Player Interview: Robin Hegele

Niveau 26 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Robin Hegele
Robin Hegele

Robin Hegele climbed quickly to the top of the chip counts early on Day 5 and then fell back to the middle of the pack almost as quickly. It was a pleasant surprise to see his name re-enter the top ten after the dinner break.

Hegele, also listed as Robin William at the WSOP and in Hendon Mob, has a few tournament results to boast about, including a deep run in last year's Main Event and a cash in this year's $ 888 No Limit Hold'em - Crazy Eights.

We don't know much about this German player, but "German" should tell you enough to watch your chips when he sits down at your table. We caught up with Hegele as players went on break to see what he could tell us about his day and the prospect of making Day 6.

Hegele: I was super lucky to hold the aces against ace-king in the first level today for a huge pot. Since then, nothing really super extraordinary happened. I've won some small pots and lost some.

PokerNews: You won a large pot just after dinner when your pocket sixes held up against ace-king that put you back up on top. How is your table treating you now that you have a huge stack again?

Hegele: I think my table has to respect my stack because I'm the only one who covers everyone. That doesn't mean they make my life easy by letting me roll over the table. They are fighting hard!

PN: What's your strategy going into Day 6?

Hegele: Regarding my strategy, I just want to play good poker. If I make Day 6, it won't be completely in my hands. When the cards and the pots are coming my way, and if I get a little bit lucky, we're going see each other on Day 6 for sure.

PN: How much poker do you play?

Hegele: I played my first WSOP last year and made Day 5 in the Main Event. Since then, I played a couple of live tournaments all around the globe. I recently moved to Vienna to play online poker more regularly. I love playing the game.

Carrel's Kings Run Into Greenblatt's Aces

Charlie Carrel

Frank Crivello opened to 175,000 from middle position, and Charlie Carrel three-bet to 425,000 from the cutoff. Alexander Greenblatt was in the big blind and four-bet to 900,000. Crivello got out of the way, and Carrel moved all in for his remaining 1,770,000. Greenblatt instantly called, and the cards were tabled.

Greenblatt: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}
Carrel: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

Carrel found himself in a poker player's nightmare and needing to hit one of two outs in the deck. The flop came {q-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{7-Hearts}, and Greenblatt was still out in front with the best two pair. The turn was the {8-Hearts}, and the river was the {3-Clubs}, providing no help to Carrel.

Carrel wished everyone at the table good luck and stepped aside for an interview before exiting the Brasilia Room for the last time this summer.

Sammartino Doubles Again, This Time Through Oliveira

Dario Sammartino

Pedro Oliveira opened with a raise to 150,000 from early position. Action folded around to Dario Sammartino, who was in late position, and he moved all in for 935,000. Oliveira thought for about a minute and a half before calling.

Sammartino: {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Oliveira: {A-Spades}{J-Spades}

The board ran out {6-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}, giving no sign of a sweat to Sammartino, and that allowed him to double up for the second time this level, putting him just over two million chips.

Daniel Ott Flops Top Set, Eliminates Gordon Campbell

Gordon Campbell opened to 125,000 in middle position, and Daniel Ott defended his big blind.

The flop came {9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, and Ott checked. Campbell continued for 225,000, and Ott check-raised to 450,000. Campbell then moved all in for 2,075,000, and Ott quickly called.

Ott had {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} for top set, and Campbell was in bad shape with {A-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

The {J-Clubs} turn and the {2-Clubs} river were insignificant, and Campbell was eliminated from the Main Event.

The pot put Ott up around eight million chips.

Horton Gets a Bluff Through on Comel

Josh Horton
Josh Horton

On a turn of {7-Spades} with a flop already of {A-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts}, Joshua Horton was first to act. He put out a bet of 550,000 and Sebastien Comel called after a couple minutes of thought.

On the {K-Spades} river, Horton led again, this time he bet 925,000. Comel thought for about two minutes, then the clock was called.

As the floor man came over and asked whether or not the player had enough time, Comel tossed his cards forward into the muck.

"Whew!" Horton said as he turned his {J-Hearts}{8-Hearts} face up for jack high with a missed flush draw. "You had me sweating!"

Comel shook his head and tapped the table, as his chips were sent over to Horton who closed in on the 10-million-chip mark.

Alex Massman Eliminated by Travis Lutes

Alex Massman moved all in for 1,185,000 from under the gun, and it folded to Travis Lutes in the big blind. Lutes looked down at his cards and quickly put forward a small stack of chips to call.

Massman: {9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}
Lutes: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}

They were off to the races, and the flop came {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. Massman's nines were still in the lead, and he improved to a set on the {9-Hearts} turn. That card also gave Lutes outs for a flush, or he could make a straight with a jack.

The {J-Clubs} fell on the river, giving Lutes the straight and crushing Massman's Main Event hopes. Massman headed to the payout desk to collect his consolation prize after his deep run in the tournament.

Carrel Predicts the Future, Looks Silly

On the {10-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop, small blind Iverson Snuffer bet 125,000, and Charlie Carrel, seated under the gun, called. Both players checked the {10-Spades} on the turn. The river came the {Q-Diamonds}, and Snuffer checked again. Carrel asked to see how much Snuffer had behind and bet 400,000 as soon as he found out it was just under that.

Snuffer leaned forward and spend a little time in the tank.

"You want me to talk?" Carrel asked.

As Snuffer indicated that was okay, Carrel continued, "I'll tell you what's gonna happen. What's gonna happen is, you gonna call with a seven, ace-seven, and I'm gonna look silly."

"Well, you talked me into it," Snuffer said, and he called after about another minute in the tank.

Carrel showed {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}, and Snuffer happily showed {A-Diamonds}{7-Spades}.

Both Carrel and Snuffer laughed as Snuffer doubled.

The board ran out {a-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts}, and Li was unable to best the queens of Pantling. Unfortunately for Li, she was eliminated near the end of Day 5, but she can hold her head high as the last woman standing in the 2017 WSOP Main Event.

When Paul Senat bet 110,000 on the turn of a {5-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{4-Spades}{j-Spades} board, Charlie Carrel raised to 420,000. Senat called, and the {k-Spades} completed the board on the river. Senat checked, and Carrel slid out a bet worth 1,050,000. Senat went into the tank, removing his sunglasses, and stared at Carrel. Carrel stared back, and eventually Senat cut out a call and pushed it forward.
