The two players received their draw, and Waxman asked McGuigan if he could flip a nine real quick for a pair to end the drama.

Waxman showed first and was not too impressed with his draw. He pulled a jack for {j-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{3-}{2-}.

McGuigan peeled a ten for {10-}{9-}{6-}{5-}{2-}, and after a brief celebration, apologized to Waxman. Waxman finished in fourth place for $25,451.

Timothy Mcguigan
Timothy Mcguigan

Tim McGuigan is making the most of his first WSOP tournament cash. He is already guaranteed $37,032, which is roughly $35,000 more than his current recorded live tournament earnings so far.

The 53-year-old is now the slight chip leader over Bernard Lee and Frank Kassela.

Lee and McGuigan were heads-up after McGuigan opened to 25,000 on the button and Lee defended the big blind. Each player drew one, and Lee led for 56,000. McGuigan raised but had less than a min-raise, so he had to make it 112,000. Lee called before all of McGuigan's bet was even in the pot.

McGuigan showed a seven — {7-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and won the pot. Lee said he had an eight.

Tim McGuigan has been eliminated from Event #13 in third place and will take home $37,032.

McGuigan got the last of his chips in drawing pretty live against a pat hand from Bernard Lee.

Lee opened to 56,000, and McGuigan went all in for 133,000. Lee called, and after McGuigan drew one, Lee stood pat with {q-}{j-}{10-}{4-}{2-}.

McGuigan showed {9-}{8-}{6-}{5-} and drew a six to pair. He was eliminated in third place.

Lee is now heads-up for his first WSOP bracelet against two-time bracelet winner Frank Kassela. Lee currently has a little more than two-thirds of the chips in play.

Frank Kassela and Bernard Lee both drew two, and that led to Kassela winning the biggest pot of the heads-up portion of the tournament.

Kassela opened to 58,000, and Lee called. Lee drew two, and Kassela also drew two. Lee bet 91,000, and Kassela raised to 225,000. Lee snap-called.

"Call?" questioned Kassela. "I have a wheel." He showed {7-}{5-}{4-}{3-}{2-}, and Lee mucked.

"You won't believe how good I was there," Lee said. He later shared that he made an eight-six.

Frank Kassela Overtakes Bernard Lee

Frank Kassela is now the chip leader heads-up in Event #13.

"Does that give us the chip lead?" asked Shaun Deeb after Kassela won a hand.

Deeb came to cheer and coach Kassela once the tournament went heads-up.

Kassela won a couple hands in a row to finally overtake Lee.

First, he opened to 75,000, which has been his standard open for this level. Lee called. Both players drew one, and both checked. Kassela won with a {j-}{9-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{3-} against a queen.

A couple hands later, Kassela opened 75,000 again, and Lee called. They both drew one again, and Lee checked. Kassela bet 150,000, and Lee folded.

Bernard Lee

Bernard Lee, who was the start-of-day and long-standing chip leader, three-bet all in over an open to 100,000 from Frank Kassela.

Kassela got an exact count and decided to call. Lee flicked one card into the center of the table, indicating a one-card draw, and Kassela stood pat.

At that point, Kassela laid out the hand Lee would need to beat in order to stay in the tournament: {j-}{10-}{7-}{5-}{4-}.

Lee was drawing pretty live when he showed {9-}{4-}{3-}{2-} with one card to come. He reached for it, turned over the {9-Spades}, and immediately laid his head on the rail as Kassela jumped up to embrace the members of his rail who had gathered for a chance to see him win his third bracelet.

This marks the third top-ten finish for Lee in a 2-7 event and likely the most heartbreaking result. He collected $55,086 as a consolation prize.
