Event #19: THE GIANT - $365 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1d of THE GIANT Starts at 7 p.m.

Welcome to Day 1d, the penultimate flight of THE GIANT at the WSOP 2017 hosted at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. With a $365 buy-in, this is the most affordable live no-limit hold’em event ever offered for a WSOP gold bracelet.

This is the fourth of five Friday night flights with the final flight on July 7.

This is a brand new event for 2017 and, when the schedule was announced, Ty Stewart, WSOP Executive Director, said:

“This 2017 schedule reflects our continuing goal to broaden poker’s appeal and encourage first timers and recreational players to come experience the WSOP for themselves, With the new $365 buy-in Giant anchoring Friday nights, alongside a tent pole event awarding millions every weekend, we believe we have the offering to be well worth the trip. Plus, for the serious and high-stakes player, we remain committed to having the most diverse schedule of events of any tournament in the world. Whatever your game or bankroll, let the bracelet chase begin.”

Cards are in the air at 7 p.m. with play scheduled to last 18 20-minute levels or down to 10 players, whichever comes first. Late registration is open for eight levels which will be approximately 10 p.m. Play is expected to end at around 2 a.m.

Players will play their Day 1 on any of the five starting flights they choose, and they will play into the money on Day 1 (just like Colossus did in 2016). Anyone surviving their Day 1 will have their chips put into play on Day 2 (if they choose not to forfeit them to attempt another flight) on July 8, with the final table taking place July 9.

This event features unlimited reentry during the open registration period. People can end up cashing in multiple flights, however only one chip stack can be carried forward to Day 2 play. The Giant will still pay 15% of the field, based on the individual flight number of entries, and everyone on Day 1 who cashes can receive their prize money that day. The remaining prize money from each flight gets carried over to Day 2, along with the other flights’ remaining prize money, to combine and create the remaining prize pool the Day 2 players will vie for.

Cards In the Air!

Niveau 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

All stacks are out on the 10-handed tables except the 5 and 10 seats, and the room is filling up fast.

The shuffle up and deal has been given and play is under way.

There are currently 734 entries showing on the board and, although the blinds go up every 20 minutes, players have a generous 20,000 starting stack, which equates to 400 big blinds.

Brett Shaffer Claims a Scalp

Niveau 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

There was an open to 125 for an opponent who had already lost a few early pots when Brett Shaffer bumped it up to 1,150 and his opponent called.

The flop was {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-} and the short-stack player committed the rest of his 4,000 stack with Shaffer putting him at risk.

Shaffer: {q-}{q-}
Opponent {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

The board bricked out and Shaffer added a decent pot while his opponent was felted.

The GIANT offers unlimited rebuys until the start of Level 9, though, so he may well try again.

900 Entries & Spillover Rooms

Niveau 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

Over 175 entries have been added in the last 20 minutes. This is going to be a busy one.

Miranda is the main tournament room which is pretty much full now with spillover into Pavilion Green sections and Amazon Orange.

Round Two For Audley Harrison

Niveau 2 : 50/100, 0 ante

Audley Harrison, the 2,000 Olympic gold medallist in the super-heavyweight boxing division, is at the tables again. Harrison played Day 1a and, although he got off to a storming start, he couldn’t beat the count and failed to bag up chips.

He attended a wedding the next day and said that would be his last poker tournament on this trip to Vegas. Harrison though was playing at Planet Hollywood last night and is off to a decent start in The Giant Day 1d

The board on the river read {6-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and a player bet 800.

“I think you might have me out-kicked,” Harrison said before he called.

His opponent showed {10-Spades}{7-Spades} which did not out kick or beat the {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds} top pair of Harrison.
